The period from 21-25 is a historical anomaly in terms of guys being able to play their 5th full season of college basketball, which is very difficult for freshmen to compete against.

Europe and the transfer portal will continue to push up the average age and experience level in the best teams too, but perhaps to a somewhat lesser degree.

This would all look very different if Jon Scheyer were a slightly better coach and Duke won it all last year, as they should have.
I think it’s statistically relevant. Successful teams in basketball (and football) are older. And then when there are freshman they are almost alway high end 5 stars.

The correct decision is for Illinois to bring in 2 high quality starters (assuming our 3 starters stay) and if a freshman ends up beating them out at some point then great but relying on a non 5 star freshman to start on a Final Four team is completely unnecessary and high risk.

Petro going to Whisky... He simply caught the wrong plane in the first place... The twins and Mirk are in though Z doesn't really like this Blackwell kid... Wags in some sort of limbo the kid hasn't stopped crying since Saturday... But in order for him to think about staying he wants Lee.... That means someone has to call Misko and let him know Toni Bilic gotta portal... You wanna talk Misko... No I've talked too much Misko... Q Coleman on line 2... Expletive... Just my imagination

Quit on the team and shouldn't be allowed back. I don't really care what nice things he may have said about us after he left.
I'm not worried though because he's not an actual option
Like Jordan, or was the baseball sojourn due to a shadow suspension?

This board is pure entertainment and I love every minute of it.

Just a few weeks ago the consensus was to blow up the whole roster. Build around Mirk and everyone else can walk.

We go 3-0 against Penn, VCU, and Iowa. A group of teams we should beat 8 times out of 10. And we split a pair of toss up games against Houston and UConn. All of a sudden we HAVE to have everyone return. If anyone leaves it's a disaster.
We lost to Wisc twice and honestly I was not sure why. Everyone was pissed. Now based on the tournament results we are a national top five team at the end of season. It's not too hard to see why we want to bring players back.

I'll just say if Illinois alums and donors truly want to win a national championship, they're gonna have to pony up some serious cash to compete with programs like Duke, UConn, Arizona, and Michigan (and probably Carolina if they get their butts in gear).

It sounds like Dusty is gonna land Juke Harris and has his eyes on a few portal studs to go w/ the really good frosh he's got coming in. Duke is about to land Blackwell and likely another stud or two unless something drastic happens. We all know Lloyd has been promised a crap ton of resources to keep their success rolling. In effect, you snooze, you lose. I'm cautiously optimistic that Brad and Co. will land a couple big pieces to tweak an already good roster, and they don't lose any core pieces from this season's team. *fingers and toes crossed*

Wonder what the reactions would be if the powers that be decided you get 3 years to play provided you maintain good academic standing. It used to be that way. You could still pay them (so it wouldn’t be a complete reversion to the old days).

Feel like we’re sleeping on Morillo a bit… kid is a stud and measured in at 6’7 210lb today 👀
He's going to carve out a role... Could be anywhere from the 1-4. That kid is pretty good at everything. The Ben replacement may already be in the fold... as long as we can keep him... As long as the portal is open, chaos rules...

I would be shocked if we didn't lose at least one guy we are hoping returns. It sucks, but that's college basketball these days. All these guys (or their agent) will be contacted by dozens of teams.
Agreed. It’s almost impossible to avoid. The great news is this staff has done a fantastic job of finding great fits following that inevitability.

There’s a better chance I play for Wisconsin
That would be awesome! I think sleeper cell players are the next untapped horizon in CBB.

Unfortunately, you probably wouldn't see the floor.

I'm a Dodgers fan, and we signed Jason Schmidt back in the day. He was a great starter for the Giants, then we signed him just in time for him to be expensive, injured, and terrible. I always wondered if he maintained his loyalty to the giants.

Maybe we can pay Petro 100k to suck it up for the badgers or Hawkeyes? At least in clutch situations, or against the illini.
