Indiana 103, Illinois 69 POSTGAME

Firing Groce mid-year is a huge mistake. Let him finish it out and hopefully turn things around a bit, show some improvement. If not, give the keys to someone else.

We're not going to make the tournament this year anyway and none of our assistants are going to be able to right the ship. Just ride it out.

I get what your saying but I wasn't talking about Tracy , a respectable pg in shooting and keeping the defense honest and good D bottom line is we're missing the ones that spurned us while they are so.e where else knocking of KU , Pitt and other teams.

Oh yeah definitely, there's a serious talent gap at our 1 and 5 spots. Unfortunately for Groce i dont think he's got the guys coming in next year, (including Leron and Tracy) to really save his job. He's gonna have to pull a miracle out of his rear end on the recruiting trail if he wants to be successful next year.

Groce on radio (paraphrased):

Out of character early due to their hot 3 point shooting. Some guys hitting that usually don't. Resorted to hero ball.

Guys not disciplined, abandoned team ball when IU made a run. Particularly the young guys.

Atrocious defensively ... about as bad defensively as all this year.

IU difficult to defend but guys not tough enough, selfish defensively (not committed to team defense).

Off the ball defense was poor and had lack of vision as to what was happening on the court. Too much ball watching.

Nunn struggling defensively. Foul problems impacted him.

Mentioned that he was please with Thorne's return performance.

I agree with this just for the fact that if he was fired one of his assistants would get the head job for the rest of the season and not one of them should be coaching let alone be the head coach in the BIG. Mike Thomas made a real mess of our athletic department. He went with what he knew hiring mid level MAC coaches and both destroyed programs. Everyone knew Weber had to go but I have no idea what Groce did to deserve a BIG job.

It's definitely the coaching...... and the talent, the coaches recruited. Injuries yes, but it wouldn't matter much, as the basic basketball fundamentals aren't there, or are they being taught.

1. Indiana covered the spread.

2. Other than a brief surge in the first half to close the gap to one point, this was a pretty sad effort by the Illini. IU is a pretty good team, but we made them look like world beaters. Oh well.

3. Malcolm Hill had a decent stat line, but it was pretty much spitting into a hurricane.

4. Kendrick Nunn did not have a stellar performance. Fouling out was an appropriate way for hm to exit this game.

5. Mike Thorne played pretty well everything considered, not that it made much difference. The part where Max B. just blew by him for an easy basket makes me wonder how much he will help. I guess I am disappointed that we won't have him next year, but presumably this is what he wanted.

6. Indiana is a good team, and a great offensive team, but our defense just isn't much good at all.

7. Either our players are not listening to the coaches on defense (probably this) or we have a grim lack of talent on defense. This is the most disappointing part for me.

8. Since it is now official that Thorne will not be back next season, who the heck is going to play center for us? I guess we need to find another transfer.

9. On to Minny! Maybe they are a B1G team we can compete with. It sure isn't Indiana.

There's more to it for the defensive train wreck, but I agree with Groce's observation of too much ball watching. Same thing tonight as in the Nebby game. Standing around looking at the ball like a bunch of 5 year olds just starting out in soccer. Totally unaware of where opponents are off the ball.

There's been games even in the last few years that were on par with this (Michigan senior day 2014, Nebraska 2013, Wisconsin 2013) but this isn't pretty. I think there's a confidence and leadership issue on the team where things start going downhill and it avalanches out of control.

But I do think there will be hell to pay if we lay an egg to Minnesota.

Leadership starts with the Head Coach and I think leadership has been lacking from him since he got the job!

Anyone watching Northwestern battle Maryland. What is so hard about playing hard nosed defense and having some structure to your offense? If NW can do it with lesser athletes what is the problem?
