I still can't believe this, not sure how I can patiently wait for the full coaching staff to be announced now...

I know! It's excruciating to wait. Comment on your Hall Of Shame. I don't think that's fair to Paul Kowalczyk, he obviously wasn't given any leeway to do any more than what he did.

Tony Dungy, the former head coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs and Indianapolis Colts, is another who sees Smith making an easy transition back to college ball.

“This is outstanding for the University of Illinois,” Dungy said “If anyone asked me to identify someone from the NFL who would be great at coaching college football it would be Lovie Smith.

“He not only brings football expertise, but will help young men grow and have their best interest at heart. He is the type of coach I would want to send my sons to play for if they were playing college football. This is a sensational hire. He’s going to have moms and dads very excited to have their sons play for him.”

The north end zone is a monstrosity and must be destroyed.

For now Block I should be moved to the 50 yard line area like before, and the NEZ should be a discount student section to increase student attendance

Covered the BWW radio show, man those guys look tired. When they walked in, Lovie got a huge ovation from a nearly packed house. Walked around on his own saying hello and shaking hands. Did his radio spot and then shook more hands and posed for a lot of photo's before leaving. He compared today (all the media interviews) to being like the Super Bowl Media day.

I've already been refreshing multiple forums coaching staff threads for any little nugget I can find, and he hasn't even been the official coach for a day yet. Exciting time to be an Illinois fan.

Me, too. My wife is out of town so I just keep refreshing this forum.

I loved the amount of transparency JFW displayed when speaking of the whole hiring process. It was definitely calculated imo and is refreshing to see an administration who understands marketing and pr/media relations.

They must be gassed. I wonder how much sleep JFW has had in the last 4-5 days? And talking all day starting with the team followed by pressers and interviews. I'm tired just thinkin about it.

I thought today there was a very noticeable difference from how he looked at his introductory press conference. Good thing he's young.

Progress

The amount of progress that has been made from the Beckman hire to today's press conference is amazing. I know that it is early in Whitman's days at Illinois but the amount of buzz produced in these early day's says a lot about who we have as an AD. I hope that Groce turns the ship around but if he doesn't I don't really know who else I would want finding a coach than JW.

One tweet by Dungy was pretty funny. He said as a graduate of the university of Minnesota, he was not happy with this hire!

Josh Whitman can take the rest of the year off. Fine by me. He's done more in 5 days than either of his former office holders did in 10 years.

Can't wait to hear the season ticket and IFund donation numbers over the past few days.

I imagine there used to be much more orange and much less gray on this graphic just a few days ago!

I really need Mike Thomas to explain that Beckman hire. Every other coach in my lifetime starting with White had a discernible strength that I could point to and say I get the rationale.

White- Charismatic Offensive guru

Mackovic- Pro experience Offense guy

Tepper- Recruiter and monster Defense

Turner- Offense guy

Zook- Recruiter

Beckman- ??????? Coaching Interference penalty guy.

The turnaround of the Toledo program under Beckman was very impressive and Beckman was and remains well liked and respected by many great coaches for some reason.

He belonged on any list of interviews for a Big Ten job. But the interview itself, my word, how did it ever get beyond a face to face meeting? I guess we'll never know for sure.

He had the Toledo rebuild but the rest of his resume was sketchy. I guess maybe "program manager or builder" was his identity.

You are right though with the Interview. Thomas must have had the flu. I remember want Toledo fans saying he is a decent coach but will say and do some of the goofiest things
