I wouldn't worry too much about Baylor's offer. Miller cares deeply about the names on the jerseys if he comes home to Illinois. That's why he spent 2 years at a party school like Arizona State. He was preparing specifically for this year. We could offer him a bag of goldfish and he would care so deeply about those uniforms that he'll turn down the money at Baylor.
Illinois doesn't see Miller as a starter, were looking at him as maybe they get a 'hometown discount' for him to slot into the DGL/Harmon role and maybe compete for a starting role depending on who the other guy is

This is absolutely amazing to me. I know Miller is an exciting commodity around here at the moment. I do wonder how many of those people pumping him up now were the same people making fun of his struggles at LSU and ASU. I have said, I think he's a quality role player on a good team, but he is not a star.
If you look at his stats, over his career, they're not great. He's a good athlete, played good defense here, no idea if he's gotten lazy since. But he has one season shooting better than 34% from 3. He got worse after leaving Illinois, and then had a blow-up season last year. Am I to believe he figured out how to shoot now, or was last year an aberration like Damonte Williams random 55% 3pt season?
For a guy that doesn't rebound or provide assists, $1.5 m is an awful lot of money for a guy that is a 3 and D guy who may not actually be a great 3pt guy. To me, that would be a good example of how stupid college sports is getting. I thought Josh Dix getting $2 m, if that actually happened, was insane. But at least Dix has shot over 40% from 3, 3 out of 3 years.

Correct. Both of them shot around 42% at lower D1 level. I think it's probably safe to assume that Monsanto will have a dip in his shooting percentage moving up in competition like Ben did.

Plays good defense and is an EDG. Maybe Miller, Boswell, and Rodgers could teach defense to the rest of the team. Maybe he could teach them to shoot. Maybe ASU has a coach who could teach the Illini to shoot. They had 4 guys who played at least 25 MPG who shot better than any Illini from 3.

I'll go against the grain and say that I think staff is smart to be patient. I'm sure they are doing everything possible to bring guys in, but playing for value and having multiple options is absolutely necessary when you need 6-8 guys on the roster, plus another set of lesser players to compete for spots, practice, and have as insurance. If the market is a bit crazy when they go for their early options, stay strong. My bet is that they actually have a pretty long list with solid evals and different ways this can play out to a solid roster. They seem to understand you need at least one or two difference makers to have a chance at a FF type season, and are playing for that.
I imagine it's easier to shoot in the Big 12 where lots of teams don't play defense, and even easier to shoot when you're down double digits so the defense may or may not care quite as much if you hit a 3.

Heard we are giving miller a firm offer sometime in the next 24 hours, and if he doesn't take it, good luck. They aren't going to compromise not being able to get the big time guy/guys that they want to add.
The #1 defensive team in the country was in the Big 12 (according to KenPom), as well as #11 (Kansas), #13 (Iowa St.), and #15 (WVU). That's the same number of teams in the top 15 for DRtg as the Big 10 and SEC (4 each).
ASU also played some tough non-cons, including National Champions Florida, in a game where Miller scored 18 going 5-9 from the field (.556) and 3-5 from 3 (.600).
Well unfortunately with this way of thinking welcome to permanently being in 5-8 place range in the Big Ten . Losing in the BTT and getting eliminated in the first weekend of the NCAA tournament if we even make the tournament. I personally don’t think it’s a NIL issue. Illinois has plenty of NIL . Bret Bielema is cooking in recruiting on the Football side but players and assistant coaches love Bret and the Illinois football program. Many football players could have left this season for more NIL or the NFL but they chose to stay at Illinois. Shauna Green is cooking in Women’s basketball getting 5 star recruit, top transfer portal talent and McDonalds all Americans. Have you ever considered that just maybe it’s a Brad Underwood thing. Maybe players don’t want to play for Brad and Tyler Underwood and Hamer. if there is no Orlando connection with the player they’re not coming to Illinois

The offer will be more than generous for someone like Adam. Curious to see what happens here, if he goes elsewhere, they will find someone similar caliber for cheaper.
