In general I feel like we should get at least one surefire sniper in our starting lineup, right? Seems like we currently have and are targeting a lot of capable but not great shooters (assuming Goode and Davis off the bench)

TSJ was a top 15 transfer in the portal. He was a blue chip transfer. Marcus, was definitely a diamond in the rough but that very hard to bank on getting one of those every year.

So, yes, this could happen and Brad definitely seems to get the best out of his players. It would just feel better to me to get that blue chipper that is an instant starter, 18 PPG type kid.

I still have trauma from the slogan that "Bruce will coach 'em up" haha
Bruce would have been moey in the portal era, have your assistants buy the best and he would coach them. it was getting the talent.

Maddox plus Conwell is WAY WAY more valuable than Claude.

I don't want to be too down on Claude, he's a real high major player, but he is not in the tier of some of the other guys being discussed.

I agree … If you said take Maddox and Conwell or Claude … I’m taking Maddox and Conwell every day of the week …

And while Claude isn’t an elite level … TJ type of guy … The dude averaged 16,4,4 playing 37 minutes a game on a bum shooting elbow when the teams knew it was him, Quincy or Dayvion taking a shot every possession … And he guarded the other teams best player … He’s better than people are giving him credit for …

I’d rather hear about everyone’s first car and sandwiches!
'67 VW Beetle. Stuck a Team Lotus sticker on engine to give mechanics a big laugh. But that car was sure easy for me and my buddy to pull out of a snow bank while Galaxies, Impalas, Coronets had to be towed!

I love BLTs. Arby's does a good one, but I prefer my own with home-grown tomatoes.

You asked for it; glad I could contribute.

Lol yep. All of us who are old enough are scarred from the end of the Weber tenure.

TSJ was top 15? Mayer was top 10. Just food for thought.

We already have the #27 transfer (nothing to sneeze at when you have 1500-1800 kids entering the portal) and the next two are supposedly going to be the biggest names.

I also think the services are much worse at ranking transfers than they are high school recruits, for whatever reason. Maybe they don't spend as much time on each individual player given that their bread & butter has always been HS recruits and there are like 5x the amount of players to monitor.

I'm in wait and see mode, currently.

The metrics really like his defense.

He was a diamond, but he wasn't hiding. Dude was one of the top 25 scorers in MVC history. While the difference in competition between mid-major and high major isn't negligible, there has never been less of a difference than in the last 5 years.

I tried to tell people last April he would be Robin to TJ's Batman & people thought I was nuts...

Same here @2X2L, except red ‘69 VW Beetle convertible with blacktop and black leather interior. The first car I bought with my own money that I earned. Found it in a Chicago Tribune ad, and since I didn’t know how to drive a stick, my dad had to drive it back home for me, then teach me how to drive it…a great car, which I ended up selling to one of my students to make into a ‘dune buggy,’ the precursor to an atv.

I also love Arby’s BLTs, but their chicken/pecan salad sandwich is even better…

TSJ's per possession metrics were very good before he came here (on respectable usage and minutes). He got even better in his last year here, but he didn't have nearly as far to go to be 1st team B1G as the players being discussed lately. Domask was about the same statistically here as he was the year prior, though that likely reflects some improvement due to the bump in level of competition.

So yes, there was some development there, but they were already very well proven. I hope we can bring in guys as proven as they were, or else we're counting on even more magic (either in player development or finding more talent than there appeared to be)

We have 1 in the fold already that is as proven as they are. Let's wait and see what happens. Roster isn't done yet!

You know much more about Xavier hoops than I do, I have faith in your scouting report. But the efficiency numbers are what they are. Not catastrophically bad (like Zhuric Phelps at SMU) but not good, below the other guys we're talking about.

And the problem is, we and Xavier are essentially executing a Maddox and Conwell for Claude trade here as proposed, you mentioned the NIL figures were super close. Why are we taking the worse end of the deal?

The upside with Tre White (who was more efficient than Claude last year) seems clear to me. I don't see it in this case.

Thank you for mentioning this. We remember the hits but forget the misses. Mayer seemed like an even bigger get than TJ. He was an "instant starter," yet the fit was bad and, by all appearances, his mental makeup did not click with the coaching staff or the players. I wouldn't be surprised if Storr ends up turning out similar in retrospect (also wouldn't be surprised if he killed since the kid has talent).

Point is: we've had the experience of targeting top-rated transfers and hoping talent + talent = more wins. It didn't work out that way. I'm not saying we don't need talented guys on our squad, but people continually underrate fit. So far, all 4 of our transfers have seemingly really wanted to be here. The commits happened quickly and there was no drama. I would love to finish out the transfer season with a couple more big adds but I don't want (or need) BU and Co. to be guided by the 247 rankings developed by people with no skin in the game.

Ehhhh, I don't think the record would reflect that.

There was genuine worry about TSJ's lingering back issues limiting him and maybe hampering his ability to play at all, there was a worry we might get nothing from that move, but his explosiveness was exciting and his two-way game was well known.

Mayer was always a luxury complimentary player, a sort of sure thing contributor from a then-recent CBB champion. Lower ceiling but higher floor.

Both were exciting for sure, and of course we were all rookies at this portal stuff at the time.

It took time to sort it all out. The same will probably be true going forward.

I just kinda don't understand why everyone is totally freaking out about the prospect of us being anything other than last year's team but better immediately in November. That's super unlikely and it's fine?

If you get so Denzel-ified that you're disappointed and anxious not to be ranked in the top 5 in the preseason, consider rethinking the way you digest the information around here. We won the most games in the Big Ten the last five years. These are the good old days.
