Significant role? A 9th man isn't a significant role.
Well we’re gonna have to find that 9th man somewhere.
Also, the staff felt like at least one of Zens/Brown will be an upgrade over Lee.
IMO that’s a gamble. Both guys are ranked much lower than where Lee was ranked.

Counting on either to come in and be a functioning role player will hurt if it doesn’t pay off. Ideally you’d want your 9th man capable of playing a 5-10min role.

Keaton was ranked much lower than Lee. I'm not say either will be remotely as good as Keaton. Just that rankings don't mean as much as many think, especially when you get past the top 20 or so guys. People latch on to the rankings like they are gospel and they clearly aren't.

FWIW I've love to add another guy if it's a good fit. Another capable ball-handler and/or a tough rebounding PF would be nice. But it's going to be hard to convince someone to join knowing they're our 8 or 9 guy in the rotation.

I hope there is a nice surprise coming after the draft stuff(more than just Stojakovic returning) because I'm confused why both of Ty and Lee transferred with the current roster composition.

Currently have:

Vaaks
Coleman(freshman)
Stojakovic
Mirkovic
Tomislav
Zvonimir
Jake Davis
Morillo(freshman)

Jakstys
Zens(freshman)
Brown(freshman)
Landon Davis

I don't see why one of Ty or Lee couldn't have played a significant role on a team with title aspirations with that outlook.

I'm hoping there is a #theaddition(outside of Vaaks) to go alongside the retention. Right now, basically just running it back with Coleman and Vaaks in place of Wagler and Boswell. Which don't get me wrong that is a great place to be, but I still think the goal should be a title and beating the likes of the Duke, UConn, and Florida's of the world. Another guard would probably help a ton especially one with defensive versatility.

Supposedly there was the money to add Blackwell to this group so it should be there to add another piece.
Do you think maybe Ty or Lee wanted more a more significant role?
This isnt a fantasy team.

What we want is great and I'm sure they both appreciate the fans for caring. That said, they want to start, play 30+ minutes and be major contributors, not play specific roles. With us, Ty would have been a guy who played a very specific role, but he wouldn't start or wouldn't finish a game.

With Boise State, I'm sure he'll get to do both. I'm sure he had his option to stay, at a price with a specific role.

I think Ty could have easily been in line for first perimeter player off the bench over Morillo or Davis.

He stuck around last season for a similar role if you expected Petrovic, Boswell, and Stojakovic to start preseason.

I get wanting to play but Ty seems like a guy that wants to win and I think being a good role player on a final four team might be more fun than playing for Boise State.

Keep in mind this kid started as a sophomore on an elite 8 team and has been around for 2 more years.

Ty needed to use this year (and next year, if 5 for 5 is finalized) to maximize his earning potential. He wasn’t going to get the amount of money for the role he would be expected to play at Illinois. He needed to get his bag now.

Brad: Offers Ty a complimentary role off the bench.
Ty: Chooses to decline in favor of a starting role.

He made his choice. He wanted a larger role and transferred to get it.

I know Ty is coming off a patellar tendon injury which can be a career killer but I don't see why he couldn't have earned a role ahead of Morillo or Davis if he came back healthy.

Morillo is a promising recruit but has a pretty similar ranking that Ty did when he was entering college(50ish) and Ty has 4 years of development and practice at a major program.

As for Davis, Ty is a way way better defender and rebounder. Obviously can't shoot but on the flip side provides a versatile perimeter defender that is also an elite rebounder on both ends.

Obviously all depends on how healthy he is and if he recovered but it definitely seems like he could have competed to be the first guard off the bench or even start of Coleman struggles with the transition. I doubt Ty got that big of a payday from Boise State.
I really like Ty, he can do things that are really big in terms of helping a team win basketball games, but it would be crazy for the staff to tell a top 50 kid that they love and think is going to be really good to sit on the bench for someone who hasn't been healthy or played basketball in over two years coming off a major injury (which his biggest skill set was reliant on his athletic ability).
