Kendrick Nunn dismissed from program

A few years ago (pre Ray Rice), a player probably survives this sort of thing. But this was an easy call. And the right one.

It still baffles me that Nunn struck this woman within days of Tate's arrest. If he didn't learn from that (even though the Tate charges were ultimately dropped), that would have made me someone jittery about keeping him around. Not to mention his repeat arrests for driving on a suspended license. Not the worst thing there, but another case where he didn't seem to learn.

I mean could anyone really be that mad? It's not like we jumped the gun and dismissed him before the legal stuff played out. We waited, and only after he plead out did he get dismissed. Hard to realistically interpret that as an unfair treatment, not that it will stop people.

Right. On both Tate and Nunn, Robert Smith was quoted as pretty reasonably saying let the legal process play itself out. Well, we did that for both of them. I don't see how anyone in Chicago could be pissed. But then again, it's Chicago, so nothing would surprise me.

Of course you are correct, but IIRC there were folks in Chicago that blamed us for Richmond's difficulties, despite the obvious issues he had all along. And there's still the overall perception that C-U is not a friendly destination for Chicago athletes. That's tough to overcome, even though you're making the right decisions.

Rosenbloom has a 'no lose' situation:

1. UI keeps Nunn - He gets to trash for keeping a batterer
2. UI dismisses Nunn immediately - He gets to trash that UI made a knee-jerk decision lacking careful thought to what serves the athlete best
3. UI dismisses Nunn after careful consideration - He writes the article he wrote

I got as far as the phrase 'clown car' and realized that reading the entire article would likely destroy some of my valuable brain cells. I exited immediately.

Not to worry. You would have destroyed only as many brain cells as Rosenbloom has in his entire cranium.

No one would notice.

I feel bad for Rosenbloom. I can't imagine having that much experience and that much access for decades and decades and still having so little of interest to say.

This is a good observation.

100% absolutely the right call. Violence against women cannot be tolerated. Maybe not the right thread, but this helps this team overall. Believe me. His defense was severally lacking and the ball continually stuck when Ken had it. A good highlight reel player, but simply missed on the little things time and time again.

1978 called, they want their sportswriting tone back.

Dan Bernstein is what a successful troll looks like. Steve Rosenbloom is what an unsuccessful troll looks like.
If I had to guess, I would say I'm one of the few that gets on loyalty that enjoys Boers and Bernstein. I think they are overly critical of Illinois most of the time, but understand they also know what they are doing when they criticize UI. The phone lines light up. But even those two got on the air and flat out said, Illinois and JW and JG did the right thing. So when they say good job, and then Rosenbloom comes out with this hot take of trash, you know he is reaching.

Rosenbloom really got under my skin the first few times I encountered him. Then I realized he's basically a parody of a hack sportswriter. More or less the Kenny Bania of the old-media hot take crowd. Every column follows the same formula.

"Hey (gratuitous insult of person, organization, or fanbase). You're a bunch of clowns (or equivalent, although "clowns" seems to be the go-to).

Incredulous straw man question?!?

Short, declarative oversimplification. Short, declarative oversimplification. Short, declarative oversimplification.

Short, declarative oversimplification (offset in a stand-alone, one-sentence paragraph).

Why do they call it Ovaltine? The mug is round. The jar is round. They should call it Roundtine!

Short.

Declarative.

Oversimplification.

Smug reassertion of main oversimplification, emphasizing his infallibility and the stupidity of anyone that might hold a contrary opinion, in the most demeaning way possible.

And ... publish.

The sad part is, there might actually be a genuine point buried deep within all that hackneyed invective. One could validly argue that we missed a chance to make an even more powerful, perception-changing statement about the new direction of the athletic program by acting sooner and with more conviction. But I'm guessing an intelligent dialogue wasn't the objective of a column entitled "Dear Stupid."

Bravo. Now, every Division I athletic program in America has an example to follow. Now, every AD or coach of a student-athlete who enters a guilty plea related to a domestic-violence charge can use Illinois as a reference point when doling out punishment to a star player. Now, the big-time college sports world has its latest reminder that scholarships come with conditions, and should, especially relating to the treatment of women.

Look around college basketball lately and it becomes easy to see the need to reinforce that.

Fresno State suspended Karachi Edo, the third-leading scorer on its first team to make the NCAA tournament in 15 years, after he was arrested May 9 and charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly striking his girlfriend with an open hand. Coastal Carolina suspended indefinitely starting point guard Shivaughn Wiggins in March when he was charged with third-degree assault and battery after police say he slapped his girlfriend and pushed her to the ground. Minnesota placed center Reggie Lynch on indefinite suspension earlier this month after he was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

So many players lose their way. So many programs search for clues on the next step when that happens. Illinois just produced a big one for all of its peers.

Illinois exemplary in dismissing Kendrick Nunn in domestic-abuse case

Good for Whitman and (maybe) Groce ... Bad for Nunn.

Overall, a positive direction for Illinois Athletics.

Good things are coming, Illini fans!

I'd love to see the day when these types of decisions are commonplace and are enforced at programs when the stakes are high.

I'd love to see the day when these sorts of decisions don't have to be made in the first place! ;)

Man those two idiots got put in their place swiftly.
There's also a staunch minority on the Rivals board who didn't want Kendrick dismissed, for whatever that's worth.

Just joined that board a few months ago, man that board is really negative and combative. Combes is often the voice of reason :)
