Or to put another way, if you could guarantee for the next ten years that every year you'd get the #1 and #4 in-state recruits + a top 50 player, and supplement the rest of the roster with the transfer portal, do you set that in stone now?

Sounds like Chin leaving really was addition through subtraction, creating room for assistants who are better at closing.
It seems to me that Illinois really has suffered from from some "less than stellar" assistant coaches over the last 20 years when it comes to recruiting. Chester and TA excluded. Jerrance Howard and Tracey Webster turned out to be awful. Weber didn't seem to much care for the recruiting side of college basketball, which left us massively behind in talent procurement.
You think you don't have to keep recruiting a top 30 prospect after he verbally "commits"? He might have stated he made his decision, but that doesn't mean there aren't a bunch of people trying to change his mind. A kid like that, you don't stop recruiting until he's at practice.

I agree with you. I will give props to retaining the talent. In regards to all the developmental pieces at are being talked about that some indicated are essential to fill out a roster, can we agree that we now have the developmental pieces in place(with our last few recruits being exactly that - Nico, Jason, Jase) and we should now start seeing our roster being filled by impact players?
The problem is we haven't kept the 3 stars in the program long enough to develop them. I'm all for building with HS kids and only filling needs with the portal, but you have to keep the kids there.Loyalty: "We love mid major transfers that dominate for one or two years and then join us!"
Also Loyalty: "We don't need 3 stars to develop in our own program."
Heck, based on the current landscape, you better also be recruiting them at practice, after practice, and when you tuck them in at night up until graduation.
I still believe most of our frustration around recruiting comes from having two lead guards leave as freshmen last year. Then whiffing in front of the entire nation on RayJ, and then following it up by basically putting yourself in the same position as last year. Which is having no trusted lead guard anywhere on the roster except instead of two freshmen combo guards, we are entrusting those duties to a sophomore PF who hasn't run the point in college.
I'd say our biggest issue is getting talent to stay and maybe even getting it to develop, which to hand in hand.
If Brad knows we are getting our PG in 2024, I have no issue on a flyer sitting behind him. Same goes for JJ. It's not flashy, but Brad has hit enough on those guys to give him some more leash.

Strongly agree with the former. It's one of my main frustrations with the current staff. Too much player turnover. I also feel like they just didn't have good control over the team in general last season. Lot of things pointing to a very wounded culture. My other frustration is with regard to the tournament results. I get how random it is, but we have looked like a deer-in-headlights in about every single NCAA game I've seen us play under this regime.
Talent identification and player development has been their strong-suit though, in my opinion. We have a couple 4 star guys in Ayo & Kofi that went on to become 1st Team AAs and they brought in a 10ppg transfer from Texas Tech who the national media & talking heads are discussing as a 1st team AA as well. We also have Hawkins who was a 3 star recruit and he's been showing up in mock drafts even since the beginning of last season. Plummer was also a kid that wasn't highly sought after that ended up scoring 15 ppg for us and filled a role that was so desperately needed.
My thing with recruiting is that it seems we are more focused on pointing our NIL dollars more toward already-proven players via the transfer portal than throwing money at highly rated HS recruits. Which might be okay... Clark was an absolute disaster, and from what I gather, effectively stole money from our program. Many of us have come to completely ignore the transfer portal altogether, even though its probably the 1A method of acquiring talent in the current state of things, as if the three 4 star, already-proven, ready-to-contribute-now guys that we landed just a few months ago do not exist at all.

Serious question here. Not trying to be sarcastic or start any fights. Brad tried and tried and tried and tried to get a point guard in the portal. Failed miserably. Now, we currently have a potential signing class that has no point guards for next year. Is he putting all his eggs in the DGL and Ty Rodgers basket?
Hey Indy. I dont think I have ever seen anyone say that Chin cost us THT. Why do you say that? I was under the impression that due to AAU drama, THT left Ayo's AAU team and went to Meanstreets. What does Chin have to do with what happened besides his ties to Ayo's AAU team?
Just curious, why does Cal still put up with him? Just his connections?
Well Cal's seat isn't exactly cool, and he's been looking at other jobs the past few off seasons....so hard to hire and fire when you are sniffing around other jobs.

Kofi didn't need to pass out of the post. Even with doubles and triples, it was absolutely amazing how many times he would score, or get his own rebound and score. If ever a player was a victim of his own success, it was Kofi. Career 60% FGs, but it would have helped his pro prospects if he'd passed out of of the post more.
Lotta interesting posts on our recruitin history. I don't think it's fair to BU to compare the first couple years --he inherited a mess. Looking at the past couple years, it seems to me it's a mixed bag. Kudos for getting guys like Ayo and Kofi to stay, and same for TSJ and CoHawk this year. Definitely some misses, and I think he learned some hard lessons this last year. Keeping players in this era is hard.
That's been a common perception, and I think justifiably so. I dont' blame BU for taking a chance on the roster he put together --on paper that team looked like a good bet. And early, they proved they were a good bet...and then things fell apart. FWIW, I don't expect a repeat of that fade --I think BU puts a premium on character/culture and last year's issues were something he won't soon forget.
BU won't win everyone over until he sees tourney success. Message board guys gonna message. Kinda sucks, but even a successful season isn't going to matter that much if he doesn't win some tourney games.
