Now were paying big fish money for a mid tier fish.
We're going to need to grow the war chest even more for next year in order to retain most of the talent we've landed in the portal this year.

There's no disincentive from a player's POV to check their market value in the portal every year, and they're also about to watch a future teammate land a more favorable NIL deal because the new guy waited longer to commit than they did.

Becoming increasingly clear that Illinois spectacularly whiffed by thinking they were budgetary savants passing on Storr, and now is trying to sell a 17-year-old playing in Europe (a question mark twice over) and/or the second-best player on a low major as anything other than a disappointment.

Illinois will need to ramp up fundraising for future offseasons or we’re going to see middle-of-the-pack Big Ten finishes and low tourney seeds become the norm moving forward—also the most likely outcome next season based on the roster’s makeup.
So you're an expert now on Kasparas? Good luck with that evaluation.

I have to say that I really like where the program is heading. I don't love the portal, but I like how we are embracing it. I like the rumblings of our current high school prospects. If you don't get lost in the "who we may have missed" or projecting your own goals that may not match the staff's... Looking at the big picture we are trending in a really good upward swing. The game is changing and I don't feel like we are getting left behind.

I think we’ve had some insiders express differing opinions on this one, but “we don’t want to overpay and would rather spend elsewhere” has been the common refrain following more failed pursuits this offseason than Storr alone.
The one that bugs me is that there was an unwillingness to pay a player more than TSJ got last year, which while understandable on some level is simply not how an inflationary market works.

Seriously? Some massive jumps here. It's like all the other guys we have brought in have been for free or bottom of the barrel guys

When everything settles and we lock in our roster ... would love to see how a fan who hasn't read every single daily recruiting thread thinks of the team compared to all of us crazies. I'd imagine opportunity cost bias and counterfactual thinking are huge with all of us here that have followed along with all the drama.

Because I was bored and there's no other recruiting news going on, I figure I may as well get invested in a potential recruit who might not ever even set foot on U.S. soil. :ROFLMAO:

Kasparas Jakucionis is playing with Barcelona B in the Adidas Next Generation tournament in Berlin that starts tomorrow. There are 8 teams, including Real Madrid B with Egor Demin and a U-18 Overtime Elite team.

It appears that the games will be streaming live on YouTube... there could be a potential Real Madrid vs Barcelona finals on Sunday.

Euroleague Basketball ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT Finals Round 1

May 23rd - 6:30 am CT - Barcelona B vs Alba Berlin
May 24th - 8:45 am CT - Barcelona B vs U18 Overtime Elite
May 25th - 6:30 am CT - Barcelona B vs PFBB INSEP Paris

"The two group winners will square off in the ANGT Championship Game on Sunday at 12:30 CET (5:30 am CT) to crown the 2023-24 continental champion."

It's not how a market works period. The value of a good or service is whatever its buyer is willing to pay for it at this time, whether it's my old golf clubs sold via Craigslist or a 3-wing purchased via the portal.

The adds are by and large role players. Pretty good ones, to be clear! And some promise for a bit more than that in guys like Boswell and Hamburger. But I thought this program shot a bit higher than crossing our fingers and hoping guys make a leap… i.e. the difference between “let’s just get stars” and “let’s hope we can get a star with a little luck and a breakout at the right time.”

There’s a reason I’m not out here predicting a tourney miss. The team has some talent and will be competitive. I just had higher hopes than that coming off an E8 season.

As I’ve said, it has become evident that Illinois just isn’t operating with a meaningful NIL advantage anymore, and that is borne out by who they’ve prioritized in the portal and who they have bowed out on. That is what it is, but we don’t need to act so shocked when some folks find that disappointing.

good point. i'll get excited for someone like this when european players win, say, oh i don't know, 5 of the last 6 nba mvp awards.
If we’re predicting outcomes and you’re sitting in the “the staff is going to get a future NBA MVP from Europe” camp while I get to take the big range of outcomes contained in “the transition to college has been challenging for many European players, including extremely talented ones, so it’s unlikely a current 17-year-old will be a star next season…” man, it’s always possible to be wrong, but I’m very comfortable predicting the latter.

We went from Egor
to Watkins
to Lathon and Kasparas/Monsanto
to now just Kasparas

If it would've been Kasparas and Lathon/Monsanto...

or just in general going 2/3 out of those 3 guys...then I think you got something to show.

Sorry...but no matter how you slice it...if Kasparas is gonna be our only add from now on out...that's a disappointment.

It’s fair to say that we’re learning and getting better at adjusting to the ever-evolving portal. We won’t be middle of the pack with this coaching staff. We’ve been dominant the last 5 years and will continue to be a top program. We’ll have a top 25 team entering the season when it’s all said and done.
