Look, Illinois can chew em up and spit em out with the best/worst of them. Whitman got out, made it, and wants nothing more than to come back. The same can't be said about some of his peers.

Maybe he's not as bright as we think he is, or maybe he knows exactly what he's walking into- a bizzaro world where our cold-weather school can barely stay afloat in basketball and football, even after investments in facility upgrades, but fields golf, tennis, and volleyball programs that can compete on a national scale. A school which yields some of the largest alumni populations in the world, but whose alumni involvement/donations are at an all-time low. A school that's been riddled with scandals and turmoil, in a State with no budget, yet whose academic standards are at an all-time high. Let's not even get into the fanbase this schools has...

We fired a football coach after after abuse allegations erupted over twitter, retained a women's basketball coach for no good reason with equally as egregious accusations, fired an AD months afterwards, created a search committee including a soccer coach that was named as a defendant on another lawsuit, signed a Nike deal with an interim AD weeks before a permanent one was hired, and finally hired an AD who (knowing nothing else about his background) only has a handful of years as a DIII AD under his belt, all while still not having a chancellor and provost in place.

None of this makes sense! But, Whitman was bread in it. Sculpted by it. And is exactly who we need to lead us out of it.

Just watched the presser. Count me in with the I like Babs club. She's a sharp woman and was beaming like a proud mother. I liked her body language. She's genuine and it shows. Take the interim tag off her and give her a two year contract!!!!

What if any effect on recruiting high school football players will Whitman having played pro ball have?

Josh coming up live in the studio with Dave Kaplan in 2 minutes. CSN Chicago

Got a chance to watch this, and although the CSN crew brought the heat from the get-go (Asked him about what he plans to do with Cubit right off the bat), he handled himself very well and did a great job getting his points across. I think by the end of the interview the crew was fairly impressed with what they had heard.

without having listened to one second of their show, as I never do anymore {but I did about 10-12 years ago}, that has been the crux of their criticism of us for awhile now. Throw in some new/old references to Ron Zook/Tim Beckman for good measure, and drudge up another old story from a disgruntled former donor, and you have it.

rinse , lather , repeat.

Hard to believe anyone would take Bernstein as an authority on much of anything. I'm amazed that people actually tune his program in.

I missed the show today, but yesterday Bernstein's sentiment was basically, "Whitman seems like a bright guy, but he probably just ruined his career by taking the Illinois job". He also conceded that the basketball program has potential to be on par with where Arizona's currently is, but the football program is perpetually hopeless.

Ah yes, nothing can change I guess. I love to spend a lot of time listening to fatalistic jackarses that tell me I can't do something and get it right.

If the Kentucky's and North Carolina's of the world can develop decent football programs, so can we. I have faith. Granted our conference is night and day tougher, but we can at least be respectable. Gotta have faith!

Our conference is "night and day tougher"? Kentucky plays in the SEC. North Carolina is in the ACC, which you could argue has been on par with the Big Ten lately. Just FSU and Clemson's recent success puts them close. To say that the Big Ten is that much better is crazy.

Yeah, was kind of fun seeing Teddy Purplestein have to ask Josh some questions. Liked the answers and also liked the sheepish grin Josh gave him.

Most of the time I listen to them it's because I forgot to change the dial after Spiegel's show ended. I wish people would just quit calling in and feeding into his a$$hat persona. He rarely has anything insightful to contribute anyway.

I'm shocked to see all of the support for Wilson in this thread. She's the same person who orchestrated the whole Cubit fiasco, and people want her for the permanent position? I believe that her heart's in the right place, but I can't believe she's anywhere near the best candidate for the position.

Live and learn I guess. Plus she's one of our own!

Nah, Bernstein said that according to "his contacts" Josh Whitman won't be prepared for how bad the AD job will be. There is much worse info to come and Josh hasn't discovered it yet.

Funny to me that some radio guy, that has probably never met Whitman, can pretend to know exactly what Whitman will or won't be prepared for. Just proves that these guys there to simply make outlandish statements to get a reaction.

This is actually the exact same thing as what some, or even most, of us have been saying here, it's just when Chicago media says it it becomes BIASED ATTACK PIECE.

Well you will have that when that same media publishes headlines and stories about UI being "put in its place"
