Grew up in Cissna Park. Went to Illinois State 1975-80 when they had Smithson (then went to Witchita State) and were ranked as high as #4 nationally at one time (knew those guys personally from dorm life - RIP Del Yarbrough). Saw ISU lose to ISU with Larry Bird in the NIT live. Saw Ron Jones on TV make 2 free throws if my memory serves me right to beat UI with a score in the 40's. But have always been an Illinois fan because of growing up watching the high school tournament(s) in the Assembly Hall - and of course WCIAin Mississippi for 25 years.

I also grew up in Cissna Park. Can't be that many of us out there! Been following the Illini since the Dave Downey days - got his autograph the year after he graduated IIRC - during my first visit to Assembly Hall 1963. Lived in Chicago area for 15 years after graduating and been in the Southern Indiana metro portion of Louisville for past 20 years. Stuck here dealing with all these UK, U of L and IU fans in this area. :( :chief:

Northern suburbs of Chicago, went to the same high school as Jalen Brunson and current standout Justin Smith, Stevenson. Too bad it was 10 years before those guys were there, or else I would've paid more attention to high school basketball.

Yeah, I could only do 20 options, and I really wanted to see how we were dispersed instate, for those who are instate. More options would have been fun!

Side topic, how big of an Illini fan base is there in your area? Obviously, Springfield/Peoria/Champaign/etc. are going to be solidly Illini country, and we all know Chicago is Illini plurality with lots of Notre Dame and other Big Ten fans, but I would be interested to hear guesses at the percentage breakdowns in other areas.

The 2005 team converted a bunch of Arizonians into Illini fans when they beat U of A to advance to the FF. Wasn't it great to watch the stupid look on Lute's face during and after that game? Priceless!!

ASU fans absolutely hate U of A, so I think many of the Sun Devil's still think kindly of us

We also have many snowbirds and Illinois ex patriots living here as well

All very true. I think at least 5 people on this board (including myself) have already chimed in from AZ. Lot's of Chicago/Midwest folks here, either to escape to retire and escape the winters or escape the high taxes and toxic economic/political climate. I do still miss Illinois, though. C-U is a great town and Chicago is a great city. At least they have Portillo's and Lou Malnati's here now, with Gino's and Giordano's coming soon. Now if we could only get a Jarling's and Papa Del's here, as well... :thumb:

Wow, me too (Cissna Park)--moved after the 7th grade to Champaign, then Bloomington, then back to CU for school, then Chicagoland, then ATL.

Edit--and FWIW, my father-in-law went to high school with Dave Downey.

So it's 153 in-state, 116 out-of-state so far. More out of state than I would have guessed. Probably something about this site keeping people in touch when they live far away :thumb:

Grew up in Wheaton. As a kid my next door neighbor was Steve Havard. Guy was a legend in my area. When he went to Illinois I was a fan. Went out to Iowa for school and played some ball and met my wife. Got stuck out here. Iowa City now.

I would guess there's a lot of truth to that. Illinois news is pretty hard to come by in Minnesota unless they're playing the gophers
