Well, during this game I polished off a bottle of Jameson, Luksusowa, and am now on a second bottle of Jameson (no, the first 2 weren't full, lol) these kids are driving me crazy!! I love 'em, I see the potential, I'm excited for the coming years, but mannnn,.....

Trying to remain positive here:

Looked great for the first 18:00 minutes of the game. Literally ran out of gas from that point going forward, hence all of the fouls/etc. Gotta wonder how much the flu that's ran through the team had to do with that tonight.

How many B10 quality starters are on Iowa right now?

Iowa is far worse than Illinois this season. We blew a 20 point lead at home to the worst team in the B10 conference. I don't care how big the rebuild is. You HAVE to win this game. This was a colossal failure and every in the program shares some of the blame. It starts with Underwood.

Yeah they're both bad - please realize that no team in the B1G is "far worse" than Illinois. Illinois is bad. That's why it went to OT. It's why Illinois was up 20 and then lost. Two bad teams playing each other are both bad.

Iowa HAD to win this game too. Every team wants to win. Illinois easily could have won this game, probably should have, but there's a bunch of freshman and a bunch of guys who fouled out. It sucks. Underwood probably deserves some blame, but ultimately, it just sucks.

No more Finke. He can’t defend, he can’t rebound, he doesn’t t have a post game, and now he can’t shoot at all either
I am all aboard the Ebo train. Start Ebo over Finke. Build for the future. If Finke wants to play himself back into the lineup, then by all means he's welcome to.

Another game of playing 1 half and not adapting to coaching changes. The zone hurt with our reversal of passing.

The shooting improved as the defense got weaker....Iowa can shoot, they didn't in the first half against our pressure, that wasn't there in the 2nd half.

Frazier is the real Mr. Basketball and that will not change for us moving forward. This kid is a star in the making and the exuberance to be the leader as a freshman. Get him over his freshman mistakes and see where he will lead us.

To many games lost by less than 10...we are closer now than we have been in the last 10 years...get two stud wings with Ayo or 1 and a B1G and let next season get here already!

The good news, I don't feel any need to invest any more this year. Will really free up some meaningful time! I really am having a hard time imagining that we can get results this bad. But, you are what your record says you are.

They're not though. We hope and think they will be, but right now they're not. The most important thing for the program right now is Underwood locking down a 5th year and a juco transfer. Next year is gonna be a very long season too.

Let's see how we look 8 weeks from now before we make any predictions on next season.

I don't care if you guys think i'm whinning just to whine. Brad NEEDS to say something about the officiating. Everything that can be done to hurt us has been done.

IDK, I can't lay this on the refs. During the game, when the fouls were being called I didn't feel like we were being singled out. I just think we needed to play better D. This loss is squarely on our lack of Defense for the entire game. We sucked at D from start to finish. Alstork's D I have no problem with, everyone else???? we sucked.....

Iowa roster definitely has a higher basketball IQ than we do

here's a sad one - March 1st, 2017. Anyone know the relevance of that date?

It was the last time we won a conference game in either basketball or football. Approaching a year.

It's sad. Frustrating, and I want to throw in the towel. But at the end of the day, I'm still gonna root for them. I'm still gonna watch the games I can. I'm still going to support the players. Why? Because (for the most part) the effort is there, on both the player and coaching fronts (along with the AD front). Plus - it's my school, and it'll always be my alma mater. I've never lived long enough in a single city to really have a pro sports team to call "my own". This is it, and I'm all-in, folks. You keep giving the effort- good time or bad - and I'll support you (and take all the weird looks and smirks from friends of other big ten schools, and even other Illini alums that wonder why).

Self reflective rant over. Night folks! GO ILLINI! :illinois:

I take solace in this. We last started 0-5 in the Big Ten in 1998-99. That was Frank Williams, Robert Archibald, Lucas Johnson and Damir Krupalija's freshman year. That painful year laid the groundwork for the greatest 6-7 year run in Illini Basketball history.

I believe we are about to see history repeat itself with Frazier, Smith, Williams, and Ebo.

Agreed, but it will depend on WHOM is our next Arch/Damir etc starting next year.

I really think the 2 JUCO wings should be looked at, get both Trice/Taylor and play immediately! With Ayo and this experience, albeit painful, next year could even be special!

I'm going to try to be positive (mostly for my health :D)
-Frazier is a superstar in the making
-Ebo has improved more than any player on the team (maybe minus Trent) and looks like he has a great feel for the game.
-Williams and Smith play like freshman but both have the makings of being good 2nd year players and maybe great junior/seniors.
-Black is a very good player but needs to foul less
That's all I've got for now.

Finke wasn’t the reason we lost this game imo. And he wasn’t in there most of the times we couldn’t get a rebound.

Not today they aren't. I'm amazed that people can't see that.

They are, and I’m amazed it is even being argued. I don’t know what to tell you guys if you can’t see the drastic difference in our offensive approach to games. Losing sucks, obviously, but it sucks the most when you’re down 25 at the half because your gameplan is “Hope Malcolm make shots and everyone else shoot a high percentage on their long twos”

With Groce it was bad because we were losing and doing so with the worst coaching staff in the conference. Even though we are still losing, the latter is no longer true. That’s an improvement.

This is completely unacceptable. How can a coach not draw up plays against a 1-3-1? This is like watching John Groce coach. Oh my gosh, they just changed defense; guess we should just pass around the perimeter before chucking up a contested 3

This! Maybe someone can explain why we kept doing the same perimeter pass around expecting different results?

That aside, someone mentioned if Groce had made it another year we would have had Tilmon. From how I read things, IL was Tilmons Moms choice, not his. Guessing he still would have cut loose to MO when they hired Martin & brought his good friend Porter on board over there.

If these guys played with half the heart of Trent Frazier, we'd be in great shape.

Shame he didn't get the win.

Correct. And this is a big, big part of it. This team doesn't have the intangibles yet. I don't want to just keep blaming everything on previous coaching regimes, but this was a big problem with Groce. I don't feel like he taught the game very well. Moms loved him, he got a lot of silver medals in recruiting, and he won our last tourney game, but that's about it.

We have Groce guys, freshmen, and Alstork.

16 more possessions/shot attempts than Iowa and out rebounded by nearly double. I would say those might contribute to the loss for us. You can blame refs all you want, but when you shoot that many 3's, and then get tired, well the result can be expected.

I mean from a bright side only standpoint:

1. get Trent some wins, and his jersey goes in the rafters. what a special player. He's gonna have a disgusting highlight reel if he stays all four years.
2. ???

We gave up 104 points to Iowa and took the L. This team is just not good which is the first time I've said that this year. We are literally the worst team in the Big Ten.

Thank you! I said this in the game thread because everyone from the refs to Josh Whitman to even Stephen Bardo was getting called out. They didn't give up 104 to Iowa and neither did coach Underwood. It was this team and they really need to take a hard look at themselves after this debacle. And stop with the inexperienced excuses. It's not inexperience when you make lazy passes, stupid fouls and forget to guard your man.

Let's be real, if Tilmon was here Groce wouldn't have given him significant playing time till the end of January
