Great points, but what I think Illinois might miss next year is someone who has no problem getting to the hole like KB. Yes, Wagler was able to get to the hole, but it was more methodical and got pounded on the way.Keaton was amazing. It's very likely none of our guards are as good as he was this year. However, I think the sum of them can be as good or better than the guard play this year.
Kylan cemented himself as a program legend, but we made a final four with him being borderline unplayable offensively the last bit of the season after he came back from injury.
I think most of us are disappointed because with how spread out our success as a program has been, next year is a once in a lifetime chance with what we have returning. We were hoping for proven pieces to complete the team, instead of hopes and prayers to get lucky with another late blooming star other programs missed on. Most of the time, the proven pieces will win out.I think Vaaks/Coleman/Morillo can be really damn good, yes.
This. I was very impressed by Morillo in the Nike games. Strong, tough, under control. Didn’t force anything, let the game come to him. Has some Dawg in him, OA connection, reminds me of a bigger Feiiz with better shot. Super excited to see him in the O & B next year! There's so many things that are wrong here, not sure where to start.
1) Look around the country. There are not going to be five teams with a better roster than Illinois. There are blue bloods with three to five players total on their roster as we stand with not much runway to add.
2) A lot of people in here said the team before the season started last year was not going to be very good or was super flawed. Illinois just returned 3 guys would would have been TOP FIVE portal players. They also just added a five star level freshman and maybe the best possible (top 15 transfer) portal guard fit for their system.
Quentin Coleman does not need to be as good or better than Wagler to have a better team than last year. Tomi (knock on wood) will be healthier. Mirk DID NOT EVEN GET AN OFFSEASON last year. Imagine what he is going to look like with another seven months working with Fletch. Andrej is likely to make a leap in year two.
Also, Lucas Morillo is getting massively overlooked here. They think Ethan Brown can contribute as well as a depth add. Depending on if Lee sticks around or they add a veteran guard to replace him, that's more depth than you had there this past season.
QC, Vaaks, Drej, Mirkovic, Tomislav, Jake, Big Z, Morillo, Lee (add if he goes), Brown.
That is one of the best rosters in the country next season and can win a title.
Sure, he could be and I hope he is. But far more often than not, Keaton being the exception, Freshman struggle on defense. I don't want to gamble what could be our best shot at a natty on a Freshman not named Wagler. We need proven production to rely on when Freshman hit the wall.Relax, this Coleman kid is going to be a special player.
Andrej gets to the hole pretty consistently. Coleman can as well.Great points, but what I think Illinois might miss next year is someone who has no problem getting to the hole like KB. Yes, Wagler was able to get to the hole, but it was more methodical and got pounded on the way.
I would just like another PG who has those skills to get to the hole without getting mauled, so he can dish for easy layups and score some baskets, too. There are going to be times when the offense gets stagnated, and when it does, a guy like KB can break it down. That's all.
I agree with your general point, but as of now, Vaaks is our PG, and he's not a freshman. Would be nice to add Cox to have another capable ball-handler, who also happens to be quick and athletic. If the staff doesn’t add a veteran guard, they are taking a huge risk. Talking about a national championship but having a freshman point guard. Literally has only happened once in modern basketball (and that player was a top 5 one and done stud). Add to that the other guard is a sophomore unproven at this level.
I’ll put it here first, if we rely on unproven players to be a top team and those players don’t perform highly then it’s on the coaching staff. It is an unnecessary and foreseeable risk. (This is coming from someone who has seen QC play in person 5 times in the last 3 months).
Might work out. Might not. Not worth the risk when we have this vetaran talent.
You could have posted this exact sentence a year ago about Wagler and Bam.
Fair enough. I just loved how KB can handle the ball effortlessly and whenever he wanted to get by his guy without a problem, he did.Andrej gets to the hole pretty consistently. Coleman can as well.
I dont think it is likely either but when healthy Wagler/Bam played a ton, probably 70 minutes or more. I would think Vaaks plays a ton like Wagler but AC/Morrilo combined to equal around the minutes Bam played. As a group they can do that in the 70 or so minutes those 3 play. Plus, we still may add a guard.Crazy that people are assuming Vaaks/Coleman going to average over 30 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists combined. Crazy. I’ll wager ANY amount that doesn’t happen.

We’ll be ranked higher in the pre-season polls than both Michigan and UConn were last year. Not sure I’d call a Final Four / Top 5 finish along with a pre-season top 5 squad second tier.I think most of us are disappointed because with how spread out our success as a program has been, next year is a once in a lifetime chance with what we have returning. Two years from now I'll be thrilled to keep our 20 wins and tournament run going with all the turnover. Was hoping all the chips were on the table and no stone left unturned this year. Tired of being in the 2nd tier when we have the ability to be in the first.
We will be cheering them on. Hope we won't be found wanting at the end of the year.
It's not a ridiculous take because we haven't seen what Vaaks + Coleman can do. If someone told you last year at this time that Wagler + Boswell was going to be better than KJ + Boswell you would have laughed them right of this forum and you would have turned out to have been wrong. We just don't know until we see it.No offense, but this is a ridiculous take. Wagler was an All-American and the best player on the team by a mile.
Vaaks + Coleman is a definite downgrade from Wagler + Boswell.
Having made a post supporting the same thing, I will say there are no guarantees of what kind of improvement comes year to year.I think you’re underestimating how much better players can jump year to year at this age and also comparing a finished product team in April with defined roles and development to now.
Keaton in October is not the same Keaton in April.
Look at Ben year 2 vs year 1

Kid shot 65%fg/50%3/90%FT last season, won the state championship & was Mr.Basketball in MO, and people are like, are we sure he’s good?Relax, this Coleman kid is going to be a special player.
I think that this freshman class is VERY special. The are the foundation for a great team in years to come if they stick together. Add a big or two next year and they may be world beaters.Relax, this Coleman kid is going to be a special player.
6’4” combo guard ranked in the top 30 nationally with both excellent shooting and athleticism and was the teams 5th leading scorer?Who was a McDonalds All-American and the exception not the rule.

How do they feel about how many minutes Blackwell will get for the Illini next season? Asking for... reasons.
