Run/jump isn’t the main problem. It’s lateral feet quickness that can keep your man in front of you. Rodgers struggled mightily chasing guards when he played last. The only quick feet guy we have on the roster is Boswell. Playing man to man with guys that can’t move their feet is a recipe for disaster
It wasn't a problem for Rich McBride, especially his last year.

People are really sleeping on the type of season Tomi is about to have/how good our front court is going to be.
His passing with Ty's cutting is a mouth-watering combo.

is andrej better than dix?
Interesting question. Dix is super efficient, but Andrej is the more alpha-dog type scorer and better athlete.

We still don't have athletes on the break that really define the upside to a season. I'm sure we will be good in half court sets provided it's not short clock out of bounds.
As you probably know by now (sorry for the repetitions), I think that Kennard Davis Jr would be exactly that type of "athlete on the break" providing an upside to the Illini.

Or Stojakovic, an explosive guard wing... and a backup point guard.
Id be fine with that but I'm also not super worried about a backup point guard. I think Stojakovic, Ty, and two guard/wing additions could handle point guard duties to backup Kylan and I'm not even counting Tomi and Z who are good enough passers to run offenses through them.

I'm more worried about a lack of strength/physicality and explosiveness than I am a backup point guard to be honest.

Thanks for the response. Very good points. I agree that the players you name could handle point guard duties in those minutes when Kylan is resting, or maybe when he is in foul trouble. But I would not want any of those players starting at PG when Kylan is out with illness or injury. especially if Kylan is out for several games or weeks. ("Stuff" happens!)

I seem to recall Boswell chasing his man around screens a lot last year.

I think he's a better all around player, but it's close. Andrej is also younger. Dix is a better shooter, but I think Andrej's all around game/defense is better.
And God knows this group of Illini need some better defenders. That is why we need better athletes with quicker feet. We know Davis and Hummer can't stay in front of anyone....but they can make shots.

Now, get us someone who can make shots and stay in front of anyone!! (If he can get 8-10 boards too, pay him whatever!!)

I hope that you aren't blaming him. The blame lies elsewhere. #1 AD #2 HC #3 young kid defensive coordinator

I believe you are right! Last year Tomi was the key.

Are we getting to a time that even recruiting H.S. seniors be a thing of the past for this program. It seems all the effort and $$ is for portal transfers.

I like this kid. Only a Sophomore. 6'7", 200 pounds. More of a Combo Guard. Averaged 15.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game. Shot 37.4% on FGs, including 35.1% on 3-pointeers (3.0-8.4/game), and 80.5% on FTs. 25 games played, 25 games started for Elon.

There's another solid guard in the portal from Elon. He's TK Simpkins, a 6'4", 184-pound Junior. He averaged 16.4/3.1/2.6 per game, shooting 42.3% on FGs, 36.7% (2.1-5.9) on 3-pointers, and 75.6% on FTs. 27 games played, 24 games started.

I think Dorn might make the jump at Illinois and improve his percentage on 3-pointers. He has good length on defense, with hopefully the necessary athleticism, to become a good defender.

Agree ...

If Ace is getting 1 Mil, this portal thing is completely out of control. He would be a good backup for 1 Mil ? Crazy

He's getting over a million ... Oregon is involved now and was in to see him ... Gonzaga still involved ... Baylor has a strong offer out to him ...

Texas was involved but they are on the lower side in terms of their offer ... Right about where we are ...

Really wish Adam would just tell Irvin to shove it and make his own decision ...

1. Look at the stats you've posted more closely. In his last year at Texas Tech, TSJ shot 38% from 3 point range and 45.5% from the floor. He also had an even assist to turnover ratio. While at Cal, Andrej shot 31.8% from 3 and 42.7% from the floor.
You're comparing a 3rd year Shannon at Texas Tech to Andrej as a sophomore?

Re: your 2nd point on defense - Shannon was hands down a better defender at that point. But offensively, their stats are comparable
