Luke Altmyer and Illinois haven’t had the marriage we expected. In my opinion, there needs to be a change at the quarterback position entering the 2024 season, though this is less about Altmyer leaving — he already transferred in from Ole Miss and would need to graduate to be eligible elsewhere — and more about the fact that Bret Bielema can't stand pat here.

Behind Altmyer, there’s senior John Paddock and second-year signal-caller Donovan Leary. There’s several different scenarios that could happen with Illinois quarterback room, but I'm calling for some major changes to the group in 2024.

Pretty difficult to find someone better than Altmyer at QB who wants to come to Illinois.

still pure crap

Continuity is a growing program's best friend. Lunney righted the ship and keeping his system will make it that much easier for the returning pieces to grow and improve. As far Henry, it wasn't what we hoped but he's Bielema's guy and will be given another season regardless. Hopefully the read and reacts start to happen a lot faster with all the experience the young guys received this year. Not sure how we fill the law firm sized hole in the middle, keeping Seth Coleman another year has to be a priority and maybe moving Jacas inside.

Some people are penciling next year’s 100 anniversary game against scUM as a loss. I think it is very winnable. Michigan graduates a ton of talent and despite the idea that you can simply plug in new talent - they won’t have the experience and perhaps the team chemistry to automatically maintain 2023 level of play. We almost beat all this talent in 2022. Very winnable game.

In addition to all the first team Big Ten selections they also had 3 second team.

Nice that we had the only player not from the big3 I guess. Very happy for IW and he completely deserved it. Boy I hate seeing that ugly M splattered all over the place.

For me these are the key stats for Bielena’s tenure so far.

20 out of 37 (54%) games were decided by one score.

By my count, we have only lost games by more than one score 8 times (22%) from 2021 to 2023. And only Virginia, Wisconsin (2021) and Penn St, Purdue (2023) were losses by more than two scores.

It’s pretty remarkable how quickly bielema transformed this program from one that fairly rountineky was humiliated by blowout losses (remember 63-0?) to a program that very consistently plays competitively no matter the opponent. It’s an achievement even if it was accomplished with Lovie’s recruits.

But, unfortunately, I think that gets somewhat lost as a consequence of so many heartbreaking losses late in 4th quarters, which has a disproportionately negative effect on people’s perceptions.

We just missed bowl eligibility by razor thin margins in 2021. We just missed winning the B1G west and playing in 14 games and likely a prestige bowl by razor thin margins in 2022. We just missed bowl eligibility again in 2023 by razor thin margins.

It’s just really hard as a fan to fully appreciate how much this program has improved by objective measurements when we’ve had to stomach so much disappointment and bitterness from all the near misses.
"Home Run" post......thank you.

I'm entirely onboard.

I hate hate hate this! In any given year you could have a first place team finish 2-3 games ahead of the second place team, yet that second place team gets to play the dominant first place team for the conference championship. I realize ultimately no different than having an inferior West team play a superior East team, but it feels wrong. Imagine if the 1983 Illini had to play Michigan again to win the conference it had already dominated.
This type of disparity is very unlikely to be the case given the number of teams that will be in the conference next year. Honestly, the new format presents the likely best matchup possible for the B1G Championship Game. I think many of us can agree that the current format has presented very unfavorable matchups, and the championship game has not been competitive in most years. This year's game has a 23 point spread! I think if the format were this year, virtually everybody would be on board with a rematch of The Game, even if they played 7 days ago.

Moving forward, I think it is very unlikely that The Game will take place two weeks in a row. The likelihood is that their matchup will likely determine who makes the championship game. I have not done enough research, but it will be very interesting to see how tiebreakers are awarded under the new format.

ridiculous how top heavy the conference is. 85% of the selections from 2 schools.

As for Michigan. It is not like they've got low rated 3 star guys waiting in the wings. It's another crop of top recruits who have been practicing for years ready to step in. They will likely snag top transfers as well.

The only thing that would make them take a significant step back, not saying there will be no step back, is if they lose Harbaugh and then get a flood of transfers out.

There should be an asterisk next to those Ms, especially those on defense. It's pretty easy to build stats when you know what play your opponent is running.

Tim Beckman made a good pay day as well but his press conferences were markedly different 🤪
Maybe knowledge was the wrong word to use. I suppose Lovie Smith knows the game too, but I never learned a thing listening to him. Bret has an ability and a willingness to share how he thinks the game through that is different in my opinion than many coaches.
