And that for me and our staff this afternoon … 🚩

Excited Lets Go GIF
Part of what made us great last year was that there were never jealousy issues in the locker room or any I gotta get mine mentalities. It's a fine line that Brad has to watch before he opens the door to they locker room.

A lot of people are obsessed with numbers, but if there's no fit....it just doesn't work. After watching what happened with Matthew Mayer, before and after.....I'm sure Brad knows personalities and what buttons to push. He and TJ should have NEVER have been on the same roster. Matt wanted his shots and took them, good or bad. The following year, TJ leads us to an Elite 8.

Blackwell has some certain people in his ear telling him how the role for him isn’t what he needs here … Too many mouths to feed … He wouldn’t be successful …

It has nothing to do with us “whiffing” or not having the money … He’d start … He’d get 30+ minutes a night and he’d get an absolute BAG …
He'd literally be the best player on a preseason #1 team .

At the end of the day, you're only as good as the people around you.

Putting this as nicely as possible …

Blackwell has some certain people in his ear telling him how the role for him isn’t what he needs here … Too many mouths to feed … He wouldn’t be successful …

It has nothing to do with us “whiffing” or not having the money … He’d start … He’d get 30+ minutes a night and he’d get an absolute BAG …

But some people who in my opinion don’t know ball think somehow he wouldn’t have the role he needs … Just what it is …

Vaaks will be the primary handler … Morillo and Coleman are going to play big roles …
This makes more sense since this will be the last year for Tomi, Z, Jake, and Drej.

I’m stoked at the prospect of a full summer for the old heads and new faces to get acquainted and work out the pecking order.

I hear you on this, but we’re not wanting to land Blackwell because it’ll make us preseason #1 per se. We want Blackwell so we can become borderline unstoppable, overwhelm teams with depth and talent, and intimidate everyone in our path lol. To kind of reach that Michigan tier from this last season. I don’t think we should avoid Blackwell to make sure we avoid preseason #1 lol.
Totally, not saying we needed to avoid #1. My point was, at least recently, pre-season rankings are not the end all be all of predictors for a national championship. At this point last year, we had no idea what we had in Keaton Wagler. I am happy we got most of the guys back that could come back. It raises our floor and blackwell would have raised our ceiling. There is something to be said for development and time for these guys to gel. I think the 2024 UConn team is what may be our trajectory in terms of continuity.

Blackwell left Wisconsin stating he wanted to compete for a championship. Well, Blackwell’s camp, you have to play with really high-usage, good players to do that. If that’s not the goal, stay at Wisconsin, Gard can make a guard pop.
This right here. If what he said is true about wanting to play for a championship you have to make sacrifices in order for that happen. It can’t be ‘I’m gonna get mine so I can get to the NBA’. It’s either that or go play for another team where you can average 20 a game but not on a team that has a chance to win big.

It is a good team. Not a stand out team. Relying on some luck with help and a lot of faith in Freshman. I get 1 but counting on 2, 3 or even 4 is a tall task. Hopefully they pick up a vet because Brandon looked unplayable last year. At the end of the day do I wish we went for the jugular sure, but Brad has earned my wait and see approach.

We have 5 key contributors returning from a Final Four team + one of the best transfer guards in the country. 2 highly-ranked plug and play freshmen coming in. Getting Blackwell or similar would be awesome but this is already a ‘standout team’.

I think we still need a strong back up big behind Mirk / Tomi in case of foul trouble. Seems like we only have Tomi and Mirk that can body other string bigs. Z doesn’t have the strength and jumps into the rafters on every pump fake. Any foul trouble up front and we seem weak. Are any of the freshmen able to fill this role?

This is a good question. Illinois has already spent around 15 million this offseason, which is easily top 10 in the country. If you saw what type of numbers teams were willing to pay Mirkovic, Tomi, and Drej, you would be floored. Illinois can afford Blackwell, but they are also confident in the incoming freshman/Vaaks (they spent a ton of Vaaks, Coleman, and Morillo) to fit in really well with your three to five. There's also very high optimism that Ethan Brown will make a impact right away.

Certain people in Blackwells camp did not want him to take the risk of going to Illinois, when Vaaks/Coleman/Drej are all potential breakout pieces and he would have been a secondary option (if those guys breakout).
If Blackwell’s camp doesn’t want him to have to play at his best to be the top scoring option and are afraid of competition then he want right for us from the first place. He would be our top scoring option right now, we would just have really good 2 through 7 scoring options too

It’s an odd reason not to come here - because we might be too good. Michigan got 9 guys to go there last year and all of their bench could have started somewhere else, Yaxel could have scored more on a different team. We have to get guys willing to sacrifice their stats a bit for skills growth and winning. Everyone else that has come back has shown they are willing to do that so maybe Blackwell isn’t a fit afterall

His agent has every right to question that. I would. He's got one year left to impress the NBA scouts and there are already a lot of guys on this roster who are trying to do the same. There's only one ball.

Also, I'm guessing Drej's agent was having very similar concerns.
No one is blaming the agent. It's the posters who automatically assumed Illinois wouldn't pony up for Blackwell that are the issue.

We sure this isn't the ol car dealer tactic where you suddenly change course and are "no longer interested" in the product, forcing them to make a choice quickly?
Wishful thinking is all I guess. Would have loved to have landed Blackwell but understand not everything is in our control.

Yeah, I'm not upset with anyone about losing out on Blackwell, especially if that's the reason (not the right fit anyway). But if we thought we wanted/needed him, I'm surprised there isn't/won't be someone else who could make us better- even a defensive piece or extra insurance in case of injury/underperformance.

Yes, we have a stacked roster and #TheRetention is something to celebrate. I don't care about pre-season media rankings, though pre-season odds are interesting and they have us around #3-7 and a definite step down from UM and Duke. Those are of course wild predictions, but it isn't crazy to wonder if a little extra could end up being the difference that gets us a natty.

Those of us watching the Jordan Game, Quentin with a filthy move, lay-up. The doom squad is going to be really disappointed how good this kid is.
I agree - he's really good. And I'm not worried at all about starting a freshman. Brad's teams have featured standout freshman almost every year -- two this past year in Keaton and Mirk.
