I’d watch out for KU or UK as well. Self and Cal won't be there forever. Gates has all the tools. And could be first AA coach at KU.

Nate Oats will take of those … He’s #1 for both of them and UNC …

Sean Miller would also be on the short list for UNC, Kansas and Kentucky …

Mick Cronin, Jerome Tang a couple of other names …

If UK comes open and it’s not Scott Drew … I’d be very surprised …

I know rankings aren't everything but not one other major D1 program is interested? Is this where the program is...hoping to find diamonds in the rough?
Let's hope he outplays his ranking, as the coaching staff appears to think he's much better than the national services say. Sure wish Illinois had taken another 3 star point guard who had no high major offers - Fred Van Vleet - would have been a program changing recruit from Rockford. Had toughness, smarts, and outperformed his physical size even in high school.

This.

If there were ratings way back when, Gill would've been a 3 star. I don't recollect Lilliard being a highly coveted recruit. Neither was Curry. Think we should let this one play out.

Yeah, I don’t personally really see it with Jase, but rankings aren’t everything and I’ll trust the staff’s evaluations. I also didn’t see it with Podz, so what do I know!

Yeah...and Devin Langford, Maverick Morgan and Jaylon Tate were 3 star recruits, too. I'm not so much worried about the ranking as I am that no other major program is interested. Guess we'll just hope BU is a better talent-evaluator than everybody else.

Understandably, the recruiting services are trying to project how someone will develop in the next few years. Often this means they fall in love with "measurables" like height and jumping ability. There are lots of great basketball players who don't have Michael Jordan's physical gifts. Give me someone with heart, skill and who plays great basketball, not just a bunch of athletic freaks.

Evidently, a P5 program (West coast) is making a late push.

Not much defense or passing going on in AAU ball tournaments. Now you have the sports academy all star teams.

Very different from a 5 star recruit from Simeon or Dematha.

Not sure these internet evaluators who give out stars are very reliable.

I think it still comes down to coach getting eyes on recruits and deciding if they have talent, basketball skills, physical characteristics, and drive to help your program. Skyy, Jayden and Sencire are about as different college guards as you can get

Skyy - was highest rated, seemed to lack athleticism,
Jayden - very nice offensive player, good athleticsm struggled some on defense
Sencire - crazy good defensive player, out of control sometimes on offense, has to develop outside shot/free throw

Sencire reminds a little of freshman Kendall Gill. Hope he stays 4 years and we can see him develop along same path!

Waiting to see how well he does with that baseline bank shot.

The athletic freaks have ended our last 2 tournaments, we need significantly more.

Are we talking about the Rick Barnes who has been top 5 in KenPom defensive efficiency each of the last three years (#1 last year)?

I'm not the biggest Rick Barnes fan out there, but that doesn't happen without some coaching...
Rick Barnes has regularly underperformed in NCAAT. A couple years back saw something that said he was the worst performing Coach in NCAA recent history - barely leading Coach Lou.

It was calculated by seed and performance of seed. Wish I could relocate it. Not what I found previously but fairly close. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/jim-boeheim-is-the-new-king-of-march-madness/

Barnes ranked 558 (tied with Dixon & Dunphy)
slight ahead of Stewart and Henson.

I watched a highlight video, so I'm pretty well informed on this recruit now /s

That said, seemed like he has a good stroke, and can play physical. Nothing wowed me although he did make some nifty moves. Makes me wish I could see the staff's notes.

I always tell my patients that they should trust people who "do something for a living" to most often know what they are talking about, rather than listen to people who only have peripheral knowledge of a subject. Our coaches have been doing this evaluation thing for a while. They know what they are looking for in a player. If they are high on a guy, I am more inclined to trust them rather than other people's opinions. Will they take a flyer on a guy with potential that remains unproven sometimes? Yes. Sometimes, it doesn't pan out, but sometimes it does. My point - the staff obviously sees something that they really like with Jase. That's good enough for me!

Just judging by the recruiting going-ons of the last couple years, I have to believe the general approach right now is to spend the bulk of our NIL dollars on promising and/or already-proven transfers and returning contributors (ex: Hawkins), then fill out the roster with promising young players who don't immediately demand a ton of your resources in return. But, I've still been waiting for one of our more plugged in members to give a rundown of how our NIL money is spent. I've seen it insinuated that we are big players, but then also remembered how we didn't have enough money for Zyon Pullin. I know with the way things are now, its risky to be throwing bags at 5-stars... but others are, so why aren't we?

I suspect this is true, but big is relative. Duke, KU, Kentucky, NC, almost certainly have boatloads of money for recruiting that few programs do. Even if the money is in the top-15 or so (and I wouldn't bet my beach house on it), that still means you'd have to target your resources, given the roster has 7-9 guys getting most of the minutes, and lots of programs valuing or competing for talent in different ways.
