there's already one free transfer, so I see this as a no op
Yes but look at Skyy. He can transfer to Louisville with no penalty because of the current 1 transfer rule. But if this rule says you get a free transfer if you leave in the first semester, I'm assuming that means he gets to transfer to Louisville freely, but he hasn't even used his one time free transfer yet. So presumably that means, if he doesn't like it at Louisville he can transfer again free of charge at the end of the year. Then he will get to transfer again when he graduates. Sounds like he could hop from school to school with no penalty if he only stays a semester.

Sure it is going to be rare that someone hops from school to school after a semester, but i'm sure it will happen.

if that's how this is gonna work, then, yeah, that new rule sucks

I think high major coaching jobs are going to be interesting to watch in the next decade.

I almost wonder if guys will be more hesitant to jump up ranks. Seems like not only has pressure increased, but the job demands so much more.

I am one of those Alabama people and the ones that didn't like him are clueless. He took several games over during last years run. He also could play out of control but you took the bad with the good. If he wanted to come to the Illini, I would welcome him with open arms.
Moved to Alabama from central Illinois 4 years ago. I watched most of the Alabama games too, would have to agree with the above post !!

Yep … Not a fan either …

Feedback from coaches so far: “making things more difficult … Shows how little people care about teaching kids the meaning of commitment.”
Those same coaches who are looking for rock stars in the portal to play above the committed kids who stayed? The same coaches who are always looking for a higher paying job? Who have their dream job until the even dreamier job comes? They seem hypocritical IMHO.

I wonder if guys are going to jump ship, period. Jay Wright hit the nail on the head here. He got out before the BS started. This isn't coaching and developing anymore. That's what many of these guys got into the profession. Now, it's babysitting. These coaches are managing donors, dealing with kids that can do, pretty much, whatever they want, wherever they want....and dealing with fans who seem to think that nothing has changed when these guys have to actually coach.

If you look at the Final Four last year, this is where we're headed. The blue bloods are being effected, probably more than anyone else, because at the end of the day, it's money and not the jersey that rules the day. It's the team that doesn't lose guys to the portal, lose guys for money and lose guys to the NBA or G League.

How many of those coaches so worried about commitment have changed jobs for more money and/or a better opportunity?

Oh I don’t disagree … For me though, it’s about education … I mean with all this transferring you’ve got kids like Tre Mitchell who have changed schools 4 years in a row … How many of those kinds of kids are graduating ? Very few …

Just stating what’s being said … Don’t shoot the messenger … 😂

After their first semester of coaching at a school? Zero?

Also agree with this take …

You just don’t see coaches quitting halfway through the year … After the season is over and they leave ? Oh well … Players can do that now too and if you want to transfer if your coach leaves then I’m all for it …

But the enabling quitting mid semester AKA Skyy ? I really struggle with what message that sends to our youth if the answer to anything hard in life is just to quit … But hey that’s just this old guys 2 cents …

Lol I was just explaining to a young person the other day that the only way to listen to Inagodda davita was to listen to it after 10PM on WLS and normally only on Friday or Saturday evening. Think I still have that album in my stack
memories abound.....BTW , this album is after the band reorganized with 2 new guitar players..............

The band had been booked to play at Woodstock in August 1969 but got stuck at New York City's LaGuardia Airport. They explained their situation to the concert promoters and asked for patience. Their manager, however, sent a telegram demanding that Iron Butterfly be flown in by helicopter, whereupon they would "immediately" take the stage. After their set, they would be paid and flown back to the airport. According to drummer Bushy, "We went down to the Port Authority three times and waited for the helicopter, but it never showed up".[10] Woodstock Production Coordinator John Morris claims he sent the manager a telegram reading: "For reasons I can't go into / Until you are here / Clarifying your situation / Knowing you are having problems / You will have to find / Other transportation / Unless you plan not to come." The acrostic formed by the first letter of each line in the telegram made it clear that the band was not welcome.[11]

Erik Brann left the band after a final show in San Diego on December 15, 1969. Brann was frustrated with the band's unwillingness to move towards a harder rock sound. He was replaced in the line-up by two new musicians: guitarist/vocalist Mike Pinera (whose Blues Image had opened for Iron Butterfly's Vida tour) and guitarist Larry Reinhardt (from the Allman Brothers Band forerunner Second Coming). Both Pinera and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt had been rehearsing secretly with the band since September 1969 after Brann had voiced his objections to continuing. In August 1970 Iron Butterfly released its fourth studio album Metamorphosis. The album managed to get into the Billboard top 20.

You also really don't see coaches moving as often as people think. Sure maybe as you are climbing up through the low and mid-majors, but at the P6 level people make it sound like it's a revolving door, it is not.

How many coaches jump each year out of 352 D1? 15? 20? Approximately 30% of all players jumped in the portal before this rule goes into effect. NCAA just keeps digging the hole deeper, making a messy situation unsustainable.

So, what is the play now? Are we looking for a 24 we've offered to reclassify?

Agree with much of above. It's like AAU teams with players switching clubs constantly.

Some coaches do somehow pull a group together and succeed at times, but many can't and there is often constant drama and bitching by parents and players.
Throw in the NIL element and it is chaos.

The level of play is not as good anymore either. A lot of athletes and highlight moments but a lot of bad basketball and bizarre lack of fundamentals and team play.

And underlying it all most of these kids think they can make the NBA which is just not a reality.

Nice history.
Well deserved response from the PC.

It’s going to happen a lot more than you think …
Since it is harder to depend on a freshman staying, does it make more sense to recruit transfers through the portal after they have used their free transfer? this would, theoretically allow them to be evaluated better with one year of college experience and lock them in for longer term as they would have to sit out a year if they wanted to transfer again..inquiring minds want to know...

AFAIC, absolutely. Sitting out a year is a huge deterrent to transferring.
