This is 100% just a gut feeling on my part, but I wonder if the player we add later winds up being Ty Rogers?

I can’t imagine there is another P5 willing to offer him a bigger role and more pay than we would be. And while I don’t know for certain my impression is that we could probably offer him more to be our 9th/10th guy (with a chance to earn a bigger role) than he could get as a starter at a mid major.
pretty sure the portal is going to get active tho once draft combine completes and the 5 in 5 stuff settles in.... there's still money to be made and playing time out there for Rodgers. But I, for one, would be stoked to see him back in an orange script this fall, historical shortcomings and all. We will have a ton of pretty reliable shooting, but Ty can apply some rim pressure and movement. Kylan did that at times last year as well, when needed. There are going to be times in the season that we have to win in different ways, Ty adds the potential of some "different ways".

Lowell Hamilton was #1 in the country.
Often quoted but quite misleading. He was rated #1 by one publication (Streeet & Smith) after his Junior year of H.S. By the time he finished his SR year of H.S., he had dropped quite a bit (to around the teens which is still very high). In the state of IL alone, Ed Horton was ranked ahead of him (Ben Wilson would have been had he not been murdered).

Liberty OTOH was rated #1 by a few publications when his finished H.S.

What matters to the school getting you is your ranking when you finish play H.S. If you want to cherry pick rankings, Rich McBride was ranked #2 after his FR year of H.S. by one publication (Lebron was #1).

That was the one that pissed off Booby Knight. He was used to getting any Illinois player he wanted.

I don't believe Kendall was highly rated. Bardo, Anderson and Larry Smith were all ranked higher
High enough that he chose us over a blue blood Knight led IU.

As an aside, Rich McBride was rated #1 in his class in like 8th grade or freshman year. He was fully grown by basically freshman year of high school so had a physical advantage. As he got older he started having some injury troubles that took away some of his pop by the time he got to Illinois. Still a good player but not a top prospect.

Lowell had such a smooth jump shot. He was a true undersized post player at 6'-7", but probably 6'-5". His long arms and high release allowed him to thrive against taller players. Very similar to Deon Thomas.

Gill was not as highly regarded out of high school as Anderson or Liberty.

Liberty was regarded by many the #1 player in his class, or #2 for others behind Dennis Scott, as I recall.
Liberty was # 1
