What's there to talk about? I'm not gonna begin to unpack that one, other than we can agree to disagree that replacing Domask with a guy who turned the ball over 60% more times this season gives us 4 more wins.
Domask committed 2 mos before Rayj, it wasnt either/or and the staff could've taken someone besides RayJ..

We may not have bested UConn in the end, however if we beat those first two teams you mentioned, we're probably a high 2 seed. That may put us in a different region with the opportunity for Final Four and a National Championship against UConn, which I would've been all for!
Looking back at it I wouldn’t put it past the NCAA selection committee that they intentially put us in the same region as UConn to try and create a roadblock and make it as difficult as possible for the U of I making the Final Four because of the TSJ situation

Regardless, putting RayJ on the floor with his astronomical # of turnovers does not automagically guarantee us 4 more wins. That's pure lunacy, man.

From after Domask committed last year.

I approve of the vote of confidence in my guy Dain, but I can't just let this "oh it's those same negative nancies who don't believe in the staff's scouting like when they all doubted Domask" thing stand.

Lol, I just found my response to the above
We really digging up post from last year?

The only thing that this proves is that nobody really knows what’s gonna happen until the team steps on the court.

Also, I think like 99.999% of the world thought we were getting a PG. if at the time Domask committed, you didn’t think we were getting a PG, I’d love to see that post.

There would not have been booty ball if R J had come to Illini. Marcus wouldn't have been a main weapon with a regular point guard. The Illini team wouldn't have been as good.

If you look at message board off-season chatter as pure entertainment, you’re gonna have a blast the next few month.

If you take off-season chatter as gospel, you’re likely gonna struggle.

Most off-seasons you’re gonna have players that are expected to come here that go somewhere else (like RayJ).

You’re gonna pencil a guy in as a starter, but the lightbulb doesn’t click or the chemistry isn’t there and he comes off the bench instead (like Dainja, who I expected to start last year).

On the flip side, you’re also gonna get the Domasks who far exceed expectations. After watching his tape last year, I wondered how well his game would translate to the B1G. I saw a role player for sure, but wasn’t expecting anything close to 1st team all B1G.

The insiders are just passing along info as they hear it. They aren’t always right because predicting the future is impossible. But that’s not the point. The point is chop it up with a few hundred Illini crazies all day instead of working on spreadsheets at your boring job.

I don't "know". Pretty sure.

Go back a few pages. A question was posed to the insiders about playing time guarantees. No answer. I'm guessing it happens, but people don't want to confirm.

How on earth is it silly or illogical to say games lost in the last minutes with turnovers wouldn't have benefited from an experienced PG?

The MSU & PSU games alone...

Domask had something silly like 3 or 4 turnovers all season in the final 2 minutes of games. He was fine. Our offense was ranked #1 in the country with him leading the charge.

I thought the PG nonsense would die at some point, but we're still complaining about it and our near 30 win season with an Elite 8 appearance ended 2 wks ago lol

The staff deserves confidence that Tre White is going to be developed into the star he had the talent to be in HS, but the staff also deserves confidence that they are cooking and Denzel-ing so elite-ly that Tre White is going to be the 7th man.

It gets tiresome, guys.
I know this is just snark, but it's a lot more than just HS. Everyone seems to agree that Tre had a fine freshman year at USC and a not so fine soph year at UL. No reason he can't have a fine junior year for us and thus be very valuable off the bench. I'm not remembering too many posters here say that's a given as you are suggesting. Your last sentence has a nice ironic ring to it though. LOL

Yeah I saw he doubled his turnover rate last year, I didnt watch a ton of his games so I dont know what happened. Maybe it would've been disastrous, who knows.

We made the Elite 8. I'm hardly complaining, but you can already see from Indy's posts midseason that the staff was focused on it not happening again.

Well that's a shame, because I'd like to go back to the Elite 8 again.

If we're starting a freshman big man, we're probably in trouble.
Generally yes, that's pretty much how it works in the B10. That said, I think people are a little too worried right now about starters vs. bench. Reason I say that is with the overall youth of the team, and with what should be a pretty experienced high energy bench, I think we'll probably split time a bit more than usual this year. Last year we had 7 players getting 19+mpg and that was with TSJ, Marcus, and Coleman all getting about 30+. With what should be a step down of the top end talent along with what should be more competitive depth, I think it's almost a near certainty we'll have at least 7 and maybe even 8 players getting close to 20mpg. So for example, starting Morez vs. having Morez come off the bench will still probably mean around 20mpg for him unless he really overachieves as a freshman or struggles more than expected.

Come on man. A seasoned ball handler to bring it up the court not just Domask.

-4 turnovers in the last 4 minutes of MSU.
-A turnover to get them back in the game and to end it at PSU.

Cut those out & that alone gets us a share of the B10 title.

Also, enough with the post policing. It's an Illinois message board in the offseason. Of course I'm ecstatic about the season, but what do you want me to do, ask Indy for the 98th time if Storr is coming?

Things don't just happen seamlessly. There are knock-on effects. Any number of things could go wrong by adding another player into the locker room. Maybe they're a locker room cancer and it tanks the season. Maybe because we have a point guard, we don't settle on the offense that ended up being second in the nation. Maybe we don't fully unleash MD's potential. Who knows, but rarely in life are things that straightforward. Just seems like a fool's game to believe it'd be that easy.

Pretty sure he did for Clark.
Possibly Ace Wolf and Ty? There were some games this year where starting Ty seemed inexplicable to me. Let’s get down double digits in the first 4 minutes and sub him out inexplicable…

Precisely. That's why all the prognostications now go out the window for our team and every other team as players actually step on the court with each other. I don't really see any difference if we get RayJ. Baylor had a great year with him so it's doubtful he's some sort of cancer. At the same time, we were #6 in the country. Another win gets us to 5? Hardly worth debating.

There's some unknowable scenario where RayJ under BU's wing or Chester's wing or with Domask doing some sort of horse whispering trick turns RayJ into Deron Williams. But adding the RayJ that showed up for Baylor looks to me like an Elite 8 trip just like we got.

I think our must have recruit in this transfer cycle is Boswell. Just looking at his tape, he looks at his best like a future pro, and at worst a really good college player like McCamey. If we don’t get Storr, we can still find other guys to shoot. But Boswell is that elite PG we haven’t had in forever. Sure, no more iso Booty ball but I think running offense thru him we can still be very good offensively
I've wanted him since we were recruiting him in high school. Maybe finally. 😆

So last offseason I did a statistical and metrics based projection based on best comparables for both RayJ and Domask. Interestingly enough, Domask was actually the player suggested as more likely to succeed based on the step up to P5. The comparables to his skills and size all were largely successful after the transfer up and at the time it seemed Domask was pretty underrated and would be a starter level player in the B10. RayJ on the other hand when analyzing his comparables seemed like a higher risk as PGs of his size and skills generally had some struggles at the P5 level and did have a statistically significant falloff, the most likely of which was indeed, a much higher turnover rate.

In fairness, both Domask and Rayj exceeded projections this past year, and 2 data points are only 2 data points, but those projections and subsequent play do question whether we really would have been all that much better with RayJ on the court last year. If we would have been, it actually might have only been nominally.

Our PG wasn't solely responsible for all of those turnovers. Nor was he solely responsible for the two losses.

Maybe in that Penn State game if Coleman doesn't miss 2 FTs and then seconds later foul a 3 point shooter... you know what, nevermind. This isn't even worth my time, and this complaint about not having a PG is utterly ridiculous. We had the #1 offense in the country and the PG we did have was 1st Team All Conf.

Back to recruiting news/posts, please.

You are whining about not getting R J for 10months now.Ifwe woiuld have scored 30morepoints against U Conn we would have been Champs. Forget about R J. And forget about last years recruiting.
