The Notre Dame series replaces Missouri on Illinois' 2027 and 2028 schedules.

In addition to the Notre Dame game, Illinois has added FIU to the schedule on Aug. 28, 2027. The Illini will no longer play Eastern Illinois in 2027.

2027 Illinois Football Opponents
2027 Home Games: FIU (Aug. 28), Delaware (Sept. 11), Indiana, Northwestern, Penn State, UCLA, Wisconsin
2027 Road Games: at Notre Dame (Sept. 4), at Michigan, at Minnesota, at Purdue, at USC

(a) This is scheduling that will absolutely fire up the local, Chicago, and fan interest
(b) This is a sub-optimal play for maximizing wins
(c) This is doing Purdue a favor to allow them to get out of their future games with Notre Dame and schedule patsies
(d) Assuming this means the '27 and '28 Missouri games are not happening?

Werner confirming this is dropping two games from the Missouri series. That softens the blow (but I would rather play Missouri for a few reasons).

Notre Dame's announcement has the specific dates:

2027:
8/28 - FIU (home)
9/4 - Notre Dame (road)
9/11 - Delaware (home)
Big Ten Schedule (TBD)

2028:
9/2 - Notre Dame (home)
9/9 - Illinois State (home)
Ohio is listed as TBD but I'm assuming that will be 8/26?

Are bowl games fun? Is making the 24 team playoff fun? Because playing both would make either of those less likely.
I’m genuinely answering as a fan only, but it depends on the bowl game. The ones in early December featuring 5-7 teams shouldn’t even exist, and my excitement for those (even with Illinois) is very low. I personally love the exposure of a series like this.

Who knows? Maybe the idea of knocking off Notre Dame is so enticing to a few donors that they really pony up for next year’s roster!!

If we could increase football NIL by $10M-$15M, I'd feel better about this agreement.
Praying the boys finish strong, steal a couple upsets down the stretch, and the big money donors finally recognize the coaching masterclass Bret/Barry/Roger have been putting on. Back up the Brinks truck for a stud DC, keep Cooper in Champaign, and open the NIL floodgates.
Give this staff some REAL ammunition and let's see what they can build
