Usually a fan of the second chance, but this was the right move in this case. You lose a lot of respect all around, IMO, if you let him back on the team. Mind boggling how this happens in the first place, but even more so after you see your teammate in trouble for the same thing in the prior week.

Hopefully he moves on and learns from the incident.

“We have made the decision to dismiss Kendrick Nunn from the men’s basketball team, effective immediately," Illini athletic director Josh Whitman said in a statement. "We have not reached this decision easily; we care deeply about Kendrick and want him to be successful. But after extensive deliberation, we think it best for our program to reaffirm our core values of trust and respect, to send a strong message about what is acceptable behavior for our student-athletes at the University of Illinois, and to part ways with Kendrick. As it is on college campuses across the country, relationship violence is of significant concern at our University, and we expect Fighting Illini student-athletes to be leaders in promoting healthy, respectful, caring relationships. We wish Kendrick all the best as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.”

Right move, right tone. Whitman makes me more of a believer. Hope Kendrick lands on his feet and does well.

Really good statement by Whitman. I got a bit nervous about this one, but man he's done pretty much everything well so far.

I wanted KN to stay, but I completely respect JWs decision making process. Hope Nunn does well wherever he may land next.

The decision is not an easy one to cut him. If you cut him then you're losing one of your top players in a season that will dictate if your coach is staying or not. Like it or not, this is absolutely playing a factor in Whitman and Groce's thinking/actions.

Now, I hope the school does the RIGHT thing and makes a statement that there is zero tolerance for this. No more basketball, no more scholarship, see a counselor for anger management, and have a chance to finish your degree. I think that is more than fair to the guilty party. Remember, he isn't the victim here.

I disagree with this. As having seen a lot of D2 basketball over the years, where it is not uncommon for a player to get married or have a kid, that usually means a player has played his best college ball. Marriage and/or children are too time intensive along with studies for a guy to be a gym rat. he will have time for practice but not much more. Nunn's performance declined considerably after he had a kid if you recall.

With JCL and AJ at the 2, I don't see where Nunn is that critical going forward. JG and JW aren't going to keep him unless they think it is the right thing to do.

Also, yanking Nunn's scholarship means he might not be able to complete his degree at this university. Not sure how much loan money he could get for school and living expenses this year.

I am sure we will get a detailed explanation of the decision making process when this concludes, no matter the conclusion.

I did not read the entire thread, so maybe this information was already shared. Kendrick Nunn was initially charged with domestic battery, but pleaded / pled to simple battery. There is some confusion about the legal meaning of these terms. First, in Illinois, there are 2 kinds of battery -- domestic or not; (1) intentional contact that causes bodily injury, and (2) intentional contact of an insulting or provoking nature. The Assistant SA said Nunn was arrested for the latter kind, so we can safely conclude the victim did not suffer any significant bodily injuries.

Second, Domestic Battery applies when the victim is a family or household member as defined by the IL Domestic Violence Act. While fairly broad, the definition specifically excludes casual acquaintances or "ordinary fraternization between 2 individuals in business or social contexts." Here is a summary provided by the AG:
  • family members related by blood;
  • people who are married or used to be married;
  • people who share or used to share a home, apartment, or other common dwelling;
  • people who have or allegedly have child in common or a blood relationship through a child in common;
  • people who are dating or engaged or used to date, including same sex couples; and
  • people with disabilities and their personal assistants

Based on what I have read, it appears that the police applied a loose interpretation of "dating or engaged or used to date" in both the Tate and Nunn cases. There is also a tendency both in media and on fan boards to conflate 'domestic violence' with 'violence against women;' which reflects a paternalistic cis- / hetero-normative bias. Moreover, as some noted; a single isolated event of domestic battery is not really 'domestic violence' either, as that involves a pattern.

Finally, I offer no opinion on an appropriate punishment for Kendrick Nunn. I'll trust the AD and HC to make the right decision, since they likely have access to information I lack.

100% on Nunn, he put himself in that position. He had everything and did something stupid to lose it, the school should only offer him the chance to come back and finish his degree. Everything else is on him.

that was not a tough decision at all. if for a second, anyone with the board of trustees second guessed Josh Whitman, shame on them.

It's the right move. I hope Nunn can transfer and continue his career on the court and in the classroom.

The decision is the right one. Wish KNunn the best in whatever happens for him next. Down but never out in the game of life! Respect JG and JW decisions on this one. It's not easy to dismiss and all B1G caliber kid who happens to be your second best player. Thanks for the time/energy spent working in the O&B KNunn.

The table was set for JCL even if Nunn had stayed. They were our second and third best players. The table is now set for Aaron Jordan and DJ Williams to be a big part of the rotation.

This. Sad to see him go but it's the right decision. I hope that KN can turn his life around and push through this life challenge. Especially for his kid and his kid's mother.

I'm disappointed but not surprised. I might be in the minority here but I thought we benefited from KN's tenacity on the court. I just wished he would have handled himself better in the dispute and realized whatever money was owed to him wasn't worth his scholarship.

I think a very large majority of people here thought we would benefit from having him on the court. That wasn't the issue.
