I don't see anybody getting drafted next year, so that just leaves the portal!
Don't agree with that, but if no one goes pro you'll have a chance for a generational illini team. Bring back Stoj, Mihailo, and the twins (just the top 4) and you have basically what purdue has this year (plus the prospect of a solid incoming class which always happens here).

We now have one roster spot remaining for the 26-27 season.
does this include the walk on guys like Redd, Max Williams, etc? Because by my count that's only 12: Davis, brown, jakstys, Lee, Wagler, Mirkovic, Davis, Ty, Petrovic, Stoj, the twins. (Yes I know all those guys won't be back, just trying to understand the logic)

Boswell: gone. Tomislav Ivisic: probably gone. Humrichous: probably gone. AJ Redd: gone? Unhappy player(s): maybe gone? Just a start. Stojakovic could have a GREAT season and go to the NBA. Big Z could blossom and enter the Draft.

I think there is a decent chance Stojakovic could be that gamechanger and have an all American type season.

However, Im not overly high on this roster because I think it is drastically lacking speed/quickness to defend on the perimeter(especially so with Ty injured).

Also, I think you could argue the 2021 team was his best chance to reach the final four. Loyola was good but all you had to do was beat them then beat a bad Oregon State team to get matched up with a good Houston team but would've been very beatable and Kofi would have been a matchup nightmare for them.

I’m actually cool if your 13th or 14th guy is Ben Humrichous level.
I bet we are. Ben gets such a bad rap and was held to standards to be as good as Domask and that's a bit much. I expect Ben to make some on here eat crow. I would rather him be on the floor than Jake and clearly Brad did too. I feel Ben will shoot ut good next year as he seemed to improve. I'd be fine if the new Davis just gets as good as Jake Davis. If he is as.good as Ben in a couple seasons then awesome.

I hear this talk about Tomi to the NBA but I don't see it. He isn't that good yet. The most likely to be drafted to me is Pedja if he can improve his shot making with a better squad to draw guys off him.

You all fret way too much.

Given that we now have 15 scholarships and at best you play 10 of those during the season, you have to fill the end of roster with cost-effective players who have the potential to develop but at worst are good practice players. We’re no longer filling spots 14 and 15 with walkons who don’t get a scholarship. You can now pick and choose from players who are slightly above walkon caliber who have the potential to become more. You’re not limited to guys who just happen to be students at the university.

No doubt Brad will continues to fill spots 1-10 with the Ivisics, Boswells and Stojakavics of the world. Spots 11-13 will go to freshmen like Lee and Wagler who have real potential to be more or players like Jakstys who might redshirt to develop.
More or less a better chance of retention and save yourselves time on recruiting. Probably a red shirt candidate. That save you time for recruiting a player for at least year right there.

Currently Lee/Wagner are 9-10 on the roster. Really hoping one or both pan out this roster is thin without Ty.

It would, but next year we don't have any walk-on type guys still rostered, as this is Redd's last year.

the way I see it, aside from transfers or top 50 players, there's a 70% or better chance that all high school recruits will transfer.

Underwood has made it very clear, he has no concerns at all recruiting over you. I think these lowly rated guys are a waste of time. We are not going to skip on 4s because we're developing Landon Davis. He's going to be recruited over every year and either be content with earning a U of I degree and being able to say I was on the team or he transfers.

That's why, if I were in charge, I'd use these end of the bench spots on top instate players that aren't getting recruited to high majors. You can take a mid/low major offer, or you can come here, get your college paid for, get your degree, but you're essentially a glorified walkon. And maybe every once in a while you get lucky.

For example, if you look at Davis, you could say why not Hank Alvey last year from Illini Bluffs? 6'9" 240, I believe was a multiple time All State player, ended up going to Lehigh and actually had a nice Fr. year averaging 7 and 5. That's the type of player I'd try to fill the end of my bench with. Reward instate players.

Only reason I can think of is if the new NIL rules collapse the money players receive and make the second round financially competitive again.

I do agree with this - it is VERY rare that you return all of your top 4 players from a previous year top 25 team.

Not sure if some of you have heard yet, but we are the pre-season #12 ranked College Football team in the nation.

Kind of a big deal.

If hand wringing is your thing, just sayin’.

Reading the posts, it seems that many are assuming Davis is getting little to no NIL. And maybe they are right. I don’t know. But reading Indy’s posts, while he does not come right out and say how much, I get the feeling he is hinting that it might be a decent chunk o’ change. Certainly not in the range of the 1-8 or 9 top players on the roster, of course. And I suspect there is the fear that what he is getting paid could be just the amount needed to get a 4 or 5-star player, more or less. That is, there may be X number of dollars available for a 4 or 5-star player, which may not be quite enough, but adding what they are paying Davis might have gotten them there. Probably far-fetched, but that is kind of what I thought Indy may have hinted at.
