Finally got around to watching the Jaylin Sellers clips and I am in.

You guys were t kidding about the TSJ similarities. I’d say he’s a slightly smaller, less strong, less athletic version but with a much smoother jumper, especially pull-up jumper
Anything in the neighborhood is great. There aren't many guys in the NBA who can run and finish at the rim like TJ, let alone in the portal.

Wait...you didn't have enough reasons to hate Michigan before? But there are so, so many.
Juwan left, and Dusty seems like an ok guy. Historically, there are lots of reasons, but we beat them in football and have owned them in basketball recently. So, it kinda waned. I wish the best for Morez, but it stoked the embers of the Michigan hate fire for me a little bit.

It doesn't matter a whole lot and will be more common. I mean we are heavily involved with a kid from Iowa. I'm sure he'll be an enemy of the state there.l for coming here.

Another note on Sellers, in 2023-24 he had the worst on-off Defensive Rating per 100 possessions of any UCF player who played meaningful minutes by a lot

I'm skeptical of this one, not gonna lie. This does not stand out as a profile with potential to play up and grow into higher level competition (which has generally been our M.O. even in cases where it hasn't worked a la Carey Booth)

I have a sick feeling that our Michigan winning streak is going to come to an abrupt halt.🤮.
Hope not, obviously. But the vibe is BAD.
We need to pump the breaks with this. He was a promising prospect that had a role with us. He did a nice job trying to be physical on a team with no physicality.

We're not talking about Cooper Flagg here. If his goal is to expand his game 18-22 feet out, that is COMPLETELY outside of anything that, at this point, is a concern for opponents. You don't think that Brad attended practices and if he showed the ability to extend his game, he wouldn't have been developing that?

We're still talking about a guy who couldn't stay out of foil trouble, couldn't get out to the three point line and drop on the defensive end and we had to hold our breath when he was at the foul stripe.

Did you see him against Kentucky? It wasn't good.

I don't want to come across like I'm bashing the kid because that's my intent. That said, reality time needs to come into play, then we have to move on.

We're still talking about a kid that needs a LOT of development to accomplish what he's trying to accomplish. On top of that, if he struggles, do you think that Michigan will allow the green light? May's job is to win games.

If a talent like Riley transferred there(or anywhere), then I'd worry about a guy taking a team to the next level. Morez can and will be an effective player IF he accepts a role. He doesn't seem ok doing that at this point. It also seems like there was a jealousy there that Tomi had the green light. If/When Z commits, he will also have the green light and that might have been the straw that broke the camels back with Morez. Everyone, but one, on our roster had the blessing to fire away at any time. I'm sure that was frustrating and possibly even embarrassing if he was told to stay in the paint and do his job.

He's definitely a nice pickup for them and his role definitely has to be replaced. Let's not act like we have to break the bank on a 4 that is ok with a defined role. We have PLENTY of PROVEN bigs that can step out and shoot it.

Let's just say you can tell the difference from players from a long time ago to now. Frazier under no circumstance or no amount of money would go to Indiana as a coach. Morez quickly jumped to Michigan. The fact of the matter is the whole bleeding for your school like Dee and Frazier is almost a thing of the past. Sadly what some of these players don't realize is that their marketing goes down. I have spent less money on their shirts, Jerseys and all that because I know the next season chances are they will be moving on somewhere else. Problem is that when jumping from school to school they lose the backing if they don't play pro ball somewhere. A degree from Illinois or any school you spend the years at will get you places that a degree at your 4th or 5th school won't get you.

So any Dix updates? Still us or Indiana? Hopefully it isn't solely, exclusively a "going to the highest bidder" situation because then IU (presumably) mgiht have the leg up.

Took you all of 12 hours to go through the 5 stages of grief?? Impressive.
ADHD isn't just about mental focus, it also affects emotional focus.

Also, Morez was a unicorn in this environment. A kid that committed at 16, never wavered, and kept rising to a top 30 class ranking. Losing him after a single season, especially after getting news that he was going to stay. I heard this (and reported it) outside of this board. So yeah, it sucks. I was hoping that this was the guy who stayed 2-3 years and went pro and was kind of the next Ayo.

Instead I'm just Obi Wan yelling at Anakin about him being the chosen one, but now he's gone to the Dark Side... I mean Michigan.

Some rumors on X, but I shall wait for Indy, Lville, Sharpshot and DB1 to do what they do!

How about a surprise hint or "boom" from Stuemke?

Counterpoint - despite his low rank in defensive Box Plus Minus, he comes out fourth on the team in Defensive Win Shares and top on the team in overall win shares.

I think like I mentioned yesterday - you give him a chance to compete but if the roster fills out such that he's an athletic offensive spark plug that ends up somewhere in the middle of the rotation in terms of minutes (start or off the bench is somewhat irrelevant to me), then I think that's a role he can fill well.

And lets not forget he was doing this in the Big 12 for UCF. Not necessarily a major jump in competition from there.

His defensive rating per 100 possessions the last year he played a meaningful amount was on par with Kylan's last year. (JS:104 ; KB 105)

Part of that calculus that the metric doesn't account for is "Who did you guard"? If you are consistently taking on the other team's alpha, your rating is going to suffer.

A Couple notes BR has on the subject:

  • Out of necessity (owing to a lack of defensive data in the basic boxscore), individual Defensive Ratings are heavily influenced by the team's defensive efficiency. They assume that all teammates are equally good (per minute) at forcing non-steal turnovers and non-block misses, as well as assuming that all teammates face the same number of total possessions per minute.
  • Perhaps as a byproduct, big men tend to have the best Defensive Ratings (although Oliver notes that history's best defensive teams were generally anchored by dominant defensive big men, suggesting that those types of players are the most important to a team's defensive success). A corollary to this is that excellent perimeter defenders who don't steal the ball a lot — for instance, Joe Dumars or Doug Christie — are underrated defensively by DRtg, and are prone to look only as good as their team's overall defense performs.
The bold part should also be considered when considering the defensive prowess of Josh Dix.

Well, fourth on the team in Defensive Win Shares when that's a volume stat and he had the second most minutes on the team kind of tells the same story.

I'm fairly skeptical of defensive analytics in basketball to be honest (good points on it above), I take it with a grain of salt.

It comes back to resources and opportunity cost. Seems fair to assume that Georgetown, Cincinnati and Providence are offering him bigger roles and not insignificant money. If we outbid that, that's a serious allocation on our part. I would really want to know what if any cost savings would come from retaining DGL instead.

Also, just noticed our old pal Omar Payne was on that team.

dont really get all the Ty hype. he's a good player but the fit is everything with him. The portal guys like Dix, Big Z, Sellers, Sarr are far more important to a good team and maximizing that fit.

I'm higher on Morez than that, I think he will be an all-big ten player (if he stays in the big ten), but I agree with you, Brad is the last coach to put reigns on anybody - has he ever told someone to "not shoot" we almost led the nation in three point attempts last season! If Morez could shoot the three - Brad would have been his biggest cheerleader calling him "elite". So the whole narrative that Brad and staff held him back is not credible.

My biggest worry for Morez is his Dad/handlers are going to be vocal and cause drama the minute he's not getting the role they think he should have/they aren't running enough plays for him etc. - we heard that noise in December here. Those types of families can be poison for a program - we've seen it here enough. Now Michigan can deal with that

Creighton people think they have a real shot, staying close to home could be a real factor

I have doubts he was ever told he wasn't allowed to shoot. He was simply needed more to be inside and clean up offensive boards than be hanging around on the perimeter. Anyone who uses him differently is denying him the opportunity to showcase his actual gifts.

It's sad he's gone and infuriating that he went to Michigan, but it's time to move on, at least until we see him on the court...

I realize it’s being petty but I’m not worried about that happening. I’m going to actually be actively rooting for it to happen.

It’s annoying that the girlfriend of Larry Ellison, who attended Illinois but didn’t graduate, is financing Michigan NIL at least for football. The lefty UI professors who refused Shad Kahn the honorary degree are such morons. We need him although I know he’s more of a tennis guy. Maybe some of those other tech guys will step up or have as far as I know. We have our share of billionaire alums.

Does Sellers have one or two years of eligibility
left? I know he was a Senior this year, however,
did he redshirt after the injury? Thanks.
