Simply can't win only scoring 13 points (net 11 points).

Defense looked good overall, but that is also because Iowa has no real offense.

The key stat to me was no rushing yards by Paddock. I think Paddock played an ok game, but his lack of threat to run hurt in the end, especially with passing lanes getting closed off down the stretch. Some of the batted balls down in 4th quarter were telegraphed, especially the final 4th down play.

To be clear, the Illini did not lose because of Paddock, but I think we can really use Altmyer's legs going forward. I want to see how Altmyer performs in a must win game next week.

It really hurts to lose this game but the gnashing of teeth seems strange. This is literally what Iowa has done to everyone all season long. They play tight, low scoring games, that come down to wire. It's what they do and it's why they are so hard to beat unless you have a significant talent advantage.

Basically a more sensible version of what I wrote in my first post.
Yes. On the hurt scale, Wisconsin was a 9, this one’s about a 3. I can move on from this.

I'm quoting myself to follow up. Iowa won the B1G west averaging 18.4 PPG which was the LOWEST average of any team in the division! Absolutely insane.

Henry (unless he’s taking direction from Brett) doesn’t know how to close out a game on defense.

Sucks the safety ended up being a factor in this.

Wonder if playing Altmyer would’ve given us another run option.

Some big picture things I see compared to last year.

1. Our best games have been the last 5, the first 5 we were not prepared compared to opponents
2. Devito plays for NFL team, QB was more consistent last year.
3. RB, Chase is on NFL had historic good year. Led college football RBs in yards or very close
4. Defense, near top of college football
5. Depth seemed to better last year

That is the difference why we won 8 games last year and right now sitting at 5. Also lost extremely close games to Indiana and Michigan last year.

Maybe a not such a bad outcome. LA starts next week without as much controversy and guides UI to win and bowl game, but also retains his confidence while maturing into next 2 seasons. Has already learned/grown a lot. JP had his moment and rightfully so but it was coming to an end either way. Not like we were going to be playing in a much better bowl game. Only with the help of the gods were we going to win the West.

This has been Illinois Sports Saturday at the 1970 John household. Actually it’s weekend. So far:
Illinois MBB defeats Valparaiso
Notre Dame defeats Illinois WBB
Iowa defeats Illinois FB
Illinois VB sweeps Michigan
Illinois MBB vs Southern tomorrow

Good game. Would be more upset if not for the magic against Minny and IU. The fact we were able to throw the way we did against that defense when we really didn’t have a choice was encouraging. Gutsy effort by Reggie. I don’t think he had much more than 18 carries in him.

Just a play or 2 here or there. Paddock dives forward instead of spinning. There was a play late where there was a good ball to Casey but he just couldn’t quite squeeze it. A poor spot on an Isaiah catch. A little more oomph on Caleb’s FG.

Overall a good game and encouraging the way we are finishing the season, especially with all the injuries. I think this team deserves a bowl game on how they’ve improved this year. Let’s gut one out next weekend.

Third and fourth and 1 has been a struggle all year more often than not. That leads to drives ending with 0 or a FG and today that is how we lost. The defense played pretty well overall. Another game we should've won.
Had the same problem last year in November. Line play is just not good enough to convert those.

Need to cut down the penalties and need better all around decisions from the coaching staff.
Penalties generally weren't an issue today. The team played a pretty clean game. The holding on Iowa's game winning drive was actually a good play. Could have easily been a touchdown.

Can't really fault coaching decisions either. Team just didn't execute when needed.
