One of the next steps the program needs to take is to build a roster where everyone (or virtually everyone) getting minutes is without limits for the position they play.

Mihailo is short & limited on D. Ty doesn't have much of an offensive game. Ben can't create his own shot. Try hards if you will. Effort guys get you so far but to grab the brass ring it takes elite talent being on the floor 98% of the time. Not guys with holes in their game. Guys like that matter but can't be key pieces of the roster getting major minutes on a nightly basis. I hate how awful that sounds, but from what I've observed over the years it is factual.

I don't intend to bag on guys but IMO, thats the difference. And that difference shows up in the games against the elite programs (UConn, Michigan, etc). I like all of em & especially Ben showed massive improvement in defense & rebounding year 1 to year 2. But he's still limited.

This is the time of year to address that. It's not a major flaw as evidenced by the fact we made a final four with a few guys like that on the roster. But it is a factor to try to ascend the top step of the ladder.

The only way we have a chance to keep KW is pay him the same as a NBA 1st Round top 10 Pick. I seriously doubt we would fork over that kind of NIL money to a college player.
If you think the Illini can afford 4.5 mil for Blackwell but can't find 7.5 mil for Wagler -- you are very much mistaken.

You really don’t like the find you?
I think Blackwell is a great get if we do get him. But man, 4-5 million is a lot. That is 1/3 of our projected budget. Don't love that. Plus, with Ty leaving, we will need to get more money to fill his role. We really need a versatile 3/4 who can guard the big wings. Just less money for us to work with.

Wow. When will NBA players quit to come to the college league?
When the NCAA removes the barrier of NBA players (who have made it professionally) gaining or regaining eligibility...which is likely never (or if the court gets involved and overturns the precedent -- I think Amari Bailey has sued to be able to play in College again after 10 games in the NBA).

Those who have been stuck in G-League who potentially have eligibility have started returning to college ball.

That’s cool and all…but is that even possible? In roster building, I feel like you have to settle at times because of expense. Even in the NBA..

In college, Sarr had limitations, Tuggler, Fears..could go on. Maybe Michigan was close to no limited starters I guess.

I hope that never happens but am not 100% sure.
