How important will "recruiting" be now that everyone is just cutting paychecks?

More important than ever … We only got Riley & Tomi because of relationships O had …

All the “elite” programs can cut the same checks for the most part … What makes you stand out above the rest ?

Relationships, Facilities, Fletch, etc …
Is there a pool of assistance that they will target and go after?

With the de-emphasis of prep recruiting, I wonder what type of recruiters we shall bring in to replace TA in the off season. Is Chicago still important?

What are we going to do w/ 2 7 footers and Morez
In 2005/2006 we had two 7 footers on the floor and ran high low pretty nicely. Morez would probably be the down low guy with the two seven footers playing up top and working outside in as a forward. In certain games and matchups/situations, that could be amazing.

Huh? 2005/2006 was the last year of James Augustine who was not 7’. Are you thinking of 10/11 with Tisdale and Leonard?

In my uneducated opinion, feels like there's been a dearth of can't miss top in-state talent (especially from Chicago) in the last 5 years. Don't know if it's due to top guys leaving the area for prep schools in other parts of the country but can't remember the last time the area had an elite elite prospect (maybe Christie or DJ Steward?).

I for one don't miss the days when the Robert Smith's of the world would send us their B-level players as lip service to the state school while letting Calipari, Self and Izzo waltz in and take the truly elite prospects. I'm not saying Chicago is *unimportant* per se, but Illinois' resurgence in the last half decade coming at the same time when the level of HS recruits coming out of Chicago has fallen says its not a priority like had been in previous decades.

I would have loved for us to snag recruits like Juwan Howard, Anthony Davis, Derrick Rose, and Antoine Walker, but our program just couldn't compete with what the blue bloods of the college basketball world could offer these kids in their time. These recruits aren't commodities. They are people who make their own choices...for sure some with the influence of their families and coaches (and undoubtedly under the table stipends), but it isn't like anyone could have waved their magic wand and made Jahlil Okafor fall in love with John Groce's basketball program instead of Duke.

I agree that it isn't about locking down the state anymore. It's about getting the best players possible from everywhere. If we want to compete for the best for the best prep players, the way to do that is to do what we're doing these days...win on the basketball court consistently over a number of years.

Cook and Augustine ran Bill Self's high low post offense to perfection in 2002-3.

With the shift to 5 out due to the dominance of 3 point shot it is less important. However Tomas is a good passer and had several feeds to Morez last night. Morez has the jumping ability but needs to work on hands.

Having a blend of 2 point scorers like White mid range, Tomas baby hooks, KB/KJ layups and Morez offensive rebound dunks is nice .

Big Z is not doing that well at Arkansas. Might have been mistake to follow Calipari. I like big our big T and Morez combo but if big Z want to transfer and does not demand big NIL why not. You are only 1 injury or transfer away from not having a center.

Sorry, I meant 2004-2005 with Augustine and Ingram. They were both 6'-10" I guess. Even if they weren't a true 7'0" , I still think they did a pretty good job with the high low when they played together that year.

They were rarely on the court together. Ingram was mainly a backup to Augie at C. And neither was that close to 7 ft.

I don't think they ran high low that much. That was not a Weber thing and Ingram was more of a shooter than a passing big. Angie can pass a bit but he low post for most of his offense.

Augie (not Angie) was one of my favorite all time Illini. Undersized but played bigger. Mugged in the National Championship Game.

Him, the Rev, Luthur completed that team and all had special moments...
