My HS gym, a place that holds so many memories for me, is one of the Iconic small town gyms and is now named for legendary coach Ernie Eveland. When I was in fourth grade, I would go to the gym on Sat. mornings when my parents allowed. On one glorious day, in a pickup game, I was chosen to play on Ernie's team...only to become disillusioned by learning that the coach...who had coached his teams to two state titles and a runner-up in a 5 year stretch.... was one of the biggest ball hogs and poorest team players I have ever witnessed.
So, when the gym was semi-retired after a new school was built, a final game was played in that old gym and I was invited to attend. All of the invitees were asked what their most vivid memory was of that beautiful old facility that seemed to age timelessly. Playing with a legend never entered my mind. I had been attending and playing games there over a period of close to 30 years, having first attended with my grandfather who was maybe the #1 fan of the basketball program. So the answer for me was easy and quite certain.........popcorn! The smell of fresh popcorn meant one thing that always got my adrenaline flowing. It was Gameday!!!
