I'm so over "stars". It's a guide folks. Not an absolute.

Have you been to a 3 Star restaurant and had a 5 Star experience? I have.
Have you been to a 5 Star hotel and had a 3 Star experience? I have.

I give this post 2.5 Stars.

Edit: added .5 Stars for excessive use of "star".

I give this post 4 beach houses (out of 5).

Ya know who didn’t put stock into Jase Butler? Every other P5 program in America that saw him play. I hope Jase is fantastic and everybody who passed on him looks foolish but we’re about to trout out a forward at PG because we have failed to develop, recruit, or retain a single viable other option at the position. We just signed a combo guard that nobody else wanted. I think it’s high time we start asking a few questions and stop living in this blind faith bubble.
While Im not saying its time to panic(we're far from it but our last few commits give me a touch of concern), I will say some of the "coping posts" are eerily similar to what we were seeing with Weber when some of us were criticizing him for not being able to capitalize on the recruiting end after the 2004-2005 season or living up to the recruiting standard we had the past few decades. People that were saying "im a bit concerned about the recruiting" were viciously attacked with the common slogan of "ranking dont matter" and Bruce will "coach 'em up"

I also believe that Weber is a perfect example of how important top rated players are. With talent(Selfs roster - highly rated roster) we went to the national championship. Without top talent(full of 3-star sleepers sprinkled with an occasional 4 star) he struggled to make the tournament.

Having said all that. My faith will be fully restored and my concerns will be squashed if we see Fears in an orange and blue jersey.

respect my decision™
Fears will be an Illini. Pops wanted Jeremy Jr. to be in orange & blue too. He’ll play the game for a little longer to pad the resume but it’s happening. And it’s fantastic. He’s REALLY REALLY good. Probably a 2 & out guy. Maybe lottery pick

that's pretty flippin' good news. FWLIW, I'm a true believer when it comes to Jeremiah. Barring a major setback, fully believe that he'll have a long and impactful NBA career. Agree that he should be a 2 year college guy.

2023 UConn had no 5 stars but the #7 recruiting class in the country in 2022, and #2 transfer class the year before.

2022 Kansas have to make a correction. Didn’t have a 5 star but had top 10 recruiting classes every year leading up to it.

I’ll give you Baylor and Virginia. Then the next ~20 years before that every single team had a 5 star recruit. So about 20/23 teams that have won the last 23 Nattys have had 5 star recruits.

Not saying Jace is going to be a bad player or that he won’t contribute, he very well might. But clearly, higher ranked recruits equates to more success.

So you're confirming the facts I provided, that's a start. We also have had good recruiting & transfer classes. Like I was saying, our roster looks similar to (or better than in some cases) all of those listed. The class in particular (2024) that you guys are currently poo-pooing is now rated 10th in the country by 247.

Okay I think I've talked myself into this one...
There is something pleasing to the eye about watching someone who plays under control. Gotta get crafty when you can't blow by people. Love how comfortable he looks with defenders up on him - has no intention of giving up his dribble when he gets bumped, invites contact and uses that against his defender, creates space to finish near the rim or on the perimeter to get a shot off. Love his release as well as general posture on his shot. Feels better than whatever % he shot over the summer. Definitely the kind of guy that if he has a good game, the opposing team is asking "how the hell is this guy killing us?"
Brad saw booty-ball and it was like Wayne seeing the '64 Strat.
I like this young man a great deal. 1 or 2 years of Fletch, he will be quicker and more explosive. Polish the diamond and see if it ends up being priceless. His intangibles are there. Welcome.

Its only ranked so high due to a kid that committed almost 2 years ago. The concern is the recent recruiting.

The expectation is that he wins. Period.
Win? Like how much is the expectation? I always find that phrase so vague as to be meaningless.

I'm guessing 15-14 would be below your expectations, despite it being a winning record. But did last year meet your expectations?

My personal expectation is that we are in the top 25 at the end of the year. better years you're even stronger and each year that puts you in a position to make noise, and hopefully make a run occasionally. I'm not convinced our combo recruiting and portal work is getting us there.

Not good enough for a coach whose salary is in the top 10 nationally. Expectations should be contending for the B1G title and sweet 16.

I've watched him up close & personal a few times and he's the real deal. In the gym range, elite pace/hesitation, creative finisher, ambidextrous, super quick twitch athlete. I've talked to more than a few NBA guys who are already salivating

Exactly this. And all this "trust in the staff" stuff? With Hawkins and Shannon returning we should be contending for a B1G title. Instead we project middle of the pack because they forgot about the point guard position. Trust should be earned. Not given just because someone holds the title of "Illini Coach." Lots of Pollyannaing going on over here without much basis at all.

Didn't we say this about TSJ out of high school? We ended up paying him anyway and could argue was a missing piece on the Ayo/Kofi teams

We didn’t have the right guy on staff to get TJ at the time … Now that it’s in the past … Facts are Chin cost us THT, and TJ … And Walker cost us EJ …

I would also argue we were missing Liddell on those Ayo/Kofi teams more than TJ …

We had also committed right around 85% of our salary cap to Ayo & Kofi … And knew we had Ace Wolf coming on the books the next year …

Sounds messy. Hope you always pack a parka

Agree.
Would have loved to see this team.

I don't think ratings are everything.

I also don't think its crazy to be a little disappointed with the 2 years in recruiting this class with a potential (probable?) 5 star burger boy committed for multiple years. Don't get that opportunity hardly ever.

What is Fears' recruitment like with regard to MSU? I've read here and from Piper that we're definitely at the top, but it's hard to overlook them when he & his brother played together in high school and we allegedly backed off Jeremy towards the end of his recruitment.. No idea how true that is or whether that lack of prioritization (if true) towards the end would rub the camp/family the wrong way, even if only slightly so.

I havent kept up closely with his recruitment, so no idea what his level of interest is in MSU or vice versa as it doesn't appear he's had an OV there but know he's been on campus..Knowing his brother is there makes it hard for me to feel good about his recruitment even considering MSU has Akins, Holloman, and Jeremy at guard spots.

MSU isn’t in his top 3 …

But if Jeremy is 2-and-done, as some on this board have suggested, then it's a moot point. His brother would no longer be in East Lansing when Jeremiah got there anyway.
