If Riley isn’t ranked as a ‘24 anywhere (is he?), not sure this statement holds true.

Not sure why it even matters. If Morez had reclassed and came here a year early, I'd still consider him a top 30 recruit even if technically his ranking might have changed by coming here a year early.

Expectations should be lower for a younger less experienced player.

Or, the same statement expressed another way, a player reclassifying up is slotted into a ranking containing better basketball players than the class they are reclassifying from. The seniors are better than the juniors, all else being equal.

Or you could just be insanely stoked that we'd be getting a player ranked top 15 and stop looking for reasons to depress your own enthusiasm because being a fan should be fun instead of constantly trying to make sure you never get too excited in the name of "pragmatism."

Also not all HS classes are created equal, in 2012 I would've most definitely taken a Junior Wiggins over a Senior Nerlens Noel out of HS. Same with taking a Junior Zion over any of the seniors in the graduating class.

You also know that Riley is older than a lot of the '24 class already right? He's not "younger, less experienced." The issue between Sr and Jr is a physical difference because one year means a lot at that age...the good news is that because of the Canadian school system, Riley is already older than most of the American Seniors (he's older than Cooper Flagg, Ace Bailey, Dylan Harper) we don't have to worry about him being physically mature enough.

I agree. The only difference is height & damonte got to a point when he would at least take & sometimes make a three pointer. Ty might not get there at this level, even though he would put a few up at Thornton. I hope that this offseason features Ty finishing around the rim & stretching out his range. I'm talking 1,500 jumpers a day.
For most of his Jr or Senior year he led the Nation in 3 pt percentage.

I'm just saying, if they re-rank Riley into the 2024 class, expect him to be lower, and don't look at that as some negative judgment on him as a player, that's just the inherent mechanics of how it works.

Regardless, if we get Riley this is still the most incoming freshman talent we've had since the Dee/Deron class and perhaps longer than that.

And it's the most new talent brought into the program in a single offseason ever, bar none, such is the uniqueness of PortalWorld. I don't like having to get to know a whole new roster of players every year and I hope the sport trends away from that, but what an exciting and interesting new roster.

Except it isn't and he already explained why it isn't. The strength/depth of the class matters.

Jay Edwards hitting impossible jumper from behind backboard with 2 seconds to tie the game. Nick hitting half court shot to win.
I sitting 5 rows up center court ($100/seat in 1989 from students scalpers). Place went from deafening to silence with about 30 Illini fans going crazy. Even though Indiana won the B10 title this was the win that got us the #1 seed in Indianapolis which drove Bobby crazy!

All 14 kids on roster (inclduing 4 walkons) were from Illinois. Now we only have 3 - Morez, Jacstys, Boswell (not counting walkon AJ Redd)

Yup. I don't love having almost an entirely new squad, but at least Brad and the staff have made this about the most fascinating collection of guys we could have grabbed. I don't know if it will work, but I could not be more excited to find out. This should be fun.

Riley is ranked as #15 composite for 2025. When he reclasses, he will be ranked in 2024 but if he goes to Illinois, his rating may dip (historically) /s
Hard to tell from highlights (they mostly show best plays only) but Will sure can shoot at all 3 levels. Coaches have watched him and seem adamant he is a go to must have, starter type player. I wouldn't put any pressure on him at first and let him find his level.

I am most excited about Kasparas and Ivisic and then Riley.

Joson Sanon went from 25 5 star to 24 22nd ranked, so maybe 20s?

In 24 at least Flagg, Quintance, & Maluach were all reclasses. And you assume that some of the best reclassed in the previous year.

Other coaches can land groups of big name transfers, but Brad and staff excel at filling the roles that they want on their roster

(someone throws a Monster energy drink can at me, and I realize the Monster can is really just a metaphor for Matthew Mayer but I still stand by the point I'm trying to make)
