Sorry Bbuck, I should have clarified. It's just an open question to anyone that knows more about the program. Verdis was a highly rated recruit. I'm just curious if we should expect to see anything out him.

Sure, it's possible. Plenty of crossover with them based on high school pedigree and not living up to their potential early on. Unlike Avery, Verdis was also moved back-and-forth between offensive and defensive line. Someone like him (or Wilkins, or Edwards) will have to step up and become a difference maker if one or both of Newton/Randolph leave early.

I had heard on the radio that Walter's is taking 'a number' of GAs and staff with him. Bret commented that Walters could pay them better (which struck me as odd). Perhaps they will be placed in higher positions at Purdue?

I think that was meant as a joke.
Walters was supposedly only able to take one official assistant coach with him. there is likely no prohibition nor agreement regarding other people.
Other staff people are free to work where they want. I highly doubt it has anything to do with amount of pay

Walters made one of our GAs an AC (of DBs, I believe). I think that was what Bielema was joking about.
He took an analyst too and made them a AC.

Yah Bret really wasn't joking about it he was literally saying that Walters was probably going to get some of the GA's and quality control staff and make them actual full staff which means they could get paid more. I am not sure but the way Bret said it was that their may be a pay cap on GA's and QC positions imposed by the NCAA? Or was that the joking part?
Financially it makes sense for him to come back - Chase is looking like a 4th round pick which is ~$650K/year in the NFL, plus no guarantee to make the team. A RB only has so many years to maximize income, so it wouldn't be a bad decision to come back, bank a $1M or so. It likely doesn't change his draft stock much for 2024 and he can split carries more with McCray and lessen the wear and tear he takes

if Chase can get 1M NIL money by sticking around, he will really need to weigh that with what he would NET from an NFL non guaranteed contract.
He can take some of the NIL money , buy an insurance policy against a career ending injury, and still be way ahead at least for next year.
Pro agents take 15% off the top, the pro lifestyle costs a bunch, and he can live large in C-U for a year for way less than in a major city.

This is a very deep deep running back class. Some forecasters don't even have Chase in the top ten running backs if you can believe that. As crazy as that is, it's true. If he does decide to wait, he could very well improve his draft stock next year to say middle or end of 3rd round. My gut is that he goes though.

I'm no fan of Lovie, but the challenge of landing solid, difference making QB's is not a unique problem for the Illini nor is it a new one. With the exceptions of the established national powers, everyone is constantly on the hunt for those type of QBs - it's such a vitally important position and seemingly so hard to tell who's going to adjust to the speed and intensity of the college game.
