He rebounded better when he could play the 4 rather than the 5. Which makes sense because 1) he is a 4 and 2) he wasn’t matched up against guys that were consistently bigger.

Not sure why it has to be explained that a 4 playing the 5 spot won’t rebound as well.

Ehh, he averaged like 6 last year and 5 this year. Either way, he isn't a good rebounder at the college level.....just decent. Good offensive player, though!

I wonder if Black's relationship with Brad will be a factor in his return or not??

One of many, but you already knew that. I am sure you posted this because you have some insight into their relationship.

Maybe you should share.

Do minutes per game matter?

Sure they do. If you have a stat showing that Black is a "rebounder," do share. From what I have seen, his production has never matched his hype as a "rebounder."

It is not like he is horrible; we haven't had many dudes that are really good rebounders. Even our really good players like Cook, Augie, Rev...off the top of my head, didn't average major rebounding numbers. Still good players.

James Augustine was a very good rebounder, averaged 9+ rebounds his senior year, 7.5 as sophomore/junior, and almost 6 as a freshman. These are very good rebounding numbers, not as good as Mike Davis but in a different league than Black.

For Leron's size, I think he's a pretty good rebounder. Let's not forget that Leron is very generously listed at 6'7". The area I think you could knock him on is his ability to snag offensive rebounds/putbacks, but I think it's a lack of quickness that hurts him there.

For fun, here are the top Illini rebounders by per game average, minimum 45 games (fightingillini.com):
1. 11.3 - Nick Weatherspoon (71 games) - 1970-73
2. 11.2 - Skip Thoren (74 games) - 1962-65
3. 11.0 - Dave Downey (72 games) - 1960-63
4. 10.3 - Don Freeman (72 games) - 1963-66
5. 9.7 - Dave Scholz (71 games) - 1966-69
6. 9.6 - Bill Burwell (73 games) - 1960-63
7. 8.7 - John Wessels (60 games) - 1958-61
8. 8.3 - Greg Jackson (71 games) - 1968-71
9. 8.3 - Nick Conner (71 games) - 1970-73
10. 7.5 - James Augustine (137 games) - 2002-06

I thought sports-reference.com might have something for individual players per team, but I couldn't find it.

But here's the rub: He is a decent rebounder for his size, which helps him compensate for his lack of quickness that requires him to guard larger guys. For me, he needs to rebound at a greater rate than someone listed at 6'7" because his limited athleticism necessitates him guarding someone more adept at rebounding. He's a great scorer and would love for him to come back but I'm guessing he's one of the worst rebounders in the B1G when you factor in his position and his playing time.

Good list, interesting that for an entire career Augustine is the best rebounder since 1973!

Looks like shooting was a lost art in the 60's. This also further verifies how awesome James Augustine was.

Augustine was probably our fifth best starter on the 2004-05 team. Holy crap. He would have been our best player by a margin this year.

That, or a lot more shots were put up.

2004/05 Illini had 2258 FGA. Augie averaged 7.6 RPG (295 total rebounds, 39 games). 1972/73 Illini had 1730 FGA. Spoon averaged 12.3 RPG (295 total Rebounds, 24 games). Average the same for the same number of games and Spoon would have had 480 rebounds for the season, and he was only 6'6", he was one heck of a rebounder in addition to a scorer, very underappreciated.

Both. Shooting percentages were not as good, and defenders weren't allowed to manhandle offenses the way they do now. Check out some Illini game scores in the 60's for total points scored by both teams.

If defenders were allowed to manhandle offenses now, we wouldn’t have had nearly the foul trouble this year.

He was the most difficult to replace and we probably would have won the championship if he didn't get in foul trouble. Wouldn't call him the fifth best but not sure how you evaluate.

Amazing that the 04/05 Illini only allowed 45 more opponent rebounds, in 15 more games, than the 72/73 Illini. Some comparisons.

17-18 Illinois: 61 shots/game
04-05 Illinois: 59 shots/game
72-73 Illinois: 72 shots/game

Same height as Spoon. Now there was a great rebounder.

72 shots per game!!!! That's why I grew up loving basketball. Virginia and Wisconsin fans must be closet soccer fans in disguise.

We would have won the C-Ship if we had not shot 40 3's.:chief:
