Genuine question for you, since you've got an informed viewpoint. With all the hate towards Hamer on this board, for a casual observer, (if any of us on this board can be categorized as that) it seems like there's a disconnect between how many of our fans view of Hamer vs. Brad's view. I would like to assume that Brad knows more about Hamer and his capabilities and sees something in him. Given that Brad's own tenure here (notwithstanding the contraction extension) is tied to his success... why would he retain Hamer if he is as incompetent and inept as many on the board say? Brad is incentivized to win and I'm sure he has performance incentives in his contract. I know some think he's stubborn, but he's shown a willingness to adapt in other areas of his coaching. As such, I'm curious why that may not have happened [yet] in this case. Thanks.
I am not Indy and I am grateful of all he adds to this board. Reading between the lines the last few years I have noticed that all the insiders have their own opinions of Illinois basketball, coaches, players, and recruiting. It'd even been said that each 'insider' is privy to a different side of the program so their opinions differ. Indy has made it clear his opinion of Hamer and he's entitled to that. But it also needs to be brought up that some of the other well connected posters here have not shared the same opinion of Hamer or at least haven't been as vocal. Maybe I'm wrong, just something I have noticed.

I couldn't help but notice there's also stark differences in opinion on Tim Anderson...

But, as far as Hamer is concerned, it is clear that he was demoted with Crocker taking over the defense.

So are we not getting 2 of our biggest pieces to the roster? As in visas or admission process didn’t go well?

This should probably be the last year we go over season for the majority of our roster.

The gamble doesn’t appear to have the % of paying off.

Thoughts?

Valid question … I think the easiest answer lies in the fact that Brad hired 2 coaches to essentially take over all of Hamer’s responsibilities from previous years, and gave Hamer a different role …

I think Brad wanted to be loyal to his guys and give Hamer a shot and it didn’t go well … Needed to re evaluate, and Brad did in the off season just like he said he would and what I reported here …

As far as why Hamer isn’t gone completely … That’d be a great question for Brad but it goes back to loyalty I think … Tyler gets along with him … So I guess that’s something …

But the players think he’s a little weird and out there (leggings)His ability as a coach is the worst on our current staff and I understand it’s a good staff but still …

Brad demoted him and now other coaches who have more experience and proven results will take over and Hamer’s new role doesn’t have him focused on hardly any in game stuff … More so advanced scouting and video, planning the offseason stuff and helping out with recruiting and the portal … Which is fine …

But my goodness, stop sending him to freaking Chicago and having him reach out and talk to those kids … Might as well not even recruit Chicago if we’re going to send him up there …

Hopefully that answered your question …

Hammer gets paid $200k. Not clear what his role is now. If it is recruiting Chicago we have the wrong person and the wrong price. If it analytics position then make him an analyst and hire a replacement coach who can recruit or develop players.

If he was an "analyst" whatever that is, would he be making less? We have another guy who is the current video coordinator (Hamer's old position) who make over $100k and has less experience than Hamer. If you demote Hamer he's still going to make what he's making, and then you have to come up with whatever you want his replacement to cost, which is surely going to be way more than $200k (probably at least 3x more) if we want to get an ace recruiter type.

So yes, in a vacuum $200k is a lot of money for a guy of Hamer's age to be making. But for the program the relevant question is how much would Hamer's replacement make, and is it worth adding that to the budget just as we're about to enter revenue sharing. Hamer is very cheap compared to other ACs at this level. There are ACs on the women's side, where there is a lot less money to go around, that make the same or even more than him. I wouldn't be surprised if revenue sharing leads to more teams having 2 or 3 lower paid, younger ACs to try and bring down the overall cost of coaching staffs while still attracting 1-2 high level ACs with large salaries.

Also, how quickly we forget that Tim Anderson was paid $551,250 to "step away from Illinois basketball and take some time away from coaching in order to focus on himself and his family." And despite continuing to receive that paycheck for an entire season of not working, Anderson's star ILLINI recruit, Morez Johnson Jr. (with whom Coach Anderson had a very strong relationship) still went into the portal and eventually transferred to hated rival Michigan.
My point simply being that there are reasons as to why Brad may decide to keep or let go any of his assistant coaches that only he (and perhaps a couple of Loyalty insiders) really know about and money may or may not have had anything to do with it. But I agree that with revenue sharing, that may very well have to change.

From my research last Sept: Most power 5 assistants make 350-500k, with the distribution heavily weighted to the lower end. I found very, very few assistants earning 600k+ (a handful). By 550k you are in the elite tier (top 20). OA was the absolute top assistant salary I found. The next highest were the top Connecticut assistants at 750k and 800k (all inclusive - salary, bonuses, retention bonus). CT is winning national championships. I'm sure my search probably missed some things. Finding these numbers wasn't easy.

I doubt 550k is top 20. Wisconsin has 2 around that as does Purdue. UConn the two you mentioned, and I've actually seen higher numbers for them with Kimani Young at $1.1 million and Luke Murray at right around what Antigua makes. Indiana has a guy at $750k and another at $650k. Chin makes $700k at Arkansas and Kenny Payne makes $900k. That's already 10 guys from just 5 programs.

No, just being realistic. I would absolutely pay Kenny Payne $1.5 million a year to replace Hamer if it was someone else's money and there was an endless supply of it, but that's not the world we live in. All I'm saying is it may actually make sense to have a couple cheap ACs even if they're not the best, so you can afford to splurge on guys like OA. And I dont think it's realistic to expect the program to significantly increase the coaching salary outlay on the eve of revenue sharing.

I agree cannot see any reason why you would give him the area of Chicago to recruit. Smh

Is this supposed to be an exciting commit? Haven’t seen him and only looking at rankings but seems like a settle this early.
