If we’re asking about where does Illinois stand with Storr Illinois basketball is in trouble.. Unbelievable.

What is Michigan and Dusty May selling to players? I don’t believe Michigan’s NIL is better than Illinois. I wonder if ex players and ex assistant coaches are hating on Brad Underwood and Illinois.

Would Luke Hunger be a viable backup big? Would he accept that role like at Northwestern.
Has some beef to him and can hit a shot to keep some honesty in defending.
Thoughts?

There's literally no equation at all, because nobody knows. If other teams are happy paying $1.5M for two guys and then fill out the rest of their roster with $100k guys, then you're right, it makes it harder for us to get those $1.5M guys (who are then also being sold on a larger role on those other teams as well).
You keep saying nobody knows but then asserting that it’s clear we’re in the 20-40 range. I find it at least as reliable that a poll of active coaches had those coaches placing us in the top 10 nationally.

I never asserted that, I merely cited other folks who did so as to point out how there are many differing opinions on how much we're spending

If we are filling our wing spots with bargain players because we cannot afford guys like Ian Jackson, that does make me lean closer to us being farther back from the head of the pack, though

If we are top 10 NIL then why are we consistently outbid for every single player? I really hope you guys saying 'top 10 NIL' are correct, but right now common sense is telling me otherwise

EDIT: To clear up the 20-40 range, that came from an Illinois beat writer (myself, if I were forced to guess, I would say top 25ish... probably not all the way back in the 30s/40s but certainly nowhere near top 10)

I think people are confusing “outbid” with “making sensible purchasing choices.”

Last year we were in strong pursuit of three players: AJStorr, Dante Maddox and Egor Demin. Once their prices escalated to a certain point, Illinois excused itself from the bidding and looked elsewhere. As it turns out, none of those three players were worth what they were ultimately paid, with Demin being the best of the three but still not what he was billed to be. Illinois may have lost the bidding, but certainly made the better choice.

How will that play out this year? Who knows. But you have to have respect for the buyer who recognizes when the price tag is too inflated.

The fact we are discussing finances rather than just recruiting is depressing. Let's change the name.of the thread.
Morning wine?
This is a little emphasized byproduct of the NIL era. BU doing a bad job of recruiting/roster construction cuz we’re top 10 in NIL. No, we aren’t, more like top 25-40. I don’t really care where we rank in NIL. I just want to know who we’re going to bring in and then judge the roster when complete. If BU can’t put together a team that can compete in B1G and make a run in NCAAT with resources we have then we find someone else who can or Josh needs to get more resources. Arguing about how much NIL we have doesn’t change a thing.

There are things I don’t like about NIL and portal, but even sillier that arguing about how much NIL Illini have is arguing about how to fix the system or whether it should be fixed. As far as I know, no one on here is in the position to change or fix anything. Throw in the discussions about whether Riley (or other players) should stay in draft or not, and we have some boring recruiting threads. Man, we need some real news on potential new players. I can’t take it any more.

I agree with you- but there are no guarantees this year turns out like last year. Tomi and KJ were huge gets after striking out in the portal

But when guys we were targeted for a bench role and third guard are getting $1M offers to start other places, deciding to hold off and let some of the money flush out of the system makes some sense. I just don’t know if the money will ever run out. Last year there were desperate teams throwing a lot of money out at the end.

How about this for a pivot? Tyron Starks, the number one recruit in 2026, is rumored to reclassify. He is 6'7" and 245 pounds, and he plays like a point forward.

I think Storrs skil set and athleticism is being way underrated. The KU offense was a poor fit for him and built around Dickenson. If the price tag is right he would be a good fit in ours. If Tomi could lob to Kylan or Tre white then Storr could certainly fill that role our bigs can pass and spread the floor and we could use some athletes on D. . Plus he was 2nd team All Conference just 2 years ago. If the price is right I'd love to add him and have more $$ elsewhere to spend.

Sounds like a pretty easy guy to land.

I think much like rookies became the worst deal in the NFL at one time, Fr could become the worst deal in college basketball. They're going to demand huge money with no results to support it. You'll have your Cooper Flaggs who come in and are instantly stars, and you'll have your guys who come in and struggle. But either way it is going to cost crazy money to bring them in to find out.

Things should start to get moving soon. Focused on Sarr this weekend then they will move their attention back to the portal with some visits.
Thanks for the update. When you say "focused on Sarr," do you mean that the staff is in closing mode and is looking to get the whole thing wrapped up, committed, and signed while Sarr is in the states?
