Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread

Their roster isn't that good.

They were a bubble team most of the season and lost their 2 best players plus another starter.

USC has 8 top 100 players, does that make them better than us? Or UCLA? Michigan has 8 until Aday or Johnson declares. Are you really worried about Xavier Booker because hes a top 100 player? High school rankings don't mean much. UCLA's best bet is the BIG is weak, because they're worse than last year. They'll be lucky to open in the top 25.

RSCI has always correlated to winning, let’s not be silly here.

Splitting hairs between good and very good is fine, but on paper (which is all we have to go on at the moment) this team is probably the 4th best in the B1G. So probably right in that range of good —> very good.

Can that change prior to November? Sure.

UCLA or USC?

Both of them are kind of at the crossroads with their coaches where it could kinda go either way, a death spiral possible in both cases.

Painter will finish ahead of both regardless, just you watch.

They’re both going to be in that “good to very good” range imo. USC has a lot of youth in the frontcourt this year and needs to fill their roster out still.

Unrelated, but I noticed Michigan St lost Ugochukwu to the portal. Was going to play a huge role for them this year.

— The day Andrej announced his return, we fell out of the running for Blackwell. Two days later, Coleman signed. That points to Brad needing to make a decision: keep both Andrej and Coleman and pass on Blackwell or lose one or possibly even both by continuing to pursue Blackwell.

I got to admit, after hearing the Blackwell to Illinois smoke a bit ago, I got a little greedy and thought we could be a true collegiate super team like Michigan last year.

Naturally when the tide turned and he would be going elsewhere, I was disappointed and worried about the back court a bit from a ball handling and defensive perspective.

After the final stages of grieving, I've come to my senses and realized we are still in a great position with some talented, young, backcourt pieces and am back on the hype train.

I do wish we still had a more laterally quick, ball handler that is proven (maybe coleman will be that guy) and that's why I wanted either of Lee or Ty to stick.

Either way, I'm back to my senses and ready for a great year next year.

If we want a back-up PG, why wouldn't we just hold on to Petro?

He'd have a full off-season to level up his D, he can clearly handle the ball and pass, and looked like he had a decent shot from his film.
Well… it wasn’t just Brad’s decision. Pretty sure Petro didn’t appreciate being the “serviceable 9th guy.”

If you watched him play during the few minutes he got, it's pretty easy to see why. Petro doesn't have the mentality for ball at the B1G level.

Is there any news on any of the Illini in the portal? Is it possible that one or more of them won't have a team next year?
