See my other post, I don’t think the NCAA could organize a neighborhood birthday party for a 3 year old kid

What in the world are you talking about? Every other post I read is someone freaking out or not being able to follow along with the thread and asking about players that have been talked about over and over. I didn’t even mention people freaking out and you put worlds in my mouth. Why do you feel the need to interject all the time with baseless arguments? It’s gotten beyond annoying to be honest.
Name checks out.../s

Agree, it’s the reason I don’t follow MLB that closely anymore It’s not the same wild, wild west as the portal, but there is a ton of turnover in all pro sports, and college bball is now an openly professional sport.
The current state of play is way, way, WAY more turnover and instability in players than any of the major pro sports. That's important to understand.

Watching players you have no connection with playing against opponents you have no history with. That is the product they're choosing to sell.

The current state of cbb is very similar to european soccer where there are no salary caps and players can switch teams any time when the market is open. The only difference is they have contracts and when they sign with another team the old team is paid a transfer fee. This could be an alternative and i believe it would be common sense to have legal contracts especially with the current mess.

It's time for the NCAA to establish two major changes to the transfer rule
1) You can only transfer 1 time free of penalty. 2nd time is an old school redshirt year.
2) You sign a contract with your university. They are being played like professionals, it's time we establish contracts as well.
NCAA already tried this. A few players challenged this in the courts (including Adam Miller) and won.

Two observations:

It's funny in recent offseasons, there was a narrative from non-Illinois fans that kids transferred from Illinois at a high rate due to coaching style. After such a successful past season, I don't see any of them saying that now despite so many leaving.

Think of how fun it will be for all of the adds throughout the rest of the offseason. The worst is over.

We get it, you don’t like the transfer portal era.

The NCAA can't do it. What if the long-awaited union between the Big Ten and SEC could?

Is that a monopoly acting in restraint of trade? Or is it a market actor governing itself for its commercial benefit in a competitive landscape?

Say the Big Ten and SEC dedicated a percentage of their TV revenue to set up an NIL consortium of their own providing a substantial wage floor for the revenue sport athletes within those two conferences, available to any incoming player for four full years so long as they remain a student in good standing, and the schools forbade transfers between one another. Not a sit out year, no transfers period.

Players can transfer in from outside the Big Two. Players can leave the Big Two freely (but would be giving up their TV contract money to do so, and are entitled to that money whether they're on the team or not, so they don't have to accept a Creaning). But within the Big Two, once you choose a school, you (and the school recruiting you) are locked in for good.

I respect players rights and I've been for players getting paid for well over a decade now but the transfer portal era is so silly lol

Regarding (2), in pro sports, teams don't want to give large guaranteed long-term contracts to unproven players. In college, proven players who are going to stick around for more than another year are rare. Teams (I mean NIL collectives) will only offer multiple years in return for less $ (at least less guaranteed). TBD whether players would go for that.

Edit: all this is to say that as long as teams don't want long term contracts, then they wouldn't ask the NCAA to make them a requirement

We sure Onyenso a lock for Bama? I mean...Quaintance was a lock to LVille a few days ago. We sure Onyenso headed to Bama and that Bama is head and shoulders above everyone as frontrunners for him?

Guidelines, rules, just like any other professional sport (e.g., MLB, NFL, NBA, etc)
EXCEPT that all these have 1) a commissioner, 2) team owners, and 3) players unions.
With the NCAA now neutered, it’s going to get more chaotic until some outside entity steps in. The players actually have all the leverage, but lack a common focus and an organization.
There should be salary caps to ensure some level of fairness in the NCAA

I hate the portal. You can only get to know a player for one or two years max. Something has to be done.
When you take a case to the high courts and win, the toothpaste is out of the tube. No going back.

That said, I don't think that going about it the way we are this year is sustainable. If you use the portal as a supplement, it can work great. If your season hinges on an entirely new roster....a LOT of luck is involved in making it work.

The players would have to agree with it, catch-22 is there no player union representing all players to agree. Otherwise it is simply employers enforcing a salary limit, which is illegal under antitrust laws.

Is someone choosing this? You could make a great argument that the NCAA created this mess by choosing to ignore the eventuality of player compensation, but the current situation is a product of the chaos of that inaction. I don’t think anyone is looking at the current rules and saying “yep… nailed it”, they just can’t do very much about it right now.

And Kansas Duke, KY, AZ, Louisville, UNC, Michigan,UCLA, and AZ would pay people under the table to exceed the cap. Just like they did pre-NIL. At least now it is all in the open and a level playing field.

The NCAA chose inaction, the Power Conferences didn’t take the lead so it was left for lawyers and judges to make the decisions which was the worst group possible to take the lead. The result is what we have today.
