Grew up in DC but with multiple generations of Illinois alums on my Dad's side (including my grandfather who had 3 degrees from Illinois, was a professor for decades, and even sat on the athletic board of directors for a number of years). With that history I was destined to follow the family tradition, graduated from U of I, and just never left Champaign.

Grew up in Springfield and moved to Chapel Hill while my wife went to grad school at UNC. We went to a lot of games and of course became a fan except for the one game in 2005. I love the Illini but hate the state of Illinois and dread going back to visit family so I consider myself a tar heel but wear my Illini gear proudly.

Most Texans (if they are really Texans) will tell you none of the above. They want their own category, and even then, Sacriag is correct, parts of the state have more roots/invaders related to different parts of the "States". East Texas: Sort of Southern, Tenn. North Texas Midwestern, South Texas: LA and some of the Gulf Coast. But can promise, the multi-gen group, just Texan.

In 1968, I think (during the celebration of the sesquicentennial), the Illinois Dept of Tourism came up with a commercial that featured a song called: Just outside of Chicago, there's a place called Illinois Yeah, it's always been referred as Chicago and downstate. Of course, downstate included Waukegan and Rockford.

Southern Illinois. How Southern? If there weren't Hills in the way... I could see KY. Southern Illinois should be defined as I-64 south. True southern Illinois must have Shawnee National forest property in the county.

omg, thank you! Now why in the he!! did that dude follow and record all that way and not follow through to the end?!?!?!? I would have followed to their destination and then offered to help carry it into the house! Maybe even buy them a 6 pack for their effort, lol.

Grew up in Champaign and UofI alum of course. Then spent 20 years in the Air Force in ND, CA, MT, and now in Bellevue, NE. Still working for the military and proudly hang my Chief Illini Flag in the office. Still have family back home and get to games in Lincoln when IL visits and back home when I can.

Only a long time lurker here... grew up downstate (Effingham/T-Town/Dieterich area) did the "Chicago job after college" song and dance and left for the Florida beaches asap.

Grew up in Springfield and was on freshman team in 1967 when Springfield HS went to the state basketball tournament and finished in 3rd place due to our starting center, Dave Robisch (went to Kansas and had a good NBA career). He held the tournament record back then scoring 39 points or more in 3 out of the final 4 games (scored 25 in the other). We lost to Pekin and Fred miller who went on to play for the Illini. That experience at Assembly Hall (even though I was sitting behind the bench) convinced me to go to U of I.

I graduated and moved to LA and received graduate degree there. Moved to AZ in 1979 and have been here ever since.
