Is Shaq worth what he’s getting from Home Depot? Is Caitlin Clark worth what State Farm is paying her? What is the ROI on those celebrity endorsement? Are the stockholders upset about that? I would assume that as long as profits otherwise can be maintained, the cost of doing business will be signed off on, no matter how absurd it may be.
They’re attracting more customers for that business thus producing the ROI. Do the donors get shares in the university? I don’t view donors as stockholders.

I’m pretty sure MJ brought some ROI to Nike.

I think you also have to consider what’s in it for them. In this case it’s essentially pride, because unless I’m crazy there’s no financial return for them.
People pay insane numbers for art. Art is noting if not evocation of a feeling. Does college basketball evoke feelings for you? I can only assume that you are here because it does.
They pay for the experience.
Free market economics barely apply. Sports entertainment is art. People need to stop trying to justify the cost in terms of profit and loss. They are minor players. How desperate are you to see your team win?

That's the thing: nobody knows what anyone is spending

From how everything worked out last year and this year so far, constantly being outbid for players, seems our NIL is closer to the 20-40 range than top 10

So suddenly, athletic departments really need the academics to turn out really successful business people and entrepreneurs (who also like sports)...

Also not spit on them when they do turn out successful (see our school's treatment of Shad Khan)

Maybe and I don't really know anything.

Completely just a take based on feelings from last year and so far this year. And based on those teams I layed out I wouldn't be surprised if 10-20 all had very similar amounts of NIL and there was a very small gap between them, while the teams above them had some more comfort and even 20-40 have enough money to spend on a splash or two.

CAP????? The cheaters would love to have a cap!

Pitino's strategy would be even more valuable with a cap.

But then any business can say paying a college athlete to do endorsements is attracting new customers. Of course, they’d better actually film the commercials… but it’s difficult to quantify a celebrity endorser’s value… especially if they really do t want to.

Appraisal class basically taught fair market value is the price a well informed buyer and well informed seller agree to, in an arms length transaction, and outside of coercive factors.

It's like we have Schrödinger's NIL. It both exists at a high level, but also doesn't exist when the bidding is very competitive or the "value" isn't there. What we need to understand is, it's a seller's market. Have we won a true "bidding war" since NIL happened?

LOL he doesn't know, that's guesswork

These deals are not being reported by anyone

If he backed that up with literally anything verifiable, link it here so we can see it
Isn’t everyone guessing? Isn’t everything non reported publicly? We can hear toppin is earning 4M but nobody knows if that’s actually accurate.

I think if anyone outside of the program knows a number close to reality, Piper is as good a bet as anyone.

Could I interrupt the economics discussion long enough to ask if we have any news (or strong leans) to recruiting? Are there any players (good ones) we have on our radar?

Sadly Pru, the first tee time today isn’t until 9:40EST. I recommend a Masters history recap to get you by 😉

If everyone is overpaying, they aren’t overpaying
Not true. this is how bubbles form. NCAA men bball value is not yet determined IMHO. Beyond regular revenue streams (tickets, broadcast, merchandise) there is alumni/fan support. Likely Walmart, Mariott, FedEx, Oracle, Kroenke giving tons of money to Arkansas,BYU,Memphis,Michigan, and Missouri.

You make valid points and I do see that side of it. It does depend on the individual and their passions. I donate to charities expecting no direct ROI for myself.

My only counter to art is that I can resell it.

Ultimately, I don’t know what the answer is. I’m all for the players being compensated, but the dollar amounts seem to be getting insane and I don’t think a cap would stop anything. The only thing I can see happening outside of regulations to control it is that donors stop making as much money available. I don’t think any governing body can regulate it without it getting overturned in court.

So, I’m not going to stress about it and just see what happens

Dang this board is getting so hard with all the questions...I still haven't decided what athletic means.../s

This is my fan theory:

They are waiting on Sarr and………………Riley. Think about it. There is a mystery player out there that if he becomes available the staff is 100% confident they can get.

They still want a second string ball handler, maybe that kid from Cal State?

They also want another big but it’s hard to find a guy to come in and be the 5th/6th big.

Roster: Guards- KB, Davis, transfer, Sarr, Riley, 2 Frosh

Bigs- 2x Ivisic brothers, Mirokic, Ty
