I got to admit, after hearing the Blackwell to Illinois smoke a bit ago, I got a little greedy and thought we could be a true collegiate super team like Michigan last year.

Naturally when the tide turned and he would be going elsewhere, I was disappointed and worried about the back court a bit from a ball handling and defensive perspective.

After the final stages of grieving, I've come to my senses and realized we are still in a great position with some talented, young, backcourt pieces and am back on the hype train.

I do wish we still had a more laterally quick, ball handler that is proven (maybe coleman will be that guy) and that's why I wanted either of Lee or Ty to stick.

Either way, I'm back to my senses and ready for a great year next year.

If we want a back-up PG, why wouldn't we just hold on to Petro?

He'd have a full off-season to level up his D, he can clearly handle the ball and pass, and looked like he had a decent shot from his film.
Well… it wasn’t just Brad’s decision. Pretty sure Petro didn’t appreciate being the “serviceable 9th guy.”

Is there any news on any of the Illini in the portal? Is it possible that one or more of them won't have a team next year?

If you watched him play during the few minutes he got, it's pretty easy to see why. Petro doesn't have the mentality for ball at the B1G level.
Yes, I watched him all of his minutes. If you watched any of his tape, you'd easily see why we took him in the first place.

Mentality...hmmmm...60% of this board still dreams of Curbelo 😜

For all of you in the know, I have a three-part question:

1. Since Coleman and Brown were both playing in Missouri, did they play at the same class level?
2. Did they ever play against each other?
3. Did they play any common teams and if so, how did their stats compare?
I can answer this one.

1. I don’t know
2. Not sure, maybe someone else knows?
3. I have no idea

My money is on Kentucky or a team where he’ll get a lot of usage. Not sure if he’d want to come here and fight for a spot against a bunch of guys who were retained.

I know someone who might take on the role we have room for though (not an insider, just vibes)

Wanted to add - Morillo appears far more likely/ready to contribute than does Ethan Brown. Assessment just from watching some of this game: Brown's team was WAY overmatched. They needed him to be way more assertive for this to be even moderately competitive. Just wasn't that guy on this night.
That said, I do like the way he sees the game - has some true point guard tendencies. Made a lot of passes that I'd guess typically work but against this level of comp (Principia starts exclusively D-1 caliber players), they do not. It will take him a bit to adjust to the speed of the college game. Reminds me of Nico Moretti but with better size. Didn't pay attention to his defense, but he was not guarding QC. Not that it mattered because Principia could pick on any of the other defenders on the court and score at will.
Morillo, on the other hand.... when I picture him, I think of a lanky freshman Will Riley-type build. This is not the case at all; he more closely resembles Virgil van Dijk (google him if unfamiliar). Fletch will have him READY for the B1G from day one. Does not whatsoever look out of place against elite competition. Just a different tier of basketball player and that is not an indictment of Brown (or Landon Davis or Zens).

I just don’t understand why people keep throwing shade on MP. And so, I keep dragging out the following.
I think he made a bad first impression in the first one or two games in the non-conference schedule, and that has stuck with a lot of people. You know what they say about bad first impressions. Sure, he has had some rough minutes, but I think that has more to do with just not getting enough practice time with the team and not getting enough minutes on the court in actual games. I suspect the first game or two, he was nervous and wanted to make a good impression, and just tried too hard.
If KW had gone to Minnesota or anywhere else, MP would have been the Illinois PG, and I think he would have been a good one. I see him as “good” Curbello. A pure PG. It seems people forget a couple (or a few) games where he played really well that people, even sports writers via twitter, got excited. For instance, after the UTRGV game (I think, it’s been a while):

Dariush Takhtehchian, M.D
@takhtehchianmd
22-year-old Mihailo Petrovic. As advertised. Already has 12 pts, 3 dimes, 2 boards in 12 minutes

Someone here posted, "I need more Mihailo."

And another: I'll go out on a limb here and say we got a good one in Petrovic.
Really good, really quick.

And there were a few other similar posts.

And if I remember correctly, he played well against Southern U. It wasn’t just at garbage time. I think it was in the first half. MP took over the PG duties, and KW played wing. Worked pretty well, but then, Southern was not much competition. The point is, he has played well when he gets significant minutes.

And even Underwood praised him after a game. I forgot which. I remember because it was so surprising.

And finally, he was a pretty good player on the European team in the European league he was in. I forgot the details, but I think he was considered a top PG in that league, and I also think that league is considered a good professional level league. And do you think the staff didn’t see that? I have no doubt he could play in the Big Ten.

They will all play.

Petrovic and Bilic may choose to go back to Europe, if they don't get the NIL they are looking for, but they will certainly find a soft place to land.

Lee and Ty will have no shortage of suitors. They could start for a whole lot of teams... That's why they left.
