The Tre White description from the Athletic's transfer portal rankings. The underlined portions seem particularity relevant here.

Tre White - #88 (as of 4/5/24)

Ht: 6-7 Wt: 205

... remarkable defensive versatility across multiple positions. At Louisville, White did basically the same thing on offense while strangely providing none of the defense that made him such an effective player at USC. I’m genuinely not sure what happened. His effort level wasn’t there regularly, particularly in transition defense. Maybe he was just a poor fit with Kenny Payne’s coaching style. But he needs to get back to the level he previously showed.
That is actually pretty interesting. How can a guy be a good defender and then forget how to do that? Might well be poor team culture at Louisville and something that could be completely solved at Illinois. That would be great.

Hope that proves to be the case.

Refer to my post that the next transfer would be a forward. It came down to money. Amos didn’t want to accept the offer. Hello Tre!

That's encouraging, in a way.

He's obviously got the length and athleticism to guard if he puts the effort and focus in.

On some level I don't really worry about him being a lazy malcontent, because Goode, Rodgers and Harris will just swallow up all his playing time with ease.

Not sure what all the complaints are about White. 6’7 wing that seems to be able to handle the ball well, has some crafty finishing skills, and seems to have a bit of a midrange / booty ball game. He appears to be able to get his own shot. We didn’t have anyone near his level of talent off the bench last year.

If he doesn’t work out he can ride the pine. Defensive effort can be coached unless he is just a totally low IQ player on that end, he had the athleticism and length to be a plus defender.

This year our team showed the value of having size across the board (other than at center of course). UConn also has the same formula. Lots of size and length. Five teams trouble on the perimeter, helps crashing the glass on offense as well.

Tre White: 12.3 ppg/5.9 rpg/46%/30%/75%

Domask 15.9 / 5.0 / 45%/30%/87%
Hawkins 12.1 / 6.1 / 45%/37%/80%
Guerrier 9.6 / 6.1 / 48%/37%/57%
Rogers 6.2 / 5.3 /53%/0%/59%
Dainja 6.1 / 3.6 /67%/0%/48%
Goode 5.7 /3.6 /40%/39%/65%

I find it very difficult to agree with several of you.

Tre White's stats scream starter in Champaign next season! As a sophomore on a bad Louisville team he averaged nearly as much as two of our three All Big Ten players --- Hawkins and Domask.

Doesn't look like a world beater right now but seems like a solid player with two more years. If the NIL # isn't high, I guess why not?
Exactly, he’s definitely flashed at times and was a highly regarded recruit for a reason. We’re not gonna get someone like Marcus hill to accept the role and nil price that white likely agreed to so it’s worth taking a shot on someone with his upside to fill that spot.

This is a completely dishonest take as to why fans on here are questioning this signing. It has nothing to do with him not being top ranked or being a "depth" signing. It has everything to do with him having the worst attitude on the court for a team that had team-wide issues with attitude and effort. Given the views of most Louisville fans on this signing and what I saw defensively from him when I watched Louisville play earlier this season, the concerns expressed are more than reasonable. Character counts. Whether it's from your starters or your bench guys, bad psyche has a negative effect on team chemistry. Hopefully he will prove the doubters wrong, but it's insulting to the intellect of any reasonable observer to call the doubts on this signing unreasonable.
The thing is, it doesn't sound as though he had this problem at USC. He got himself in a bad spot at Louisville and is looking for a second chance. I could see this working out
