Garris was really good from the jump too. But, yeah, Douglas was the best.
Agreed, and at least based on pedigree Douglas isn't surprising. In HS. Varsity all 4 years (big bench contributor as a freshman), 3 years a starter, team finished 2/1/3 in state those 3 years winning 64 games in a row, 2x All State/All American, Mr. Basketball and a Parade AA as a senior (equivalent of McD AA now. He was as much a no-doubt recruit as the Illini have ever landed.

You may remember a guy named Dee Brown

Douglas was before my day, but he was impressive: 9.4 ppg, 5.9 apg, 2.7 topg, 2.7 rpg, 46% FG, 25% 3pt
Dee: 12 ppg, 5 apg, 1.9 topg, 3.7 rpg, 43% FG, 33% 3pt
Douglas was a better defender than Dee. He was 2x B10 defensive player if the year. The game they lost at Rupp in the Elite 8 vs UK still is annoying.

People didn’t think Sencire would get any time last year and seem to be of the same opinion this year. Not one of those believers. Great athletic who puts in the work. My memory from last year is he did not try to dribble past defenders but passed the ball down court. TJ turned the ball over trying to dribble past defenders. Not willing to hang him out to dry with 20 total free throws. Obviously made frosh errors in trying to dunk when contested. A mistake he won’t make this year. Don’t think he is a starter but will make a contribution.
Also believe people are underselling Hansberry. He is Ty with more size who can shoot. There is a reason he was pursued so hard and it wasn’t to hold the bench to the floor.
I was one of those who didn’t expect too many minutes for Harris last year. He has his limitations, but was a key contributor. I think if he’s spending much time on the court as a PG this year though, things likely aren’t going well for team. I think with this team and the newcomers we have, a duplicate of the minutes he got last year (about 14.5 mpg I believe) would be ideal.

Definitely agree on Hansberry. Very interested in seeing how he fits into the puzzle and seeing him play.

He and Efrem were McDonald's All Americans in 1982. Also, Derek Harper in 1980. Eddie Johnson was a year too early, iirc?

Guess we will see how it plays out but do not see 14 mpg for him unless Harmon is a no go and DGL is not ready at all and we do not get another PG.
Who knows. A lot up in the air.

DMac was pretty dang good right from the start also. I remember him putting up like 30 points against Indiana his freshman year.
Problem with DMac was BAM and him were not on the same page and shows what happens when the head coach and PG are on different pages. Those were the beginning of the dark days
