Illini finish 2nd in B10, win BTT, go to Elite 8 - GOOD
Illini middle of pack B10 eliminated first round of big dance - BAD

NIL, Portal, etc - don't really care other than happy we are finally on equal footing with cheaters like KY, Duke, etc and sad players don't stay 4 years anymore.

The Transfer Portal facts - you have to play to win

1) The $$ is finally going to those who earned it - good
2) The player can leave for another opportunity - good
3) The player can get "Creaned" if they no longer fit - bad
4) The team with the most $$ will be get the best players - bad, but kind have always been that way
5) Loyalty to the school or player is very rare now - bad
6) The game has changed to who can rebuild a team in 1 year - bad
7) The game itself is a little better IMO, you either gel as a team or not - good
8) The fans are required to have ADD, and root for new players each year - bad
9) The players have to perform to keep their spot, no real development plan - bad
10) Basically a farm club for the NBA

IDK, most people don't like change. I think the the NCAA will need some NIL more rules like $$ caps, multi year deals, .....

Now who are we going to pay at the 5? ... last year showed a good center is very important in this league
My addendum to #4 on your list:
The team with the most $$ will get the highest ranked players
The team with the best evaluators will get the best players.
The team with the best coaches will get the most out of the players they bring in.

Not saying we're definitively any one of the three, but last year worked out pretty well without getting the highest ranked players.

Not sure where you got that 😂 it definitely wasn’t from me. My comment was about Mayer being a big fish that wasn’t worth the hype. People think that, in hindsight, TJ was rated as so much more valuable than our other transfers. That wasn’t true. One high ranking hit (TJ), the other didn’t (MM). In the latter’s case, development from within (Coleman) proved more valuable than our highest rated transfer.
I disagree. I think Mayer was worth the hype. The problem on that team wasn't Mayer.

It was the fact the entire offense was Shannon and Mayer. The guard play was simply atrocious.

I don't know about the pool but I disagree with his take. Not a great draft but I think there are few guys that could be franchise players.

Risacher is a skilled 6'10 shooter with guard skills that will be very good as he fills out his frame.

Castle has a floor of a solid player for a decade with franchise type potential as his shot develops.

Sarr is a stupidly athletic 7 footer.

Coleman may be the last Illini legend that we see stay 4 years with the portal, NIL and NBA options. It would be legendary if he was the only Illini to play 5 full seasons and take us to elite 8 then Final Four.

That sounds way too much like “everything is fine, good night” for my liking

We’re still missing our top two scorers for next season- there is a reason to be nervous- OA will make a huge difference and hopefully he pulls in at least one of those top scorers we need
Take a trip back to April 2023 and revisit this board's recruiting threads. Then after you do that reflect on this past season's team. All I'm saying is give it some time to allow for things to properly play out.

I don't think your definition of franchise player matches most people's.

Not sure if it’s been asked already but what are our chances with Wesley Cardet?

As an optimistic guy and with all CH's trolling,..

My new dream 5:
Boswell at PG
Cardet/Domask at the 2/3
Coleman at the 4
Rez at the 5 (when that works with match ups)

That is one legit way to rank the factors. I don't disagree in any principled fashion. But I would have categorized some of the factors you pin-point differently.

But great job of summarizing and categorizing! Gives a lot to think about.
