This happens every year and every year we wind up with very good players. You ARE going to miss on some targets. Just part of the deal. Long portal season left. Like I said yesterday, do everything possible to bring Tomi back and that’s a damn good start to your team.

Oh, and buy stock in Kylan Boswell immediately. He is going to have a big year. He is a much better shooter than what he showed last year. As Gritty mentioned, if Kylan’s three-point percentage gets even a little closer to his career at Arizona, you have an all-conference type player.

Josh really needs to recruit established winners like Warren and Berkshire-Hathaway to CU. It is too difficult to identify mid major investment companies who can be successful in the the B1G, and in the NIL world developing home grown talent to fund your recruiting is clearly a waste of resources for a school like Illinois. \s

I'll say this, we will be totally okay. Tough start but the staff will land several talented guys and be okay. Hoping some good news is coming soon.
If we're taking any silver linings away from Dix heading to Creighton at least he is not in the B1G.

He is going to be a killer at Creighton and good for him for getting paid and going to a school close to where he grew up. Happy to not see Freeman or Dix in the B1G.

Sarr would make up for a lot of woes that this fanbase seems to be feeling. However if we hold onto anything Brad has brought in high caliber talent every year.

Better news always ahead. I-L-L

It sounds like Dix going to Creighton wasn't necessarily money related.

How about Sellers? just wondering if we held back on our offer or they are going somewhere they feel better about?

(I'm honestly not sure which of those I would feel worse about)

I really don’t see a world where Riley is an option to return. But if there’s any chance at all you can get him, it has to be done. I don’t care if it’s 90% of the NIL that is not already obligated.

A mid 1st round pick is guaranteed about $9 million over their first 2 years in the league. I don’t see any way Riley passes that up. You’d have to pay him $5 million. That doesn’t make sense to do it

Totally fine with this result. We have money and space for a better, more complete player
But we won't get one. In the end, we will miss on all of the top portal names (after we've been told that we are in the lead on several of them), pick up a couple of middle of the road transfer portal guys (who will then get talked up on here as if they are lottery picks) and find one or two young foreigners who are anxious to learn how to play Big Ten level American basketball (one may be Sarr, but maybe not). Sorry to be so negative, but I've seen this movie before and I know how it ends.

(If you can't tell, I am really disappointed in the Dix decision, even though I knew he would probably choose Creighton a week ago because of the Owen Freeman decision and the closeness to home).

Cue the Debbie Downer gif.

Better than getting nobody. If we miss out on all our targets, there's no other choice. But I doubt we'll be fortunate enough to have a Will, Tomi, KJ end of game miracle if we were to go that route again.
Well we're not going to get nobody. I guess you mean if we think that freshmen are the best players available? It seems way too early for that yet, to me. I didn't really expect to end up with Dix, but I'm bummed if it's looking like we might miss on Sellers (and maybe also Sarr? It's always hard to read the tea leaves accurately). But I also realize it's still early. Teams are still playing, even.

By the end of the portal season, don't think this will be true. Would love to have him though.
I listed to WDWS podcast with Kendrick and he said he spoke with Rileys mom. He said they know will is too skinny and if the feedback is he needs to get stronger to be a high first round pick then Fletch and U of I is a great spot for that. Now being skinny may not keep him from being a 20ish first rounder but if it does cause him to drop to late first or the second round then maybe the money he could earn and gain next season in the draft may be worth it. That worked for TSJ and may for Will too.

It doesn’t? If Coleman Hawkins gets $2M and Dix supposedly does as well, I’d give $5M to Wil and tell him to plan to be in the lottery or top 5 next year.

More.

It's not about the first contract, it's about getting to the second contract faster. Ayo, as a 2nd round pick, ended up with a 2nd contact at $7 million a year.

For a mid-round guy, the potential is even higher. Jalen Johnson just signed his contract extension coming out of his rookie deal. $30 million a year.

If you give $5m to Riley, you have very little to give anyone else. So the roster around him would suck. And it’s still a risk to Riley to come back and go from mid 1st to higher. Just don’t see any of that happening.

IMO - Underwood HAS to have an “elite” talent, a big time scorer to be successful. Ayo or TSJ or KJ before the injury.

Other than Wil, who can we get that can take over a game on offense? Is Sarr that type of player? Even if he is, I’d prefer a 2nd yr of Wil.

Probably lineup now is looking something like:

Ty
BAM
???? (Sarr?, RILEY?)
Z
Tomi

Bench of
Jake
Ben
2 freshman.

Need that “elite” wing and some more muscle inside.
