You don't need to talk in riddles or beat around the bush.

Just tell us the exact dollar amount you believe Leron Black will earn if he leaves to play professional basketball in the 2018-19 season.

A simple $ number will do.

Just tell me the exact numbers of powerball for tonight... a simple list of 5 number and powerball will do. :D

The salaries can vary widely depending on status. Only he top players in Euroleague can make millions per year, but all Euroleague players make good money. Black will not get a look from Euroleague teams. Zero chance.

The level below (high level Eurocup teams) includes some teams in top leagues (e.g., Russia, Spain) that may even pay $100K or more for top players. Unics Kazan is one such team, but there are very few. Domestic players (or players with EU passports) have an advantage since some domestic leagues have quotas on number of foreign players. Black will not be a candidate for this level either, players with NBA experience or significant international experience will be way above him.

Now below that, G-League has a very low average (about $22K-23K now IIRC, used to be even lower). Some team in better leagues (e.g., Russia, Spain) may make up to 2x-4x that but for players with experience, 2nd round picks, etc. Black is not a candidate for the high end now, but could be in another year.

Personally, I do not think Black has a legit chance for the NBA straight out of college even if he stays one more year. So he is realistically looking at the prospect of either improving his status and reaching a better deal in a better league next year, or starting very low this year and working his way up. IMO his best option is improving his status to a better starting point next year, but eventually he has to make his own decision.

If you were a contributor at a P5 conference there is a spot on a professional roster for you. Here is a quick list of former UI players on non-NBA professional basketball rosters for the current season.

2017-18 Season
Maverick Morgan - GTK Gliwice (Poland)
Malcom Hill - Telekom Baskets Bonn (Germany)
Jaylon Tate - Niagra River Lions (Canada)
Ahmad Starks - KW Titans (Canada)
Nnanna Egwu - Taipans (Australia)
Tracy Abrams - APOP Paphou (Cyprus)
DJ Richardson - Trikalla (Greece)
Demetri Mccamey - F Kontatto BO (Italy)
Mike Davis - Ankara DSI (Greece)
Dominique Keller - Olimpia (Uruguay)
Alex Legion - Dinamica MNV (Italy)
Trent Meacham - Boulazac (France)
Rodney Alexander - Elitzur K-A (Israel)
Brian Carlwell - Perry Lakes Hawks (Australia)
Jamar Smith - Unics (Russsia)
James Augustine - Unicaja (Spain)

Last season (2016-17) Cosby (UK), Thorne (Slovenia), Bertrand (Germany), Stan Simpson (Uruguay) were also on rosters.

Good Luck Leron.

Appreciate this list, BlindLoyalty. Did you compile it or find it elsewhere? Happy for all these guys, especially Abrams. Didn't realize he'd gone pro.

Given his family situation it is virtually impossible to fault Leonard for going pro early.

Leonard and Black are totally different situations. Leonard was projected as a lottery pick with a first round NBA 3-year contract guarantee, Black is nowhere near that level. Totally different decision and risk.

That's not guaranteed though. He could've torn his ACL and dropped to a 2nd round pick potentially and not been guaranteed anything. I don't see how any sane person would turn that down in Meyers spot. If you're guaranteed to go in the first round (which he was), you need to go. Look at Miles Bridges, he's likely to drop in the draft rankings from where he would've went last year.

He has made more money than Cody Zeller, the #4 pick in 2013, through 2016-2017... Zeller's contract this year and going forward is bigger.... Meyers' biggest problem has been injuries and the effect they have had on him.

Black, is not listed in any of the mock drafts I've looked at for this or next year what is worth. If NBA is the goal i think staying another year at Illinois could be his best option. Have a year like Diop of OSU and look what could happen. Go from off the boards to on. If he wants to make some money overseas might be the best option if he can get a decent contract. Unlike others I'm hoping he does what's best for Illinois bb and STAYS.

No doubt he can play somewhere and get paid, but question is what will he settle for. I am quite certain many of those listed above are not making much playing b-ball even if they are still playing. I think LeRon has a legit chance of playing in the NBA if he can develop a decent ability to put the ball on the deck and drive to the basket. I think staying in college gives him the best opportunity to develope that skill. Plus he get as much court time and be more the focus of the offense at U of I than any professional team he would sign with.
But, he is gonna do, what he is gonna do. Just hope as a fan it is one more year at U of I.

What he said.:thumb:

Someone on WDWS this morning said Blacks mother is pushing for him to finish his masters before he leaves. Couldn't hurt anyway. I still feel like he's probably gone.

Bridges was #10 on recent draft projection I saw, which us no drop from last year, maybe an slight rise.

Maybe 1% of US population have advanced degrees (wild @ssed guess). Value no doubt exceeds what you'd get from 1 year in Europe.

It's actually a little over 12 percent as of last year, so only off by a factor or twelve or so. ;)

Making an international roster is not a challenge, making money is. There are very few international teams at a high level that pay decent salaries, G-league does not either. From the long list above, only Augustine makes very good money (and has made good money for years in Euroleague) followed by Jamar who although plays for Unics Kazan (not in Euroleague), they have a good team that used to be in Euroleague and generally pays well.

Making money in basketball beyond college has become a difficult proposition, so it is extremely crucial the status you reach coming out of college. Unless you start at a decent level, it is a long and painful road. Black is not at that level, so improving his stock is important, his best option is coming back to college, Illinois or elsewhere.

I think this sums it up. LB is not an NBA prospect. Also not a top tier or even second tier Euroleague prospect. Too small to play/guard the 4, not quick/athletic enough to play/guard the 3.

If he wants to go play somewhere there will be a spot for him, and he will get paid okay $$ but nothing approaching 6 figures.

Will another yr at IL change that? Great question.

Let's not forget part of the allure of playing in Europe, is, playing in Europe. Not easy for an American to get a work permit there for most folks.

I'd take 30,000 and an apartment to play for the Antibes Sharks!

A lot of young couples would love a chance to work/live in Europe, enjoy the experience and culture if the financial end of it could be worked out.

$50k and an apartment/car would entice a lot of 20 somethings. Can you blame them?

I agree with you on the allure of living/working abroad and difficulty getting a work permit. But at the same time, this can be an inhibitor in Black's case as his fiance (assuming she goes with him) will most likely be restricted from work opportunities.

Is this true? I have a couple of cousins in the investment banking world that have lived and worked overseas in Europe and Asia (one cousin and family still living in Geneva). i 've never spoken with them about the process or any difficulties, but I think i would have heard about any major problems in that area.

Great idea! In fact, go ahead and start it and set it up similar to the scholarship grid, in a spreadsheet format. Posters will provide info on the player edits as they come along - thanks in advance.
