Louisville Self-Imposes 2016 Postseason Ban

On the subject of the ACC looking the other way, let's not forget that last year, Sports Illustrated reported extensively on the joke of academic policies at North Carolina. A travesty on the term "student athlete." Yet there's been NO punishment of the program or Williams by anyone, AT ALL!

I'm more familiar with the football end of things, but the UNC basketball report was exactly what everyone suspected & feared. Look for example at Oklahoma State football in their conf: another death penalty candidate that continues to fly under the radar.

disclaimer, I have a kid that goes to UNC, but I still hate the school, probably more.

Does the conference really have resources & access to conduct an investigation?

In UNC case, it is as much an academic integrity issue as an athletic issue. The fraud classes had a disproportionate number of athletes and it certainly was a loophole being pushed by athletic advisers, but it wasn't limited to athletes. Not sure if that helps out with NCAA, but there was some thought that it might in these parts which drinks their Kool-Aid sky blue. All under the assumption that this is a systemic university problem rather than an athletic problem.

Give me a break!!!!

Coaches are well known control freaks down to the tape on their players ankles. There are assistant coaches, academic advisors, trainers, etc. all working with a max of 13 players. Usually only 3-5 are the star types who might get inducements to play for that school. When Caliperi was on the team plane and Derrick Rose's brother flew with the team( a clear NCAA violation of an extra benefit). Cal knew nothing about it. Must be one big plane to not know who is on it. I guess he was knocked out before boarding so he couldn't see who was aboard. When Duke takes players take players from a "quid pro quo" AAU coach in Baltimore nobody notices. This guy is now in prison which is representative of the type of guy Coach K will deal with. By the Way Gary Williams, the Maryland coach at the time, wouldn't touch that guy with a ten foot poll. Some say that is part of why he got fired.
I was going to start a blog-Coach Accountability- but was advised that I was opening a hornet's nest that would really sting me. Recently a well known sports writer in Boston wrote a piece where he states that of course college BB is dirty (paraphrasing) but nothing can be done about it. On and on it goes. Watch Hockey and lacrosse if you want sports that are less influenced by the money.

so i guess in a scenario where Pitino is fired in 2016 and JG follows in 2017, no one would want Pitino after a year off?

I actually had a non-Illini friend ask how I would feel about this scenario playing out as soon as next season and I immediately thought about the 180 this board would do. It happens here all the time with recruits.

Personally, albeit extremely far fetched, I'd welcome him in a heartbeat and I wouldn't look back.

I don't want Pitino under any condition...I have to believe there is a coach out there that is good & not at that level of scumbag. I would rather stay a little bit naive.

His name is Bill Self. But we're only talking about levels of scumbag there.

I may be naive on Bill, but the arrogance and hypocrisy of Pitino seems unmatched by very few, the sex in the restaurant followed by comments that it wouldn't hurt recruiting; then the most recent scandal & him feigning disgust and claiming ignorance just are a little too much for me. I'd put him up with Pearl in the group of elite scumbags. Plus I just have never liked the guy.

I have a very personal reason for my disdain for UL which is probably greater than that of most, but I have never understood the vitriol spewed here about Pitino. Because he cheated on his wife? Good Lord. That probably describes 90% of the coaches we make into arrogant multimillionares.

Coach Accountability

It is so simple-Head coach says to his entire staff if we get in trouble you are fired. AD says coach you are fired. Simple, straight-forward and will never happen. So the answer is easy-coach deniabilty would be gone and their millions in salary would be on the line.NCAA is a joke because the answer is right in front of their face but they never deal with it.

Sounds more like AD & school need to be accountable, NCAA doesn't and shouldn't fire coach.

It may describe a percentage of coaches, not conceding that number is 90% though & this doesn't change if that behavior is acceptable or unacceptable. My perception is solely based on his public persona, scandals, and how he has handled himself in interviews. I do have a problem with the cheating, I respect that he put himself out there on the blackmail side, but he followed that up with an arrogant and holier than thou attitude that showed he thought he was above the scandal (which in fairness he pulled off with little long term damage). Add into that the hypocrisy of the current allegations, his total shock in the allegations, the little of his press conferences I've paid attention to, & on top of the fact I've never liked him anyway and I don't ever want him as coach at Illinois. We have to do better if the situation gets there. If that is vitriol fine, I can live with that.

Pitino preaching change

"Louisville coach Rick Pitino said schools and coaches should be fined for violations, and players who had nothing to do with infractions should not be penalized."

"Even though they (coaches) didn't know about it, it doesn't matter, they should be fined 50 percent of their salaries because they were leading," Pitino said.

"You should kill the university pocketbook right away and take that money and put it in a scholarship fund for needy kids to go to college and athletes and so on. This is wrong. It's a bad system, but that does not mean we are not wrong in what we've done."

Sure, have the boosters pony up and pay the fine and around we go.

Local ESPN radio interviewed Louisville newspaper reporter yesterday. He was saying Louisville is a real mess right now. Apparently at the last BOT meeting some tried to give a vote of no confidence to president, to force the president to resign. He survived, but apparently it got a bit hostile with name calling & accusations. Apparently there are a bunch of other scandals floating around, including inappropriate use of funds that the president is dealing with. This guy wasn't ruling out Pitino being gone if the current president left or depending on the outcome of everything else the president is dealing with. He then acknowledged how important basketball is in the L'ville-Lexington area. My take is he expects Pitino to be back, but sounds a bit like Illinois with a lot of other factors in play further up the university.

The other not so surprising comment was that the real villians according to the L'Ville faithful are K. Powell & McGee, who apparently someone has taped over him in the the team picture on display.

So QS and the rest of the Snider family have had quite a few days to think about the self-imposed basketball ban by beloved Louisville and their decision last year to pull the plug on the Illini commitment. Wonder, just wonder, if this has been going through their minds at least one time recently, "Oh, if we had just stayed with Illinois, we would not be in this mess now!"

I realize that this would be a completely different squad with a PG of QS's caliber leading the way, but it's not like we'll be doing anything different than Louisville in the postseason. I don't think we've done nearly enough to make him second guess.

Source: Louisville recruits told NCAA about sex, stripper parties

http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_...gators-attended-stripper-parties-had-sex-them

A person familiar with the NCAA enforcement process told Outside the Lines that, based on the statements from the three players to the NCAA, the Louisville program might have violated NCAA rules on impermissible benefits to players and/or shown a lack of institutional control. "If you've got three [recruits], that's a slam dunk" to put together a case, the source said. "That's the enforcement staff's dream."
"It's a pathetic story," the source said. "McGee gave the players a stack of dollar bills ranging from $200 to $500. Everybody in the room got the money -- the recruits and the current members of the team. Not only that, but McGee himself had his own stack of dollar bills. If this guy's spending $2,000 to $3,000 on a recruiting weekend, where's this money coming from?"
"There's no question this stuff happened," the source said. "There's no question the people at the University of Louisville know this happened. Katina Powell is not an admirable person, but she told the truth."
Also has some video of McGee, who is now a driver for Uber.
