Yeah..but having a 5 that is actually a shooter is fairly rare...especially if we want a guy bigger than Coleman.

Cam Corhen seems like a nice fit though, right? I thought I read he was a shooter, and I vaguely remembering recruiting him...think he was a late-bloomer in high school and committed somewhat later, but we lost out?

Insiders...Is Corhen a good option or an option at all for us??
Yeah, there were some highlights of Garrison shooting some midrange jumpers, but he took zero 3s, I think, so yeah he's not really a shooter. But it also looks like Corhen was maybe told not to shoot 3s this year, either. He shot a few, not very well, as a freshman, but only took 2 and missed them both as a sophomore. And if you're willing to go a bit smaller in Corhen, then I start to think, well should we just try for Carey Booth, then? He's listed at 6'10' too but looks skinnier, but he shoots a fair number of 3s, although he only made 30% as a freshman. (although wasn't that similar to Coleman too?)

Is there a scenario where Ty comes off the bench in order to facilitate playing a true 5 if you don't get a shooter like Raynaud at the 5?

edit: hadn't seen PasadenaIllini's post about Ty potentially not starting next year, nor the stuff about Garrison maybe being significantly shorter than listed. That might change things - if he has a body similar to Morez or Amani, then I'd probably rather just stick with those 2.

Supposedly Garrison only measures in at 6’8 and not his listed 6’11

I'll root for Dain Dainja every single day other than if he plays a game against Illinois, but even then I'd root for him to have individual success but not team success. There are many players who would have acted like a prima donna in his situation this past season...games we were completely ineffective down low when he didn't play a single minute when he should have at least gotten a look when he did nothing but support his teammates. Add that to the work he did to get his body into the best shape he's ever been in, and I don't know how an Illini fan can't be a huge Dain supporter. Safe travels Dain. Hopefully both the city and the University of Memphis are great to you.
couldn't have said it better so I'll just copy yours.

I know it’s rare, but so is a non-5 that doesn’t shoot outside of the paint. We’d be severely limited.

While he was generously listed at 6-foot-11, after measuring in at closer to 6-foot-8 in high school, Garrison provides size, length, and a sturdy interior presence. He can executive defensive coverages and offensive sets alike and is typically credited for his good awareness on both ends of the floor.

That’s from 247
Still averaged 1.5 blocks as a Freshman. Not too bad.

upside is key, especially when considering younger guys. am definitely not an expert on Booth, so take this with a big grain of salt: it seems like he has the highest ceiling of the 3 young bigs we're kicking the tires on (Corhen, Garrison, Booth). that's saying something, as I was a major Corhen guy last go round.

You could say that for 348 Div basketball schools. There is only one Edey and one Clingan which is why they are both All Americans,
If Coleman comes back I really really want us to get him a decent 5 to play with.
We were a top 10 team this season, and have been pretty dang good the four years before this year, so I'd think our chances of getting a decent 5 are better than about 338 of those other teams you mentioned.

So I was looking at Garrison as someone with the size and game of a true 5, but perhaps that's not accurate. I think those other 2 would be better as 4s than 5s. And I think that's probably true of Morez and Amani, too. So in my mind it's back to the problem of how do you handle top-tier 5s, which we will run into sooner or later if we want to make another deep run. Although a lineup of Rez, Amani, Booth and then 2 guards might be fun, if one of those 3 is quick enough laterally to guard a 3 like Coleman was/is.

One question i have, based on the "maybe a 5" part, is:

If we DON'T get a 5 in the portal, what would the plan be to stop teams with top tier bigs? It seems to me that Amani and Rez (and Coleman if he happens to come back) would be better off guarding 4s if we can help it.

And all 3 of those players listed look pretty good to me, it's nothing against any of them. But it just seems to me that we would really struggle against certain teams, and therefore we'd likely have a certain ceiling for the season, if we don't get a legit 5. Or are we thinking Rez and Amani can cover that role? Honest questions, I'm looking to get educated on what the thought process might be.
I absolutely agree with you that a 5 should be the priority add since the roster has far more guys capable of playing the 4.

However, there probably won't be a single big in the NCAA next year as good as either Edey or Clingan. Those types of guys aren't around very often.

Also, college teams win all the time without having a 7 footer or even anyone bigger than 6'9. Villanova didn't really have a true big on their second title team, and I don't remember one playing a ton of minutes on any of Baylor or Virginia when they won recently(Houston also never seems to have a guy over 6'8ish lately).

Plus, I think both Amani and Morez are capable of giving you minutes at the 5 so I don't think you necessarily need to make a splashy move. Just a defensive minded big that could give you 20 minutes would be fine. Though if Coleman came back someone in the mold of a Kalkbrenner type would be a very good fit next to him.

Amani will play a lot next year. Here or somewhere else. If more bigs come in and he sees a smaller role here he will go. That's my prediction. So whoever comes in has to be a clear step up or we will be running in place.

Yup. Quality 7 footers are pretty rare in college ball. I'd love to get one (the Stanford transfer would be #1 on my list), but we're by no means doomed if we don't.
