I guess I can be convinced; however, I don't recall a similar (sudden/late) change occurring over the past 44 years.

Sounds like Duke would also subject to change then too, in 2025/2026. And then Mizzou further down the road......
We've also never had the sweeping changes in conferences we've had in the last decade, either. I could easily see JW or BB looking at the schedule and deciding that they need to do everything possible to get three wins before the conference schedule starts so we can hope to sniff a bowl game. Otherwise we really will be stuck in college football purgatory for decades to come

Bigger picture -- and admittedly, it may take 5-10-15 years but I'm thinking Bowl Games in general are going to slowly become extinct. (1) the new 12-team playoff will now generate all the money and the viewing audiences, (2) more and more NFL draft-eligible players will be sitting out of the post season to protect their best interests, (3) more and more teams with 5-7 records will be invited to play in the lesser bowls, and (4) hundreds of players will be announcing that they're transferring to new teams via the portal thus further diluting the talent pool......just like Ohio State in last night's Cotton Bowl.

And as it's now proposed, the major bowl venues will already be able to host 7 of the 11 playoff games (with the first 4 games of course hosted at campus venues).

[PERSONALLY, I HAVEN'T WATCHED A BOWL GAME YET THIS WINTER. I DID, HOWEVER, GO TO TAMPA FOR LAST YEAR'S ILLINI BOWL GAME AND THE STANDS WERE JUST 1/2 FULL. I DO PLAN TO TUNE-IN MONDAY NIGHT, THOUGH!]

It's not the prestige that matters, but the extra practices you get for qualifying. You get to extend your training program by a month. That's good enough reason to want to still reach a lesser bowl, even if it's meh overall

If we need to replace Mizzou with a cupcake to “hope to sniff a bowl”, then BB won’t be here. That’s year 6 of the rebuild. You have to be good sometime or you don’t get to coach anymore. That’s how college football works.

Mizzou just had a damn good showing in the Cotton Bowl while we're at home.

We can compete with them, but it's not a sure thing that we'll win. I'm okay hedging our bets for a few seasons while we get everything where it should be.

Any coach who takes over will have 5 full recruiting cycles of their players by year 6. Everything is where it should be by year 6 or it’s unlikely to work. 4-5 years is about the max amount of time a coach should expect at any job, regardless of how big the rebuild is.

I believe Bret is building the foundation. We are competitive with our rivals including playing Michigan within a whisker of winning. We now need to start winning. My main concern is coaching to win.

What’s your expectations for the team the next 2 years? To me, years 4 and beyond are judgement years for rebuilds.

Looks like it was just a false rumor after all
Thank Whitman, I was getting tired of everyone acting like we should run scared from Kansas. If BB isn't ready to compete I am happy he came here and stabilized out program, but if your scared of Kansas who is a year behind us in their rebuild you should be gone.

I'm not saying we are CFP team but we should routinely be getting 6 wins at least every year. BB has all his guys, this should be the last year a step back because we lost talent is a valid excuse.

The source said Syracuse and Kansas had been communicating about filling the open spot but that KU recently broke off those efforts. The possibility of a game between Syracuse and Kansas was first reported by Bleacher Report’s Bryson Stricker, who said the matchup was expected.

Based on other challenging rebuilds, Bielema will not be successful long term unless he has 6+ wins the next few years. 7-8 wins is the average for most successful P5 rebuilds in years 4,5 and 6.
