DGL, Moretti, and Fears are all smaller guards. Hawk is a unicorn not likely to be replaced with equivalent. Booty ball and switching will not work. It would appear to me that both offensive and defensive systems must change radically next year. Transfer portal could change that but which players fit next year could be dramatically different than the players that fit this year.
Good point Ga... I'm still hoping we stay with the big guards & wings approach overall & mix in a smaller guard for change of pace etc

Makes sense, you work with what you got. Booty ball has and will work with the right people. We have seen if you don't have a point gaurd that can break down the defense with downhill attack and ball handling skills that this is another affective way to run an offense. While defensively its nice to have everybody taller than 6'6 on the floor but it's not always possible. Some of the teams we have struggled the most with defensively have had those 6-6'2 point gaurds that we can't keep out of the lane. Fears, Moretti and DGL to some extent can all turn into that type of guard for us.

If he plays with the intensity of TF on the defensive end, then he will be a heck of a player. I'm not familiar with his dedication on the defensive end, but that is always my concern when talking about bringing in a highly touted freshman guard known for his offense. That said, after the Skyy/Epps fiasco, I assume Fears wouldn't come here if he didn't know he'll have to play his !!! off on D to see the floor.
Good point. We have seen proof that a team with tall yet quick guards is pretty effective at defending what is today's biggest weapon....the 3 ball. Ty and Shannon make it very difficult for those 6'-6'2" guards to get a shot off....making them have to drive into Hawk's shot blocking talents.

Fears is 6'3" or somewhere close and quick enough to guard the arc and the lane....if he wants to. I can't imagine he would commit to Illinois if he did not want to become elite at both ends. Recruits must understand that is required.

That said, if offensive players are good enough, and patient, they can rub anyone off with a good screen. The recovery by defensive players is what makes teams elite. Everyone has to play defense....no one can hide.

Unless he means “3 feet,” in which case it’s an extremely long neck.

Really expect to see Ty at PG next year. Moretti the backup or maybe Butler (at 6’4”). DGL a terrific athlete but don’t see where he fits. He and Dain are really good players but don’t fit the current system. Also expect Sencire to be able to shoot and he will be the new one man fast break. Will be surprised if there isn’t a big from the portal. Difficult for me to imagine equivalent players for Ty, Hawk, and Marcus. But then I didn’t imagine what we would get from those guys this year. Need to enjoy this year.

I see ty and morez starting but ty will probably go back to 3-4....maybe goode too. The portal will fill in the rest of the starting pieces.

Went to see Jaxson Davis play last night. Wow that kid has the potential to be something very special. Hard to wrap head around him being a freshman. Playing on a somewhat bum ankle and had a casual 22/10/8 or something. Kid gets everyone involved too. Very impressive

I think he does well if Beard stays at TTU. Beard leaving, and TTU installing a coach heavily focused on defense, did him no favors.

Jase Butler is listed at 6’4”. Good size for a PG. if DGL listens to mom, he won’t be here trying to defend the bigger guards anyway. Hope he stays and gets as mentally tough as Coleman has become. But, I digress.
