as a beat up illini fan, i get the feeling Domask would get that waiver if we were a blue blood.
Cam Spencer didn't get it at UConn.

It's really not that subjective or complicated. It's not like the "hardship" one that Luke Ford was denied with a compelling case whereas Justin Fields got it the same offseason with no apparent case at all.

I thought Cam played in the second half of the season making the situations completely different when looking at the rulebook.

This would be my ideal portal haul/realistic:
Boswell
Oweh or Maddox
Storr (If Domask comes back, then maybe different)
Goode/Coleman/stretch 4 from the portal
Transfer 5
Overall, they want:
A lead pg
A 2/3 that has some versatility (Maddox, Hill, Oweh, etc)
Storr
Stretch 4 if Coleman is gone
5 man no matter what
Maddox and Oweh aren’t mutually exclusive.

Spencer did play his 5 games at the end of the season, which is counter to what the rulebook on medical redshirts says. Domask played in more games than are allowed under the rulebook, regardless of any possible definition of the length of that SIU season, tweeted rumors to the contrary being flatly and obviously incorrect as ten seconds of googling indicate.

But neither matters.

The operative fact is that the NCAA has repeatedly made clear that no eligibility can be given back for 2020-21 because no eligibility was expended.

You know who really got screwed by this? Ivy League players. The Ivy League canceled their entire season due to Covid, the teams shut down, no games, no practices, Ivy League basketball did not exist.

A star UNC women's player who transferred from Princeton sought a waiver to give her back that season that was lost based on the league's decision. She was denied

St. John's has two former Ivy League players in the same position. They are also seeking waivers like Domask currently

"Both players’ waiver applications are unlikely to be accepted"

Feel free to dislike the NCAA's rationale here. But it is absolutely objective and clear and has been applied in a resolutely consistent manner, which will continue in Domask's case.

I appreciate Bulleit, Buffalo Trace, McKenna, etc., and lots of JD in college, but Wild Turkey 101 has been my go to for 40 years. And my grandfather's before that.
A very underappreciated drink of whiskey, and very much a trendsetter for over-proofed bourbons.

I would add that simply asking the NCAA grant a waiver and taking them to court over it would likely have different outcomes. The NCAA hasn’t fared well in the courtroom and the Domasks have reportedly hired an attorney.

Ty and Amani are leaving?

The staffs job is to put together the best possible roster every year. Doesn’t matter where those players come from.
If Amani is relegated to mop up duty and Ty is relegated to the bench this season, we'll see if either are still on the team after next season. I do not deny it's the staff's job to build the best team possible, however I do not believe getting 4 new starters every year from the portal will do that. I think you'll have good years like this one, and bad ones like 2 years ago, but you'll eventually not be building to anything other than relying on who your flavor of the day is the following offseason. And maybe we do win every single one of those transfer recruiting battles we want every year, and maybe we don't, but from a chemistry and teambuilding perspective, being on the team as a freshman thru junior and understanding you're going to be recruited over every single year with no steady leader or continuity outside of the coach, I just don't see creating a long-term positive environment for morale. We can agree to disagree and that's fine, but I just don't see it as a recipe for an eventual title run, which is what Brad in theory is trying to build to.

As much as I would selfishly want Domask back, he's had his 4 full years playing college basketball. Someone else deserves a turn.

Ty Rogers is one of my favorite players... but IIRC I've heard Piper say on the radio that Ty's mid-range jump shot in practice did not look good this year. He was being polite but it basically sounded like his shot was brutal.

Have they tried everything with Ty-- have they brought in some fancy shooting coach to try to retool his shot?

The guy went from 38% to 58% on free throws so I am still holding out some hope. I also wonder if he could hit a wide open, straight-on three pointer... if we are talking baby steps, that would be an obvious one.

I don’t know if he will ever get there
We saw big improvements in Ty's ball handling and foul shooting skills during this past season. It isn't too far fetched for me to believe that he might develop an outside shot over the summer, although that certainly isn't an outcome you'd want to count on.
