One question i have, based on the "maybe a 5" part, is:

If we DON'T get a 5 in the portal, what would the plan be to stop teams with top tier bigs? It seems to me that Amani and Rez (and Coleman if he happens to come back) would be better off guarding 4s if we can help it.

And all 3 of those players listed look pretty good to me, it's nothing against any of them. But it just seems to me that we would really struggle against certain teams, and therefore we'd likely have a certain ceiling for the season, if we don't get a legit 5. Or are we thinking Rez and Amani can cover that role? Honest questions, I'm looking to get educated on what the thought process might be.
Exactly. As we saw with Edey and Clingan... inability to defend the post, and attack the post ,against top tier teams with 7' plus talented bigs pretty much sets a ceiling for the team.

It depends ...

There is almost always a down payment ...
Not sure what happened, but that lineman from Iowa that went to Bama and transferred to Iowa only to transfer back must have got something up front. Iowa people weren’t happy. We were happy though!

Players have talked with coaches a bit this week. Official meetings are going to start on Monday, so we should start to see some movement then. I expect 2 more transfers out and at most 3. I think there is a legit chance for both Marcus and Coleman to come back. A lot of factors will play into that though-Marcus waiver is probably 50/50, Coleman could depend on his knee.

They really want Maddox. I think they like Hill as well. Also, Boswell should be entering the portal next week. The question is do you take two of those guys plus a wing or two (Storr or someone else)? This could piss off a couple of guys on the team but it gives you more proven talent right away. Also I know they really want a stretch 4 and also maybe a 5, so that will be interesting to see what happens as well.

They really like these three kids at the four (we have been linked to all three publicly as well):

I know Amani wants to stay and the staff loves him but if they add two bigs, would be interesting to see what his outlook would be. Still think he would stay, but I would be curious to see what happens with that

Also, AJ Storr remains the #1 priority right now. Kentucky is our main challenger there but I think we have a clear edge right now. Gonna try and close that one down in the next couple of weeks.

I expect them to add at least four transfers, could be five or six depending on who leaves and what happens with Marcus and Coleman. They are hoping to have a Domask answer in the next two to three weeks
If adding 2 bigs mean we have a significant chance of losing Amani, then aren't we just chasing our tails at that point? Why bring in both a starter and backup unless you really don't trust your returning true freshman, who I honestly thought showed more than enough glimpses of really good things to come this past year? Especially if you might only be getting negligible value. Makes very little sense to me other than from a shiny new toy, grass is always greener perspective.

I agree with how Brad attacks the portal for the most part, but Amani is a high end recruit who showed a lot of promise and plays with effort and toughness and has a decent shot. If you can't develop that into at least a decent backup by sophomore season, then what are we doing even recruiting players who aren't 1 and dones?

Coleman is a high potential player but will never be a high volume shooter. Unlike last season I don't think he improves himself by coming back.
He showed some nice moves to the basket during NCAA tournament. NBA can see the potential with his athleticism, handles, outside shot, and basketball IQ. Even if he comes back he will never be Kevin Durant. JMO even with nagging knee he will be late 2nd round draftee or sign with a good team for G-league. I would love for him to free agent sign with quality team like Golden State, Oklahoma City, Indiana, Miami or San Antonio where he will be developed. Kendrick Nunn should never have left Miami - leaving / plus the injury ended his NBA career.

I am surprised that people talk about 2 more transfers. I think Amani can play the 5 and will not be intimidated by any upper classman transfer. Ty was a solid starter and knows he has to develop a mid range jumper to progress to next level and NBA. DGL saw relevant playing time in NCAA tourney and from social media posts looks happy. Nico seems undersized but did well when he played. I could see him going to back Europe like the french guy Perrine. Luke has been the most loyal team first player we have had since Chester. Sencire seems loyal to Illinois. If he has improved his offense he should see significant uptick in playing time due to his fantastic defense.

We only have 2 returning 20 mpg starters Luke and Ty. Wide open playing time for Amani, DGL, Sencire, Morez and any portal transfer ins.

I can't see there being more opportunity for minutes anywhere else unless you drop down to mid major like Dain did at Memphis. Penny has won one NCAA game in 5 years and been repeatedly investigated by NCAA.

It's exactly this type of rigidity that's simply ruining the board. I used to be an absolutist about it, too, but have learned to enjoy the occasional cube, particularly in sweltering weather.
Especially for whiskeys with ABV OF 50 or better,

Agreed. What’s the old saying? The best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores? Something like that…
Amani is going to get a lot stronger this offseason, as long as he listens to the coaches. I’ve seen him absolutely shoot the nets off in warmup before games. The only silver lining in that eyesore last Saturday was Amani showing us a glimpse of it in a game.
He may not be 7 feet tall, but he has the frame of a guy who could be a bully down low.

You don’t have to have a super skilled leviathan at the 5 to win a title, though it helps. You absolutely need some dudes who are strong enough to compete and hold their ground. If you play a guy like that, you’d better hit your open shots.

Maybe, but his per 40 numbers are way above 15 and 8
Ok, but that also has him taking 15 shots, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks & a steal.

Dain barely played D for the majority of the season and it's unlikely he gets 15 shots a game or shoots as efficiently when asked to play more than 8 mpg.

Their recent 1st round big men have been true freshmen. Drafted for upside, not necessarily for what they did at Memphis.

Dain is a full-grown man with a big booty and a big bag of tricks.
I really appreciate what he did for the Illini this season and would be happy to be proven wrong as DD seems like a really nice guy.

...still taking the under.

Thank you for all the updates we all appreciate it!

Curious how someone could put a percentage on the Domask waiver? The NCAA seems to be a complete crapshoot on these things so wonder how anyone can handicap what they’re going to do? Or is that precisely why it’s 50/50 — no one knows so a coinflip is as accurate as anyone trying to make a prediction.

He was pretty efficient last year playing 20 mpg.

I don't even think his defense is that bad. It's not good. But I'd call it serviceable. Our post defenders had a lot of pressure put on them by our perimeter defense this year. His biggest weakness, IMO, is rebounding.

I've been on the Dain Train since the beginning. I've said that Dain could be All Big Ten material by his senior year and I still believe that.

I expect him to do big things next year. Of course, I also thought the same about Epps and Curbelo after they transferred.

Coleman vs No Coleman makes such a titanic difference in that regard it's a little tough to define what our needs would be.

I think we know for certain that Coleman's intent was to go pro. But if he's actually going to have surgery that takes him out of the pre-draft process, I'm sure other possibilities creep into consideration.
Hope he does a better job of communicating his plans this year, last year he wasn't the best at letting the staff know what he was thinking.

I like DD, but Memphis is a train wreck where 1st round pick big men the last decade haven't put up 15 & 8.

I hope he does, but the under is the play.
Agree. Duren averaged 12 and 8, and no big since then has hit that. 15 and 8 is probably reasonable guess, but if I had to bet the over or under I’d definitely go under.
